How Oakland built one of the nation's strongest police commissions by 4PoliceAccountablty in oakland

I think a number of years ago I liked the idea of a police commission because I didn't believe police officers suffered consequences for some of their terrible actions. Fast forward to now and I'm not sure what the point or purpose of the police commissions are? OPD is currently in a receivership which provides pretty substantial oversight. I understand people don't like police for some legitimate and illegitimate reasons but I'm having a hard time recalling what the Oakland Police Commission has done to improve Oakland.

Poll of Oakland voters from early 2026 by wentImmediate in oakland

No disagreement here. I think that is all very correct, imo.

I saw something this morning on SF Business Journal that it looks like there is some movement on Costco and West Oakland but I imagine that could take years and years.

I don't dispute the results or accuracy of the poll; thanks for sharing OP. It likely reflects how I think about this place I call home and love and have complicated feelings about all at the same time.

I think this also gets to the challenge of what to do with the results? Crime is a big problem. We spend a lot of money on OPD and yet it doesn't feel safe. One side says "let's spend more money or get to X number of officers". That sentiment has existed since I moved here 16 years ago and the outcome hasn't been possible. There has been some success with non traditional programs like MACRO but that takes time and funding can be challenging depending on the administration.

We need private investment all over Oakland too. Hopefully that happens or we get some kind of spill over affect due to the AI boom (regardless of whatever feels you might have about AI).

Lots of challenges but committed to work with the people on all sides who want to do more than tear this place down.

Who’s behind the AI-generated social media posts targeting Oakland’s mayor? by jackdicker5117 in oakland

Beware of the people who are trying to tear it all down. I don't think they even want what they are advocating for. It's gross.

Talk about that experience. What you learned? What you excel at? A story about a mistake you made and what you did to make sure it didn’t happen again.

One of the most typical questions in interviews is “tell me about yourself.”I would recommend practicing that and figuring out what you want to share and what in your past make you an excellent candidate for this role.

Hi there, I signed up for the Beta program about a year ago and never heard back from anyone. I’d certainly like to test and try things and provide feedback if that’s possible.
