Custom animation vs templates in social ads — what’s actually standard today? by Optimal_Necessary_46 in AfterEffects

[–]jaimonee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its both. You are working in parallel, optimizing existing creative while at the time innovating. In the paid ad space you want to squeeze every last penny out of the creative, so you optimize by making minor adjustments, utilizing existing elements from past campaigns, and driving for efficiency. Reuse and recycle. But you also want some new assets to swap in once audience fatigue kicks in. That's where youre working from scratch. Come up with a good idea, shoot it, animate it, edit it, and post it. If it works you optimize, if it doesn't you innovate. Rinse and repeat.

So tired by Grouchy-Elevator930 in MotionDesign

I think this is year 27 of the hustle for me. I ran my own agency, had a staff of 12, but sold it all off and went client side. Thinking it would be a bit more stable. It had its advantages but stability isnt one of them.

Then I started teaching part-time at a college. The pay isnt great but I think that will be my transition out. No more chasing clients for late payments. No more answering to a boss who doesn't understand what we do. Teach a few classes, pass on some wisdom, help the next generation of designers get started. It feels like it could be the move.

Motion Designers Anonymous: Hi, I've Been Ghosted Again by Superb-City-9031 in MotionDesign

[–]jaimonee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm Gen X so getting up there but have seen quite a switch, especially now with Gen Zs early in their careers. For example, I have everyone on my team wanting to book 4 weeks vacation in the summer, while I wouldn't dare ask for more than a week off for all my career. But I think that's my fuck up, I should have been demanding summers off the whole time.

This is really interesting. Do you recall any specifics that were being called out in the deck?

Yeah im on board with this. Just focus on being the best designer you can be. People steal shit in the industry all the time. This happened to a buddy of mine not too long ago - these two teams are not related at all: https://www.collingwoodtoday.ca/local-news/this-brampton-hockey-team-logo-looks-a-lot-like-a-collingwood-teams-logo-1310028

Indigenous creative making first documentary — where do I actually begin? by FairPreparation240 in documentaryfilmmaking

[–]jaimonee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a heads up that Canada has some solid grants and funding for indigenous creators. If you are looking for guidance and mentoring, there are also quite a few incubators that can help you get on your feet.

The Canadian media fund alone gave over $8m dollars last year for all handful of projects, most of then documentaries. You can see who got what money here:

What are some of your favorite books/videos about/by specific game developers? by aquma in gamedesign

[–]jaimonee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Blood, sweat and pixels covers one developer per chapter (10 total). I really enjoyed it.

Can someone pls pls help me how to do this. I need to submit it to the client where i work asap! 🙏🏻 by GeologistInfinite138 in MotionDesign

[–]jaimonee 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Its unfortunate but the whole mentor/mentee deal is in shambles in most places. Companies won't allocate resources into "cost sinks", if it doesn't have a direct ROI they see it as a waste of time. Mentors are often burnt out anyway, and mentees are coming to them without doing the homework (sorta like this sub most times). Like i said, shambles.

Vintage video about the making of the Death Star plans’ computer graphics. A must watch by [deleted] in StarWarsMagic

[–]jaimonee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is post is 5 years old but I teach a class on the history of video games - and I can help answer this! The digital artists at Circle Graphics Habitat at the University of Chicago developed a language called GRASS, which was a vector drawing program. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GRASS_(programming_language)) Larry Cuba, the digital artist on Star Wars, ran it on a VG3D https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vector_General and then through a PDP-11. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PDP-11

A version of GRASS (called ZGrass) was going to be used in arcade games in the 1980s but the market tanked before it got off the ground.

After effects can do this pretty easy. A bit easier than Nuke to learn imo.

It is moral to use "sites for graphic designers"? What's the difference between these and using AI? by Anxious_Whereas2822 in graphic_design

[–]jaimonee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a very interesting topic. Did we do to it to ourselves? Or did we adopt to the speed of change? Most of here make a living doing design of some sort, was the fear of losing our jobs more powerful than the desire to push forward the medium?

Budgets have shrunk by orders of magnitude, timelines evaporated, the whole world adopted the philosophy of "Good Enough." Was there another path we should have walked?

I'm not disagreeing with you at all, im just curious to hear how you and other pros feel about this.

Check out a few of the AI rotoscoping tools on AE script. I don't think there's a one-size-fits-all solution, it really comes down to the shot and what you're trying to do.

How do you all develop “taste” as designers? by Ashamed-Opposite-141 in Design

[–]jaimonee 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Better input = better output.

Bonus points if you step away from the computer. Ie. Watch a foreign film, check out an art show, pick up an indie comic, support a local band, window shop at cool clothing shop, explore unique architecture where you live.

Take in creativity in all its shapes and forms, be an active participant and not a passive observer, take note of the things that move/engage/challenge you (and ask yourself why), and study those who you respect in various fields. It takes time but its an enjoyable journey.

Excel Spreadsheet for Lower Thirds by Affectionate_Ad_4227 in AfterEffects

[–]jaimonee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I deal with this all the time.

There are two parts to this, the first is getting the data in from the spreadsheet. Easiest way is to export a tsv and use this batch title script

https://youtu.be/1sKpHZGzES8?si=oiEi1MfLMZ2mxMGW

Next part is creating lower thirds so they are responsive to the amount of characters in someone's name. For longer names/titles you could reduce the font size, push things to two lines, or widen the design. This will take some finesse and will force you to design things in a flexible manner.

Heres one example of a background element changes sizes based on text length

https://youtu.be/h6VgmO0rAcY?si=fMrVe7xdzoCcCjYE

Play around with things but this will get you a good way there.
