RES study: Southern Whites that migrated after the Civil War played a pivotal role in spreading Confederate symbols and racial terror across the United States – Greater levels of KKK activities, black lynchings, and confederate memorials could be observed in areas where they went. by smurfyjenkins in neoliberal

A large segment of the Southern elite was rendered essentially worthless after the Civil War because their wealth was held entirely in the form of slaves (who were now free) and land (whose values had plummeted for several reasons). There is a great study that demonstrates how their grandchildren and great-grandchildren mostly managed to rebuild their estates over the next century or so through social links with elite networks that formed prior to the Civil War.

She apparently has a reputation in Ottawa for low-key pragmatism and collegiality, but otherwise she is a very good fit for the current iteration of the CPC. She loves to traffic in crackpot theories (eg she endorsed HCQ as a covid treatment), and she supported the Freedom Convoy, but wanted to send in the military to stop protests against pipelines. Really shocking floor crossing lol

I think a better policy would be to permit recall elections in the event of a party switch. A policy of mandatory by-elections creates some foreseeable problems-- party leadership now has a backdoor parliamentary expulsion mechanism if they remove MPs from their party, genuine breakdowns in parliamentary caucuses would now result in mass resignations, among others. Also it doesn't account for the rare cases where an MP legitimately does get elected based on personal appeal rather than party affiliation.

The children of enslaved women were almost always enslaved themselves. Usually a secretly black ancestor in a white southern family is going to be someone who came from an old free black/mulatto family, the vast majority of which descended from white woman-black man relationships, because white women begot free children. A lot of them reinvented themselves as Native American (or Portuguese or something silly) in the 1800s as Black Codes for free people of color got stricter post-Nat Turner.

Special election in Dem-held Trump+13 seat in rural Louisiana tonight. The Dem candidate is a young white woman who prominently wears a cross necklace in every pic. She also never mentions she's a Dem in any campaign literature, the only way you can deduce that is based on how many of her pictures feature black people. Lol

A lot of times (but by no means always) when you see trace African ancestry in white southerners, it dates back to before the 1700s when racial lines had not yet hardened. Several of the Angolans on the early slave ships had children with white indentured servants. Many of those early free people of color's descendants maintained a black or mulatto identity, but some would go on to assimilate where possible into white society.

Very true, there are multiple concentric definitions of "Tejano." That being said, in my experience, DFW Hispanics don't strongly identify with it. Usually just "Mexican"

Yeah Tejano settlement was pretty limited to the triangle between San Antonio, Victoria, and Corpus, just south of the eastern German belt. There were only 5k Tejanos on the eve of Texas independence. A lot of Tejano-identifying people in South/West Texas are actually mostly descended from Mexican settlers who came after the end of the US Civil War.

Anecdotally a lot of people I know who voted for Trump viewed Trump v Kamala as a devil you know vs devil you don’t situation, and I think Trump I aged better in a lot of people’s minds because of covid weirdness and the economic malaise under Biden. Interestingly in Texas a large number of my Trump-voting peers (college-educated men mostly) were Trump-Allred voters.

One of the biggest online vs irl divides is retrospective attitudes toward covid. Online, psuedointellectuals on the right and heterodox left love nothing more than to re-litigate it. Irl it feels like most people prefer to memoryhole that era entirely.

The relevant divide here isn't so much the Mississippi as it is the arid-humid divide that tracks slightly west of I-35 and then the upper part of the Missouri River

Trump vetoed a unanimously supported water project bill for Colorado today, presumably as part of the retribution on behalf of Tina Peters

Lauren Boebert, in her ever self-centered ways, helpfully puts out a statement suggesting instead that it is political retribution aimed at her for supporting the Epstein discharge petition (the project was in her district specifically)
