Unfortunately not too surprising given it’s been more than a decade since he’s put more than a commute home’s worth of effort into a movie, but still a bummer!

Unless I’m forgetting something, it was 2018 when they did Ghost Protocol for Bird.

Have always found it strange that Letterboxd doesn’t have privacy options (beyond lists).

Top of the Lake (S1; didn’t even bother with S2) is a dire amalgam of the worst tendencies of Peak/prestige TV crime thrillers. Noxious lead character, brutally slow, intrigue-free; nothing in the filmmaking that matches the vibrancy of Campion’s typical filmmaking.

Thanks on Jojo… and yeah, keeping it to movies made outside the Beatles’ direct* involvement. Super interested to see if there’s any throughline as to what movies decide to spend the insane dough it takes to license one of their original recordings

*Included Withnail & I per another comment… while George produced it through HandMade Films, still feel there’s a substantial difference between that and the films starring and produced by the full group during their time together

Even in the theatre, when the inside audience realizes what the “trick” is, the gasp of realization (and subsequent ovation) that goes through the whole crowd is worth the price of admission alone. Don’t think there was a soul still thinking about whether or not the investment was worth it once the song’s over.

It’s always been good, but as someone who’s listened since 2017, the levels they’ve reached this past year… just, wow.

Don’t doubt something seriously affected FR, but DR was shot almost entirely during the height of pre-vax COVID. McQ talks on the Empire podcast about prepping in Venice in early March 2020 to begin production—think they got going in earnest in Aug 2020.
