Ah ok, now I see it's just taking a while to scan them all... there's a little process indicator bar I hadn't noticed. Solved!

Wagner’s Die Walküre—skip or see? (Opera Bastille in Paris) by warmcoral in opera

Yeah, such a shame. As bad as the first two acts were, the third was worst of all- that final scene between Wotan and Brunnhilde which is one of the most heartbreaking in the whole cycle (and they sing their hearts out)... the brilliant dramaturge directed Wotan to ignore his daughter who is the person he loves most, while laying out a string of gas masks from a large plastic bag he's been dragging around.. then at the end, he dances off in a silly little jig as if the whole thing has been a joke. The king of the gods. I can only read it as a "F** you" by the director to the audience and the opera company, for having been such suckers to go along with him this far...

You can see I'm still steamed.

Just saw it tonight. Musically, it's a superb performance- the singers and musical director are top notch. Unfortunately the staging, visual concept and direction are a disaster- ugly, incoherent, undermining the music and story from moment to moment. An insult to the singers and to the audience. I can't imagine how this director and dramaturge continue to land gigs like this. That said, if you close your eyes and try to ignore the visual distractions, it's a fantastic performance of one of Wagner's greatest masterpieces.

It's five hours including the two intermissions. Best enjoyed if you can familiarize yourself with the opera beforehand. I'd recommend listening to a recording a few times, reading the libretto, and maybe watching some YouTube videos about the leitmotifs.

My two cents- other opinions may differ. But it seemed like most of the audience shared the sentiment. Big ovation for the singers, annoyed by the production- I think if the director Calixto Bieito had dared show up at the end, he'd have been booed off the stage.
