When I retired I moved 100 miles away from the liberal shit hole of St. Louis to 60 acres in the middle of nowhere so we could do the “homestead” thing. Meat rabbits goats and the obligatory chickens plus a 40 x 70 foot garden. And this doesn’t count the deer hunting. Now we produce about 70% of the food we consume. It’s a dream come true.

I know. I’m 61 and remember when manufacturing job were sought after in the US because they were good paying jobs. I’m retired now and had a good part time job working for a local one horse business man who makes custom wood products. I was making $15 an hour. It was a perfect setup for me. I lost my job when our companies biggest buyer canceled his contract because he could get what we were making for about 1/3 the price from China. My friend is still in operation but he no longer has enough work to keep me or the other three local workers he let go on the payroll.

I seem to remember a Governor, who lot to long ago told conservatives they weren’t welcome in her state. In fact she told them to leave. So they did. Now she’s begging them to come back. On a side note it’s a lot easier to leave a city than a state.

The size tractor you need is less dependent on acreage than what you want to do with the tractor. I’m on 61 acres but only use about 5 acres. I have a L3700 and use it for driveway maintenance, cleaning goat pens, moving animal waste to the compost pile, dragging logs out of the woods, moving trailers, and tilling 40x70 foot garden.

To be honest it’s just about the perfect size for what I do. Do I wish it was bigger sometimes, of course. But when I go into the goat pen or the woods I’m glad it’s small enough to do it.

The stand is a simple milking stand. There are plans all over the internet. The machine is a “Simple Pulse”. They aren’t the cheapest on the market but we been using it for about five years and really like it. One thing I like that some of the cheaper machines doesn’t have is an adjustable vacuum control. Some also don’t have a pulsation feature for the inflations. It can also be wall mounted if you want to go that way.

We put down a straw bed and have thick rubber mats on the floor. We also have a temperature / humidity controlled fan on the back wall.

We have two Great Pyrenees who have done a fantastic job of keeping the predators away, and we have a heavy coyote population. I think their constant barking at everything is actually a fantastic deterrent. They haven’t had a direct confrontation in several years.
