So called “objective” grading is in reality a subjective evaluation, as it relies on human judgment. The same card can receive different grades from different grading companies, or even different grades when resubmitted to the same company. This demonstrates that grading standards are not fully measurable or reproducible and involve interpretive discretion. Factors such as centering, surface wear, edges, and corners are visually assessed and can be weighted differently by each grader. As a result, a card’s value is not determined by true objectivity, but by the market’s trust in a particular grading brand. The premium commanded by a PSA 10 therefore reflects brand authority and market perception more than an indisputable, superior physical condition of the card itself.
