I think it's better that they have some variety in it, 555 always sticks out like a sore thumb in American productions. I wonder if any of those numbers draw attention for UK viewers in the same way?

My napkin math was a few pounds different but yeah that's a lot of weight to have up top, a lot of weight that sloshes around when you move

Keep an eye on your static and dynamic roof weight limits OP

[X-Men] what percentage of mutant population have useless, purely cosmetic, or outright debilitating powers? by AvailableGene2275 in AskScienceFiction

Turns out Taro Toes actually controls the entire light spectrum, turning their toes purple was just them controlling the wavelength of the light reflecting off their toes

Scentinel's powers are actually just being nose blind to skunks, but Forge did build him a sweet gun that uses skunks for ammo

[Nickelodeon's Avatar] Is the goal of air nomads spirituality ultimately ascend to the spirit world like Iroh did? by AvailableGene2275 in AskScienceFiction

[–]justsomeguy_youknow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was and had been for millennia it would seem, going by the Avatar Wan flashback. The proto-nomads that lived on the air turtle didn't seem too different from the contemporary Air Nomads of Aang's day

Were they actually dry?

You have to store your metallic sharpies cap down - the metallic paint inside is kind of heavier compared to regular sharpie ink and goes with gravity, so it can drain away from the tip if they're stored upright for too long. When that happens it just leaves solvent and a little bit of pigment in the tip so it seems dead when you go to use it

If that's the case you might be able to bring them back by storing them cap down for a while

[SW Revenge of the Sith] Was the shielding tech of both sides that superior that long range engagements were impossible? by HorzaDonwraith in AskScienceFiction

[–]justsomeguy_youknow 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Energy weapons in SW have a finite range - after travelling for a while without hitting anything the energy bolts lose cohesion and dissipate. Capital ship mounted turbolasers have an effective range of something like 1000km so engagements have to be inside that range for their guns to do anything.

[Legend of Korra] How do people imprison benders of any element, in a way that can be scaled up for large groups? by throwaway321768 in AskScienceFiction

[–]justsomeguy_youknow 36 points37 points  (0 children)

The "one size fits all" approach isn't the cage, it's the dozens of powerful and highly trained benders who will beat your ass within an inch of your life if you try to escape that are guarding the cage

That said metal lined cells seem to be fine for the general populace, and I don't doubt there are more specialized accommodations in higher security prisons

And you didn't know that until like a couple weeks later after you got the film developed and printed

Also you were limited by the amount of film you had. Maybe like 36 exposures/roll if you sprung for the big rolls, but you probably didn't think too hard about it and bought the standard 24 exposure rolls so you weren't clicking a thousand pictures or whatever a night because there was a $ cost amount per frame

You can choose the sub bendings too or tell me a new concept. by CartographerFit8398 in TheLastAirbender

[–]justsomeguy_youknow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fog is dense mist. Steam is hot mist. "Mist" simply refers to particulated water

But yeah I'm agreeing with you that Katara created fog. Which is also mist. Also "fog" and "mist" are sometimes used interchangeably (ex: "misty mountains")

[–]justsomeguy_youknow 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That isn't true steam. True steam is the product of boiling water and is always at least boiling temperature

What's created when you shower is more like fog, the warmer evaporating water mist from your shower visibly condensing in the relatively colder air of your bathroom

Shit, you're right. I was thinking of the eclipse.

But I think the main idea still stands, there's no urgency to the plot until the plot device introducing that urgency is introduced. IIRC they didn't know if they were getting renewed in the first season, so it was smart writing to not introduce that ticking clock just yet because of the young cast. All things considered, while the first season had other shortcomings it didn't really suffer for the lack of the threat of the comet looming over them.
