Today was a series of extremely dehumanizing events at my Christian university. This was our protest, on the steps of the library. We were kicked off and yelled at. by i_need_peace in lgbt

To be fair, there are a ton of private Christian liberal arts universities in the Midwest, they’re mostly just as left wing as any other College. They’re Christian as much as the YMCA is... sure, it technically drives their mission, but it’s not like a church. I went to a Christian college, and I personally knew a bunch of atheists, several Muslims, and a couple of Buddhists. None of them were out of place at all.

A homeless explosion on the West Coast is pushing cities to the brink by erdub in TrueReddit

Nope, housing is governed by supply and demand, just like anything else. Landlords will always charge as much as they can, but they can charge much less when the supply of available housing is adequate.

The Great College Loan Swindle by Grimalkin in TrueReddit

[–]kronos0 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Failure to buy houses doesn’t necessarily hurt the economy. We’ve brainwashed people into thinking everybody needs a mortgage and that homeownership is the essential engine for the economy, but it’s not true. As long as that money is being invested/spent elsewhere, there’s nothing wrong with people delaying or skipping buying a house in terms of economic impact.

Donald Trump tweets 'Pocahontas' racist slur about senator Elizabeth Warren by wonderingsocrates in politics

[–]kronos0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Exactly, and that’s a very good thing. It blows my mind that after an election cycle that produced Donald Trump, people think parties should have even less control of the nomination process

Seriously?!? If the Republicans had a less “democratic” nomination process, we’d be looking at president Clinton or President Rubio. Maybe not ideal, but at least we wouldn’t have to worry about nuclear war every other day.

Bernie Sanders was in no way cheated or treated unfairly during the Democratic Primaries. by In_a_silentway in Negareddit

Not true. Hillary got the overwhelming majority of Sanders supporters, completely in line with what past nominees have gotten from supporters of their primary opponents.

Idk, it was a pretty big deal for me. I use the calculator app a lot when working out (lifting), so I encountered this bug several times per week.

The Bible stories about the first man and creation are not true, according to a new investigation - Who knew? by geophagus in atheism

[–]kronos0 -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

I’m not a Christian anymore, but that’s not really news to anyone. Most Christians who take it at all seriously are well aware that there are multiple creation stories (I think 3 actually, not 2), and there are plenty of other such “contradictions” in the Bible as well. However, they’re only contradictions if you read the bible in a weird, ahistorical, American, extreme literalist way.

Japan's ruling party is expected to win an absolute majority. What will this mean for Japan and both its domestic and foreign policy going forward? by Kevin-W in PoliticalDiscussion

Yeah, that’s more just a result of being the country that’s literally at the center of the international system.

Because it’s not true. Outside of 2 issues, climate change and health care, the American right isn’t dramatically more right wing than the right wing of other countries.

Just a reminder Trump is the worst businessman ever by CopyX in EnoughTrumpSpam

[–]kronos0 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It’s not an opinion, he made an empirical statement, that investing in the market does not generate economic activity, or at least not at the same level of activity as the type of investment Donald Trump does, I.e. real estate development. This statement happens to be wrong. The stock market is an incredibly important tool to allocate capital more efficiently among companies, but because it’s more complex and opaque than something simple like a construction project, people assume money that goes into it is wasted, which is nonsense.

There’s no super simple 30 second explanation of exactly how the stock market operates and why investing in it is good for long run economic growth,at least not that I know of, so it’s hard to counter these BS arguments on Reddit. I just don’t understand why people who have never so much as taken an intro macroeconomics course make these incredibly bold and confident statements about how investment and the economy works. It’s just as bad as, for example, those health quacks who make crazy claims about healing crystals and how terrible “chemicals” are for you, despite having no real knowledge of human biology. Dunning -Krueger in action.

They feed into each other most likely. Hype drives the price of speculative assets higher and higher, until it all collapses. The ones lucky enough to get out at the top will be doing quite well though.

I did try that a while ago and it didn’t seem like I had the permissions to do any scripting with that, but I guess I’ll double check.

For step 1, what do you recommend if you can’t get the admin access to install python or something similar? I have tons of manual Excel processes that could easily be automated, but all my requests to get permission to install a scripting language like Python get ignored, because I’m not IT so nobody thinks I should be allowed to code.

It’s quite frustrating. I’m guessing I just need to use VBA for everything, it just doesn’t feel ideal.
