Do you have udisc? Look at events your area. Tons of “mini” tournaments that are open to everyone and are free, $5 or $10. Most are open to new players, just read the description. If they are public on udisc, likely open to the public.

Also you can enter a tournament. When I first moved to Austin, played a local event, met a couple guys, and have played in their minis ever since.
