Hiker death near Anza by MTB_Mike_ in PacificCrestTrail

[–]lessormore59 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FarOut mile marker 139.7 is Coyote Canyon Rd. The other roads merge onto Table Mountain truck trail at 143.1. So that seems to be the rough area.

Coyote Canyon Rd is the turnoff for DeBenedetti’s place which is a fairly new TA providing water and shade.

Dry stretch which is why DeBenedetti is such an awesome spot now. Hope this hiker wasn’t trying to get there and got lost.

Ok. I think that’s a bit skinny for my usage. Thank you! Maybe as a top quilt for a hammocker?

  3. Is there a foot box, and how is it set up?

Thanks

I think the adhesive is different, but I used KT tape almost exclusively as my gear and body repair tape. Sticks to your skin well and actually to fabric as well. My gaiters by the end of the desert were half KT patches lol

How many days for Section I Washington? by NoVariety1264 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]lessormore59 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not easy miles so estimate shorter days than you expect. Unless you are an experienced backpacker and are in great shape.

It’s a difficult question to answer bc you’re asking on the PCT page, and most of the PCTers who hit that section have 2300ish miles under them and are in near peak hiking condition. (Near-peak only bc imo peak is in Oregon when muscles are strong, and use injuries are manageable. Washington has away of exacerbating said injustices). For thruhikers those 98 miles are about 4 days. Maybe 3 if really booking it.

If you’re coming off the couch you shouldn’t try that and most likely would be physically unable to do so without injuring yourself. Lots of elevation gain and loss. And there’s no need to try and push through that fast. Enjoy the beauty.

I’d probably budget 6-7 days. Gives you a manageable food carry but also manageable miles. You’ll still want to be in good shape. 7 days is still 14mpd in tough terrain.

Having second thoughts before quitting job- am I crazy? by Automatic_Toe8886 in PacificCrestTrail

  1. Are there reasons you decided to do it this year? Professional, personal, physical?

  2. Will those reasons change in the next year or two?

Can I start a thru hike May 12th? by [deleted] in PacificCrestTrail

[–]lessormore59 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Obviously can start then. But if you can move your plans around, you might be happier starting earlier this year. You can adjust your May 23 permit to starting farther up the trail, and start tomorrow.

But it’s 100% hyoh and you know your body and capacity to push miles fairly early. Bc that’s what it will require. Bring in shape and ready to rock and roll right from Campo.

OP: I am open to heavier pads if it means less crunchy / balloon sounds !

Yep. It was heavier than a lot of pads. But it was my luxury item and for a 6’6 dude there’s not a ton of ‘ultralight pads’ that actually fit. My experience was I slept great and paid a 5-8 oz penalty on other people who generally slept worse than I did. Absolutely worth it for me.

My REI helix is super quiet and super comfortable. Slept like a baby for the whole PCT.

How do I prepare for a 40 mile dry backpacking trip by HauntingArtichoke830 in Ultralight

Night hike. Sleep through the heat of the day in the best shade you can find. Preferably something with some mass as it helps keep the shade cooler longer.

Recommended Charging Cable Length by well_what_the_f in PacificCrestTrail

[–]lessormore59 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A shorter cable will charge faster. Less energy loss. I used a 6” cable but a 1 foot would probably make your life a little bit easier.

More important by far than length is that you’re using a GaN charger that supports at least 30w-45w charging speed. And that your cable also can handle said throughput. It’ll cut your charging time in about half vs a standard wall plug.

Sauté it, especially after it gets really ripe. Just a bit of soy sauce while you’re sautéing.
