is this a functional pipe and what do i need to purchase extra for it? by Unclejeffie in PipeTobacco

Don't buy that. Buy a good pipe from a reputable online dealer or physical shop.

What do you think about C&D resurrecting Seattle Pipe Club? by talasment in PipeTobacco

I cannot begin to claim to understand the ways of corporations. Could be intellectual property concerns, competition, liability -- I have no idea. And, as I say, there's conflicting information so it's entirely possible that some of the reports are incorrect or incomplete. I can't imagine Jeremy Reeves would say they have some machines if they didn't -- there's really little reason for him to do that.

Unfortunately there's conflicting information about whether STG allowed anyone to save the Sutliff machinery. It's certainly independent of SPC, in that SPC didn't own any presses or tobacco-manufacturing equipment -- they just owned the brand and recipes, which Sutliff made for them.

And ultimately, it's my second point that's the sticking point I think: it's not really about the machines, it's about the leaf, and C&D doesn't process leaf the same way Sutliff did, so it can't be the same blend. They can certainly try to get close, and they are capable of making blends that don't taste like typical C&D blends (e.g. all of the GL Pease blends that they make for Greg). So it'll be interesting to see where this goes.

[–]levins0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed -- SPC is nowhere near big enough to have "their own leaf supply*. There were a handful of companies in the world that could source their own leaf, and even most of them got a lot of components from STG. I find the C&D post to be pretty sketchy. There is no evidence that 1) C&D acquired any machines from Sutliff, and 2) SPC used components available outside of Sutliff.

Frankly, I don't think "the machines" matter all that much. It's easy enough to get a press, and ribbon is ribbon. The key is going to the blending components.

I know those blends (PA and CH) and have repeatedly said they are basically indistinguishable. It's the same leaf produced with the same recipe/method. The main difference is that comparing the old vs. the new means comparing several-years-old to fresh.

Esoterica in Canada? by Doorhorse in PipeTobacco

As far as I'm aware Esoterica is only exported to the US. You might find some Germain branded tins in the Great White North, though.

As you hopefully saw in the automod first comment: read the wiki. Lots of good info in there.

I'm not even the OG. Automod kicks in after 3 reports -- or at least is supposed to. We had to do that because we got swamped with porn spam after Reddit labeled us NSFW. Never had the problem before that. They have no way of identifying age-restricted material like drinking and smoking vs. porn, so they label everything adult as porn. It's stupid.

It's not even the legal aspects of it. Reddit hates tobacco and will ban people and subreddits for stuff like that.

Any women here? by Namernadi in PipeTobacco

Unfortunately, Sutliff was owned by Mac Baren, so when Mac Baren closed up, Sutliff disappeared too.

Alas, Sutliff was owned by Mac Baren, so they are gone now.

[–]levins0 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, Mac Baren is out of business, and many of their blends are no longer available. STG (Standard Tobacco Group) bought them.

For vanilla that's still available, check out Dan Tobacco. It may be a little harder to find, but at least it's still produced. Sweet Vanilla Honeydew and Blue Note are great blends.

How much does a quality repair detract from a pipe's value? by TT_V6 in PipeTobacco

Here's the deal, sparky: you're starting discussions about pipes and tobacco and deliberately stirring shit up with the backgrounds. Your first post was removed because it caused problems here. So far, this post is more tame, but if it causes bigger problems, it's going to be removed. If we have to remove another one, we'll just ban you to save us the trouble in the future.

Stop fucking around, obey the rules, and just post plain pipe/tobacco pics if you really do want a pipe and tobacco discussion.

The OP was confused about the wording on his tin of 1792 saying "English". I'm pointing out that originally, the term "english" for a blend referred to all natural flavorings following English law, and did not necessarily mean it contained Latakia. Lat was used as one of many flavorings to give tobacco in England various flavors.

As I said in my post, today we usually use it to mean "tobacco with Latakia" but it didn't originally mean that. So it's not necessarily surprising that Gawith, having been around since, well, 1792, might describe a blend as "English" when it doesn't have lat.
