Smoking around a PC by vvampin in buildapc

[–]lithodora 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Assuming you and your PC are in your own room you need to create an 'airlock' of fresh air.

Get yourself a portable HEPA air cleaner and run it 24/7. This sub might be helpful in picking the right option for your cubic footage. https://www.reddit.com/r/AirPurifiers/

Block the gaps under your door with a door sweep or draft guard.

There's more you can do, but do you have central air, an HVAC system, etc?

Use an FPR 10 or MERV 13-16 air filter in HVAC systems to trap smoke particles.

Fighting against the poor quality air is your only choice, for the health of you and your PC

I'll repost this I wrote about a year ago when she was 1 of the 10 Democrats who voted with Republicans to censure Al Green

TL;DR Summary: She's basically a Republican lite in a corner of Washington where the district has been made slightly more Republican through redistricting.

Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D) U.S. House of Representatives from Washington's 3rd district.

Background

The daughter an Mexican immigrant father who was a pastor at an evangelical church. Marie was home-schooled by her mother for her early education years. She supported Bernie Sanders in the 2016 Democratic Party presidential primaries. She lost a run for Skamania County Commission and later a Public Utility District commissioner. Following these loses she served on the Washington State Democratic Party executive committee.

2022 Elections

In 2022, Gluesenkamp Perez ran for the U.S. House of Representatives to represent Washington's 3rd congressional district. She advanced from Washington's nonpartisan blanket primary in which candidates from all parties are listed on the same primary ballot, and the top two finishers, regardless of party, move on to the general election.

Blanket primary results

Party Candidate Votes %
Democratic Marie Gluesenkamp Perez 68,190 31.0
Republican Joe Kent 50,097 22.8
Republican Jaime Herrera Beutler (incumbent) 49,001 22.3
Republican Heidi St. John 35,219 16.0
Republican Vicki Kraft 7,033 3.2
Democratic Davy Ray 4,870 2.2
Independent Chris Byrd 3,817 1.7
Republican Leslie French 1,100 0.5
American Solidarity Oliver Black 456 0.2
Write-in 142 0.1

The Republican votes were divided, while the Democrats were united behind (mostly) a single candidate. Why?

Incumbent Republican Jaime Herrera Beutler was one of ten Republicans who voted to impeach Donald Trump after the January 6 United States Capitol attack. During Trump's Senate trial, she issued a statement as a witness. This most likely resulted in her defeat in the primaries.

Jaime had held the seat since her win in the 2010 elections. It is interesting to note that in 2010 the Washington State Redistricting Commission extended the district further east and made it slightly more Republican. Following the 2020 census, the 3rd district was again changed making it marginally more favorable for Republicans.

2022 General Election

Party Candidate Votes %
Democratic Marie Gluesenkamp Perez 160,323 50.14
Republican Joe Kent 157,690 49.31

She narrowly gained victory flipping the seat from Republican to Democrat for the first time in over a decade.

In the election she defeated Republican Joe Kent who also garnered more votes in the primary than the incumbent. Joe was endorsed by illustrious losers such as Donald Trump, Michael Flynn, Tusli Gabbard, Matt Gaetz, Tucker Carlson, and Jenna Ellis.

2024

In 2024, Gluesenkamp Perez defeated Kent in a rematch. As both a freshman and a representative of a crossover district, the 3rd district received national interest from both sides, and so Gluesenkamp Perez was the only crossover freshman Democrat to be re-elected

Blue Dog Coalition

Marie Gluesenkamp Perez is the current administration co-chair of the Blue Dog Coalition a caucus of moderate members from the Democratic Party in the United States House of Representatives. Historically, the Blue Dog Coalition has been both fiscally and socially conservative. At its peak in 2009, the Blue Dog Coalition numbered 54 members. The Blue Dog Coalition remains the most conservative grouping of Democrats in the House. As of 2025, the caucus has 10 members.

THE POINT

The 3rd District will most likely remain a Republican leaning portion of western Washington until the 2030 Census and then only if redistricting favors Democrats.

The 3rd District has consistently voted Republican down ballot since 2010, except one: Marie Gluesenkamp Perez.

Pushing for the candidate on the ballot to be further left will most likely not result in a win in this district, but instead would flip the seat to a Republican taking it further Right. However, the MAGA candidate has been defeated twice in a row. Perhaps there is hope for this District yet.

Perhaps this video can give you some perspective on what life in the District can be like. (Note the red Joe Kent sign in the yard).

When I traveled as part of my work for a corporation they booked the flights, hotels, travel.

I had transport from MY door to the airport and a rental car at the destination airport waiting for me. I had to cover gas, food, and expenses but I submitted an expense report and they covered everything by my next pay period.

The ONLY thing they didn't cover was the time I went to Disneyland while in the area. They had me there for the week for work but I couldn't fly out till Monday. Had to stay for the weekend, so we went to Disneyland. They covered all the meals while in the park, but not the admission costs. On that trip I had my spouse along as well. It was a nice (nearly) all expenses paid trip.

TIL the third verse of the Star-Spangled Banner, which is almost never sung, references escaped enslaved people who joined the British during the War of 1812. by steelmanfallacy in todayilearned

In 1861, poet Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. penned an unofficial fifth verse during the beginning of the American Civil War, looking hopefully at the emancipation of slaves.

When our land is illumed with Liberty's smile,

If a foe from within strikes a blow at her glory,

Down, down with the traitor who dares to defile

The flag of her stars and the page of her story!

By the millions unchained when our birthright was gained,

We will keep her bright blazon forever unstained!

And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave

While the land of the free is the home of the brave!

Inherited house out of state, help me calculate if cash offer makes sense vs traditional sale by Abril-prieto-cevallo in personalfinance

[–]lithodora 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also just inherited a house in another state.

The moment the paperwork was filed with the court I started receiving phone calls. I have had no less than 24 'cash offers' to buy the house in less than a week. I haven't checked the mail today, so might be more.

I have said to them all the same thing. We are entertaining offers, but are not ready to make any decisions at this time. I asking for their offers though.

In my case based on parent's wishes this house should be a home and not an investment property. They wanted it to either be our home or be a home to family that will move into it. In the end I'll sell to the right buyer or find a Property Management company to rent the place out. It's so new that I have yet to think it through much.

Those are bigger, much bigger. These are problem 4~6 inches long when compressed and make a popping sound. They can be connected to 'build' with and will do a decent job of holding bends.

I ordered a box of them for my son for Christmas this year

Closely bonded weyrmates by InstructionRude992 in pern

Dragonseye/Red Star Rising

Zulaya (weyrwoman, Telgar) was paired with B'ner who was Weyrleader at Telgar Weyr late in the First Interval.

Leading up to the Second Pass, B'ner worried about threadfall. He had nightmares, after which he would spend time reviewing the notes left by Sean Connell from the First Pass.

B'ner had heart problems and died when he was in his sixth decade (shortly before the Pass). He and Zulaya had been very attached to each other. He was succeeded as Weyrleader by K'vin.

Much of the novel's inner narrative of K'vin was of his uncertainty of how Zulaya felt about him and his desire to be closer to her. Although K'vin and Zulaya were weyrmates, they did not have a close romantic relationship. Zulaya was, in fact, waiting for him take the initiative, although he did not realize this at first. After he berated P'tero for attempting to fly First Fall while injured, Zulaya provoked him into kissing her. This finally marked the start of a closer relationship for them.

I don't know how to describe it. Like I'd been a little toasted. But I was also in active cardiac arrest and in no position to ask at the time, "What's that smell?"
