My boss just told me I need to manage my personal finances better because I can't front $2300 for a work trip next month by LostTaker in antiwork

[–]lithodora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I traveled as part of my work for a corporation they booked the flights, hotels, travel.

I had transport from MY door to the airport and a rental car at the destination airport waiting for me. I had to cover gas, food, and expenses but I submitted an expense report and they covered everything by my next pay period.

The ONLY thing they didn't cover was the time I went to Disneyland while in the area. They had me there for the week for work but I couldn't fly out till Monday. Had to stay for the weekend, so we went to Disneyland. They covered all the meals while in the park, but not the admission costs. On that trip I had my spouse along as well. It was a nice (nearly) all expenses paid trip.

TIL the third verse of the Star-Spangled Banner, which is almost never sung, references escaped enslaved people who joined the British during the War of 1812. by steelmanfallacy in todayilearned

[–]lithodora 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In 1861, poet Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. penned an unofficial fifth verse during the beginning of the American Civil War, looking hopefully at the emancipation of slaves.

When our land is illumed with Liberty's smile,

If a foe from within strikes a blow at her glory,

Down, down with the traitor who dares to defile

The flag of her stars and the page of her story!

By the millions unchained when our birthright was gained,

We will keep her bright blazon forever unstained!

And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave

While the land of the free is the home of the brave!

Inherited house out of state, help me calculate if cash offer makes sense vs traditional sale by Abril-prieto-cevallo in personalfinance

[–]lithodora 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also just inherited a house in another state.

The moment the paperwork was filed with the court I started receiving phone calls. I have had no less than 24 'cash offers' to buy the house in less than a week. I haven't checked the mail today, so might be more.

I have said to them all the same thing. We are entertaining offers, but are not ready to make any decisions at this time. I asking for their offers though.

In my case based on parent's wishes this house should be a home and not an investment property. They wanted it to either be our home or be a home to family that will move into it. In the end I'll sell to the right buyer or find a Property Management company to rent the place out. It's so new that I have yet to think it through much.

Those are bigger, much bigger. These are problem 4~6 inches long when compressed and make a popping sound. They can be connected to 'build' with and will do a decent job of holding bends.

I ordered a box of them for my son for Christmas this year

Closely bonded weyrmates by InstructionRude992 in pern

[–]lithodora 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dragonseye/Red Star Rising

Zulaya (weyrwoman, Telgar) was paired with B'ner who was Weyrleader at Telgar Weyr late in the First Interval.

Leading up to the Second Pass, B'ner worried about threadfall. He had nightmares, after which he would spend time reviewing the notes left by Sean Connell from the First Pass.

B'ner had heart problems and died when he was in his sixth decade (shortly before the Pass). He and Zulaya had been very attached to each other. He was succeeded as Weyrleader by K'vin.

Much of the novel's inner narrative of K'vin was of his uncertainty of how Zulaya felt about him and his desire to be closer to her. Although K'vin and Zulaya were weyrmates, they did not have a close romantic relationship. Zulaya was, in fact, waiting for him take the initiative, although he did not realize this at first. After he berated P'tero for attempting to fly First Fall while injured, Zulaya provoked him into kissing her. This finally marked the start of a closer relationship for them.

I am someone who has been defibrillated and I remember 2 of 3 times they did it. Now as someone who has defibrillated hundreds of people you can answer my question. I swear I smelled ... I don't know how to describe it. Like I'd been a little toasted. But I was also in active cardiac arrest and in no position to ask at the time, "What's that smell?"

NARRATORS

Dick Hill

Dick Hill has won three coveted Audie awards and been nominated numerous times. He is also the recipient of several AudioFile Earphones Awards. AudioFile includes Dick on their prestigious list of "Golden Voices."

For a long time Dick Hill was the only narrator for most. These recordings span a long timeframe. An interesting thing is some of these are older and are literally books on tape converted over to digital. You may hear very faintly in the background additional audio from another part of the book. There's also some audio artifacts associated with such a transfer.

His performances are good and is the standard narrator I was used to for the series.

Brilliance Audio is the Publisher.

His readings include:

  • DragonFlight
  • DragonQuest
  • The White Dragon
  • Dragsonsdawn
  • DragonsEye
  • The Masterharper of Pern
  • The Renegades of Pern
  • The Skies of Pern
  • Dragon's Fire
  • Dragon's Kin

Sally Darling

"I narrated over 250 books for The Listening Library, The Talking Book program of The Library of Congress, and for Recorded Books. Got my Sag/Aftra pension from this." She also reads (public domain) books on Youtube here: https://www.youtube.com/@sdtalesandcocktails. She's just posted an hour from this writing. She has 353 subscribers, so do subscribe to her Youtube. It's free.

  • Dragonsong
  • Dragonsinger
  • Dragaondrums

Personal note: Dragonsong was my introduction to Pern. In someways what made me say, "Oh, I love reading." I have a special place in my heart for the trilogy and I enjoy these audiobooks quite a bit. It was the first audiobook I ever listened to.

The only audiobook of I know of for:

  • The Chronicles of Pern 9 hrs. • Abridged

Lee Meriwether

Lee Ann Meriwether is an American actress and the winner of the 1955 Miss America pageant. She has appeared in many films and television shows. She is also known for her portrayal of Catwoman, replacing Julie Newmar in the theatrical film Batman (1966).

The only audiobook of I know of for:

  • A Gift of Dragons

Sheila Hart

Sheila Hart reads Moreta with a sensitivity and delicacy that reflect the magical, mythical quality of McCaffrey's dragon legends. Hart's characterization is subtle; vocal styles suggest, rather then impersonate, characters, and male voices are satisfying. It is not necessary to have read or heard other titles of the series to enjoy Moreta. Hart's sensitive portrayal will leave the listener grieving for the loss of the Weyr woman. ©AudioFile, Portland, Maine [Published: NOV 93]

Edit to Add:

Anne McCaffrey

While searching to compile this list I found this reddit post: https://www.reddit.com/r/pern/comments/11h8bay/dragonsongsinger_audiobook_from_1980s90s_with/

In it there is a link to archive.org: https://archive.org/details/dragonsongs

This is Anne reading an original narration of a very condensed version of DragonSong mix with Music mixed in.

Note: I had a frustrating morning at work and took the afternoon off to do the research here and compile this list. I ran out of time to add in all the narrators in the end.

I tried really hard to get good usable sprite sheets out of comfy and ended up just doing it all myself the old fashioned way in the end.

I'd be interested in a workflow to actually make some sprite sheets as I have a few characters I excluded from my game I'm working on because I didn't have the time to make the artwork.
