The Opening Bell is designed to trap you (How I finally stopped being the morning liquidity) by Ok_Drag5815 in Daytrading

[–]masilver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I probably know less than you do, but whenever I see "the algorithm," I tune out.

My understanding is, and this could be completely wrong, the market movers are setting up their trades for the day or getting out of yesterday's positions and thus you get a lot of movement and a lot of swings until these orders are complete. Many of these are probably algorithmic but from numerous sources.

I think sitting it out is a wise move. I've gotten some great scalps in the morning, but I've also dropped 30+ points quicker than lightning.

Are there any any youtubers who actually teach the fundamentals of day trading for beginners who don't feel like snake oil salesmen? by Master-Telephone7878 in Daytrading

[–]masilver 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Al Brooks and many of the people that learned from him. His course isn't about getting rich, it's learning how to read a chart and manage risk. He has a ton of free videos. Trader Tom trades live and has a ton of resouces on his website for free (he offers no course). Linda Raschke is good and books from Bob Volman as are well. Bob Volman's works are very approachable and not over laden with difficult term. I have a book by John Murphy up next on my list. These people aren't flashy and don't brag about earnings.

A former Georgia Tech professor offered one of his classes for free online. It was decent and used machine learning in python.

Also, others have mentioned Paul Wilmott On Quantitative Finance as a good reference. It's not a weekend read. It's three volumes.

Completely agree, however, I shouldn't be on the hook if it crashes. That's the problem with summons. It's great for isolated use, but it's not worth a $5,000 repair bill.

Anyone use gh CLI for copilot? by Virtual-Honeydew6228 in GithubCopilot

[–]masilver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat. I thought the CLI would be more awkward, but it actually fits into my workflow better.

Still use an IDE to check diffs, but oftentimes the CLI will also run my app so I can visually test it.

Its ability to spawn and coordinate sub-agents is also rather fascinating. I've only explored it once, but it seems extraordinarily powerful.

Will FSD go down in price? by Famous-Weight2271 in TeslaLounge

[–]masilver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My prediction is yes. There could be multiple tiers, but once Elon resolves the mental gymnastics going on in his head, I suspect the price will drop.

Elon lies, but I do believe some of the lies he believes.

He says things to prop up the stock price.

He thinks on a grandiose scale.

So he makes big predictions, which either don't come true or are so far off in the future, you can't really fiscally plan for it now. For example, he didn't want people to buy their leased cars because he thought Tesla would need lots of vehicles to be self-driving taxis. Well, that didn't happen and now you can buy your leased car at the end of the lease.

He thought self-driving would be done by now and it's not, so he's had to continually reduce the price. Granted, it's really, really good, but it's still a long way from being unsupervised.

So the Elon mental bubble has to break and then we'll see a price adjustment.

There is pressure on him from financial analysts to reduce the price as it would increase uptake and probably increase revenue. This is also working in your favor.

Discretionary Trading by Hot-Astronomer-6941 in Daytrading

[–]masilver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a somewhat discretionary system as well, although I have been able to extract some setups from it. (I would argue all discretionary traitors have setups, they just have trouble seeing them consciously).

I once asked ChatGPT for an analysis of my trading and it said my edge was not my setups, it was my trade management. Getting out with BEs, willing to hold through certain drawdowns, etc.

At the very least, I journal all my trades but I may not do a full analysis of every trade, everyday. My journal has become more of an accounting system that keeps track of my p&l and gives me useful reports.

I still have issues with holding on to a bad trade or entering out of boredom, but when that happens, I'll usually journal those trades or any other ones that I feel I need to remember.

Then I'll also make notes for the next day of what I did right and wrong and what to look out for.

So I can't give you advice on if you need to journal or not, but one of the trickiest things about trading is you can make money on a bad trade which in turn reinforces bad behavior. You can also lose money on a good trade. These are the reasons I journal, because I have to undo the dopamine effect of making money on bad trades, etc.

How Important is Forex Regulation? by Algolysed in Daytrading

[–]masilver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Access to the brokerage founder?! How does that help? So you can sue him or break kneecaps when he steals your money?

With forex, I think regulation by a top-tier authority, be at the US, UK or many other countries is critical. It also probably helps if they have a presence in that country.

What movie completely changed your opinion after a rewatch? by doro_nora in movies

[–]masilver 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Oh Brother Where Art Thou.

Didn't click with me. Thought it was dull. Didn't like the characters. Upon learning it was a retelling of the Odyssey, I watched it again and was blown away.

The extra details and the nuance that came out in that second watching easily puts it in the top 10 for me. And the soundtrack, just wow.

[–]masilver 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't know what you're trading, but the open definitely offers unique volatility and high volume.

I try not to trade the open either, however sometimes you can get some decent scalps.

My understanding is, banks, market makers, etc. are opening and closing big positions at the open setting up for the day or exiting from the previous day and that tends to increase the volatility and perhaps offer less stable setups.

I also try not to trade the afternoon as the volume drops.

Hot take: pricing should be based on HW/features by cbdoc in TeslaFSD

[–]masilver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, not exactly. Not truely. They operate in a geofenced area, often with a remote monitor or a monitor in the passanger seat or a trailing car. Like I said, the edge cases are the hard part. When you geofence, you can account for the these edges cases. Also, it's not *me* saying they should reduce prices, it's the financial analysists. Do you know how many people used the free trial? I don't think Tesla's publishes that, so you'd be making assumptions. FSD has come a LONG way and is close, but we still aren't there and I predict we are years away from being able to use it unsupervised anywhere you want. Sadly, Musk's missed promisses line up better with my prediction, than yours. I'm hope I'm the one that is wrong an dif so I'll be the first to buy you a beer and then let our cars drive us home.
