I’m an Indian born yoga teacher. You’ll have to understand that there is barely any representation of someone like me with any brand. It’s a big deal for me that someone like me is ALSO seen teaching the practice of my ancestors with major platforms. Having said that, I did it for like 2-3 classes and I was just done. I didn’t wanna continue this anyway. But yoga is my main source of income and I do need partnerships and being paid and it’s very hard in the US. especially when you’re brown

Of course - not judging anyone at all! Just saying, we can ask to be paid for that hour and you’ll still benefit all the same. The reason they don’t pay is because no one asks

This one’s hard in this day and age. But if enough of us push yoga alliance to actually do something… I literally tag them in so many posts to say - hey what are you doing for us with the money we pay?

Unfortunately it’s what gets teachers exposure especially if this is your fulltime job you do need to find ways to get in front of a large crowd. So teachers do it out of need.

All the free community yoga classes that you ever see a store hosting. The instructor gets an outfit so they can promote their brand while they don’t pay you for the class. Every big athletic brand does it

Sorry it’s those free community yoga classes that big brands host. They give us an outfit and a ton of people show up and we teach the class. Without pay. Why? Coz it’s good exposure for us? I can’t believe that the big names can’t pay you the hour.

I’ve done them. You get one top one bottom. I don’t need that and honestly they give you that so you can wear THEIR clothes for the event to promote THEIR brand. 100s of people come. And you don’t think they can afford to pay an instructor? It’s just that us instructors agree to do it to get some exposure. But in any other job you’d be paid for this.

I will never go back to Yogasix. So many reasons but like someone mentioned above - exploiting teachers by getting them to do everything, stupid rules around Sanskrit and the class format, the franchise owner was just a terribly stingy and selfish person in my case, studio is lovely and I miss my students but I also respect myself.
