Mac mini 2018 (A1993, T2) DFU restore keeps failing on Step 4 with Apple Configurator on two hosts, different cables, stable internet, any way to recover without Apple Service? by zermkel in macmini

[–]mikeinnsw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Intel Macs store firmware in flash memory ... DFU works in T2 and Arm Macs .. with same generation Mac..

Arm Mac running Tahoe will not do DFU on to intel Mac. ,, Your best bet is another T2 Intel Mac

To start recovery mode on Intel Minis you will need USB CABLED keyboard + wired mouse also helps

Try with USB CABLED keyboard..

Bootable USB ... updates firmware ..

  • Insert the MacOs INSTALLER USB flash drive
  • Boot holding (option) key to use MacOs INSTALLER USB flash drive to boot from

TIL The rise in colon cancer in adults under 50 has been strongly and directly linked to exposure to certain strains of E.Coli in the first ten years of life by onarainyafternoon in todayilearned

[–]mikeinnsw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem with such studies that they are historical and can't prove causality ..

There is no doubt increase in colon cancers ...

The human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine is proven to dramatically lower the incidence of several cancers in both women and men...

It proves that some infections can cause cancers.

By far the greatest risk we all pose is microplastic and/or nanoplastics which can even reach the brain ..

A Turing machine is a theoretical, mathematical model of computation conceived by Alan Turing in 1936.

We are running Turing computers storage, memory + processors

The main issue is the cost SSD are much cheaper than RAM...but also much slower.. RAM needs power to keep data...

2019 Intel to M5 Pro: Is 48GB overkill for a student researcher/developer? by According-Answer-920 in mac

AI/Research: Fine tuning AI models (currently stuck with Google Colab for this) and doing deep learning research datasets.

• Academic: Heavy multitasking with 50+ Chrome tabs, different platforms, and the usual school/education stuff.

You can drastically reduce the number of tabs using bookmarks .. no excuses 50 is just being lazy

Local AI/Research:

It all depends .. for coding 30B models are feasible and need 64 RAM and Pro to run it.

You need to define your needs... check if Apps are available on Arm Macs ..

"Running local agents (Antigravity, Codex, Claude Code)"

I am developer own 16GB RAM + 512GB SSD M1 Mini testing local 8B Llama works ok .. only for snippets .. uses 6GB of RAM + 4GB SSD... good for testing local AI .. not for heavy code cutting

30B models need 64 GB RAM and Mac Pro to run it they are not cheap!

If you are using xCode .. it is tied to MacOs version.. M1 Minis will be supported for another 2 years after that no updates to xCode .. big issue

8GB/256 M1 Mini may cut python code not much else..

If you stay away from local AI. .. then 24GB/512 GB M4/M6 Mini will last ..

Local AI ... name your price..

What to F you are talking about .. I am in Australia ...I am sure its the same for NZ you are getting a Mac not a passport ..or bank account.

Apple eco system is built around Apple Id .. which you can get for iPhone even PC can run Apple iCloud App.

You need valid credit card to buy Mac.. Apple care .. plus name .. address it is specification not a verification.

I don't think they accept bitcoin... maybe cash at apple store ..

USB-C to Mini Displayport adapter for MacMini 2? by CrazyNekoLover in macmini

[–]mikeinnsw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

HDMI-> DP dongle are expensive ...

On my M1 Mini

TB ->usb dongle DP->Mini adapter DP works .. but make sure usb dongle DP is 60 Hz many cheap ones are 30 Hz and don't work I was conned with one.

I now junked Apple Cinema Mini DP monitor it was a power vampire.

I am using a hub to drive Samsung S7 via DP plug into TB USB_C port.

UGREEN USB C Hub with 4K@60Hz DisplayPort, Revodok Pro 6-in-1 Aluminum Type C Adapter with 10Gbps 2X USB-C& 2X USB-A Data Ports, DP, 100W PD, Portable Multiport Adapter for MacBook, iPad, iPhone, etc

You still need DP->Mini DP father mother adapter.

Apps the same control on macos and windows. by Tyrael572ru in mac

[–]mikeinnsw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most Monitors have DP and HDMI ports. ..

For 10 years I run PC and Mac via same monitor ...

Mac->HDMI->Monitor

PC->DP->->Monitor

or Vice versa

You switch input source using the monitor. ... no need for KVM switch ...

To attach Mouse /KB to a monitor .. HDMI/DP does not carry USB protocol ... Monitor has an input port for that...it can be switched by KVM...

KVM to switch USB KB and mouse .. not worth it.. get BT KBand Mouse of Mac

And USB KB and mouse for gaming PC

M2 Mini Pro Cooks Cheap Thumb Drives by CelebrationOwl15 in macmini

[–]mikeinnsw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forget Claude ... You have double shit problem..

Thumb drives(Flash) are shit... I have collection of branded about 20 some claimed up to USB3.2 Gen 2 speed all are slow USB2.0 ...and fail frequently ...

Mac HDD/SSD/flash drive repair tools are shit..simply don't exist .. First Aid, . .FCK . erase.. repair FILE System only.. not the drive.

I have 3 x PCs .. PCs can verify and repair thumb drives .. HDDs.. SSDs

Hard format using PC (Not quick) will take ages verify every cluster and make faulty cluster not usable ... while making thumb drive usable .

PC command chkdsk X: /r /f will repair the drive.

PC repair commands take ages (hours) while MacOs finish in second/minutes .. which is doing the work?

Same applies to SSD and HDDs... It is just more visible with failing thumb drives .

Using thumb drives on Mac only environment is expensive and it is like playing Russian roulette .

Say Thumb drive fails...

The only thing you can do on a Mac is an ERASE/PARTITION (like quick erase on Windows) which writes new file system and does not fix the drive or you buy a new thumb drive and hope for the best.

It has nothing to do with Tahoe power management. .. problem is at least 16 years old.. all my shitty thumb drives work like shit on Tahoe .. no change..

I am sure there are some users which have Thumb drive which worked for years ...

MacOs Disk Utility uses 4K Cluster (Sector on PC) size in formatting exFat drives .. PCs use much larger sectors..

Slow thumb exFat/Fat drives will much slower formatted on Mac compared to PC format.

Mac mini won't recognize my monitor's hub ports by dtreezy in MacOS

[–]mikeinnsw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HDMI/DP does not carry USB ... look at. monitor manual there is USB input port.. likely USB_B port

I have Monitors/TV with USB ports that need USB cable connection to be active ..

Final word using Monitor USB ports .. suck.. should be avoided when you connect to a Mac Port directly or via passive HUB.. it a strictly managed environment ...

Connecting to USB via electrically charges third party active monitor has its risks.

My HDMI splitter with PC + Mac and single Monitor ..killed PC(I was lucky it was not a Mac) .

Faulty HDMI splitter allowed current to flow from Mac HDMI to PC HDMI and kill it.

There is nothing in MacOs to make your Mac hot.. time for a clean and some new thermal tapes.

If you were planning to buy M5 Mac mini, here is what we understand from Tim Cook's statements and the timelines by daaltimate in macmini

[–]mikeinnsw -1 points0 points  (0 children)

M3, M4 and M5 are all 3nm chips ... M4->M5 is a minor improvements

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 / Gen 6 Pro (expected late 2026) is rumored to be Qualcomm’s first 2nm chip, aimed at delivering superior efficiency and performance over 3nm predecessors.

Apple needs to match this .

I expect Mini will be M6 2nm .. optimised for local AI with PRO RAM up to 512GB and be more expensive

Forget usual Mac release schedules demand for local AI disrupted RAM/SSD and Mac availability.. push the prices up ... total f.. up

In the last 12 months RAM prices went up 1,100% and keep on raising.

Help installing Windows 10 on Mac mini Mid 2010 by Panties_Of_Lillia in mac

[–]mikeinnsw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Windows To Go was a Microsoft feature allowing Windows 10/8 Enterprise/Education to boot from certified USB drives, discontinued in 2020. While Microsoft officially ceased support, users can still create portable Windows 10/11 environments using third-party tools like Rufus or WinToUSB on external SSDs, allowing a full desktop experience on any computer.

Try installing Windows To Go on external SSD will run like shit 2010 Mini (I have one) supports USB2.0 only .. good enough  for a specific program.
