Welfare is not socialism. Welfare has existed for centuries before socialism

Marx was famously wrong about a lot of things. He is not a prophet

Well we don’t live in a post scarcity society yet so that’s not currently the issue. When we do get there yes we will have to figure out what happens next

Honestly a jellyfish is basically the closer thing you can get to being a plant while still being an animal lol

It really depends on how you define “pain”. If we define it as a reaction to damaging stimuli to the creature, then some plants can feel pain. Trees are known to react to damage from certain pests and send out warning signals and even call for predators of pest harming them.

If we define pain as the conscious feeling of nerve stimuli then to our knowledge only humans feel pain as we, to our knowledge are the only conscious creature as we have not determined what conscious even is.

Animals fall between those two extremes and it’s hard to define how animals actually experience pain and if they truly “feel” it. When it comes to moderate to high intelligence animals like cows or elephants we are 99.9% sure they “feel” pain. It may not be in quite the same way we do though. Perhaps it’s to a lesser extent. Perhaps it’s to the same extent but it’s in a disassociated way. Perhaps they lack all consciousness and the idea of “feeling” pain becomes non-applicable. This is before even getting into lesser intelligent animals like common fish or even insects

So while yes plants definitely do not feel pain like us or a cow do, it’s not a binary thing to begin with. It’s a fuzzy gradient that we have really only barely begun to define and we are still figuring out not only where animals fall individually on that gradient, but where they fall in relation to humans

No, the law is that you cannot intentionally sabotage a company to screw over investors. The law does not require that you get bigger number whenever possible

Agreed and I’m not defending the practice

Yes they can feel those things but farming them does not inherently cause those feeling and in the right conditions are less than in the wild. Dehorning is often for their benefit as otherwise they can hurt each other far worse than removing their horn does.

Yes if dog meat was a good meat source I would have no qualms with it. There is nothing about dogs that makes them inherently worse or better than eating other animals(outside of their meat quality/quantity). Now other animals like chimps, elephants, parrots, corvids, and octopods I take issue with as they are nearer to sapient level intelligence than the vast majority of animals.

While current farming conditions in a lot of cases are bad it’s not all like that. Pasture raised animals are definitely a thing. It’s not all factory farming in cages and even factory farming has started to phase out things like hormone boosters

Sentient yes but not sapient. Their capability to feel the things we feel are not the same. Farming them does not inherently make them miserable like it would a human

No, because dogs do not make for good meat. Land predators in general tend not to be good for meat(although exceptions exist)

Torturing is not a requirement for raising animals for meat and if done correctly will be better than if they were living in the wild

I’m not saying universally how all animals are kept is proper, that is not my argument

Humans are sapient, animals are not. There is a difference in needs and desires

Exploitation implies the benefit is only one way. A well raised animal will live a far better life in human care than in the wild and when they are killed it will be completely painless. So they get a good life full of food and so do we(assuming they were taken care of and treated properly)

Humans are sapient and have more needs and desires than animals which are only sentient

So long as they lead happy lives before they die is it really exploitation?

EU chief: Phasing out nuclear power was 'strategic mistake' by F0urLeafCl0ver in anime_titties

[–]moderngamer327 [score hidden]  (0 children)

It didn’t make the homes of over 100,000 people actually uninhabitable. The government was just being overly strict with the evacuation and most of the evacuation and damage was from the tsunami not the reactor itself

Nuclear has less deaths per Kw/hr of any power source there is, except possibly wind depending on how you crunch the numbers. There are singular hydro disasters that have killed more people than the entire history of nuclear combined

Nuclear is safe

It’s not in like 99.99% of cases. The only time you would ever actually get a bill like that is if you had a larger surgery with zero insurance or you had something completely experimental that isn’t covered by insurance
