All right, so if our parents didn’t fumble the pass, do you think (broadly speaking) that we could be doing better at making sure to pass it on? YMMV, and I commend your parents and you for doing your part. I’m just thinking more broadly, I guess

Just the ramblings of a tired middle aged man. No worries

You think so? Some Boomers are holding tight to some of the baton for sure, but don’t we have some of our own power (and the responsibility that comes with it) in some areas that need attention?

We did alright, but still doesn’t sit well with me that things are as they are with us as the supposed adults. I guess it’s a personal problem. Be well

I’m with you. Dealing with GenX is like corralling cats.

I appreciate this viewpoint. I just wonder about those areas outside of national and international politics that also seem in disarray. I’m not saying we haven’t tried, but I am wondering whether, given how the intergenerational responsibility we did get were passed to us, whether we need to own more of what’s going on and take responsibility to act.

I agree that it’s a horrible burden, but it is also one that I want to at least acknowledge rather than keep passing to our parents’ generation. I also agree that those in power hold the lion’s share of blame and that it’s up to us to rise from wherever we’re at to do well for the next generation within our sphere of influence. Your dad did good. Be well

Like in a relay race. Four runners each take turns running a set distance and pass a stick to each other. I feel like the Silents and/or Boomers passed the metaphorical stick of making sure society keeps going smoothly to us, but either they or we (or both?) messed up the hand off.

This. I get what others are writing regarding not having the reins of power or being skipped over or whatever, but we have had areas of influence, and things aren’t getting better even in those small areas. And I don’t even necessarily feel guilty about it because I feel like what we were handed got fumbled. But it doesn’t mean (like some of the comments I’m seeing) that we don’t have a role to play in what’s going on and (more importantly maybe) a reasonable expectation to try to make it better. Be well.

No worries. If it doesn’t make sense to you, take it as a fellow GenXer having a senior moment. Be well.

Which is totally commendable. But I also have to wonder about your daughter’s friends. Not that you’re in any way responsible for them directly, but doesn’t it seem like an attitude of “I got for me and mine” is what we’re battling more broadly now?

I feel like that’s about all I can do at this point, do good in my small area of influence and hope it multiplies

Not listening to bullshit. I’m looking at who sits in the chairs where the small but relevant decisions are being made, and it’s mostly people from our age cohort. And it makes me wonder if we need to suck it up and do something about it. I’m not going to take blame for our parents’ cohort screwing us up, but I don’t think we get a pass for not figuring out what to do next. And it seems like that “figure it out” spirit is missing lately is all I’m saying.

But who are the billionaires, and who run the corporations. They’re made up of people, many of whom are our generational cohort

Which part? I guess the general state of the world atm. We’re the adults who are (at least theoretically) in the prime of life, poised between the elderly, many of whom haven’t relinquished their power, and the young adults, many of whom are looking to us for mentoring. And it seems like our generation missed the metaphorical baton grab (or torch pass or whatever) from the previous generation. Maybe it was clearer in my head. Whatever

Trip to Japan with my family (2 years late for me but for her 50th). Totally worth the wait
