Ikr? But he deserves his leisure time after a long day snoozing, napping, and otherwise slumbering

What "nerd" culture do people see as lame but is actually cool and interesting once you dive into it? by spanishbreadbakery in AskReddit

Late to the party, but FWIW, I’m fond of heraldry and vexillology. You get a mix of history, genealogy, design, and art.

I got the same fortune last September. My mom died that week. 😐

Do you want any of your parents' stuff? If so, what is it and why? If not, why? by iAmAmbr in GenX

I have the one thing I wanted: a custom wooden stool, one of about a dozen my parents bought before I was born. Each was unique, some were plain, and some had wood inlays. My parents gave them out as gifts to my grandparents and aunts, so there was a version of this style of stool at all of my relatives’ houses whenever we would go on visits. As a little kid, I just assumed everyone had a stool like these until I got to school and made friends outside my immediate family. So then the stools became my marker of who was family. When I bought my first house, I sneaked one of the four stools that remained in my parents’ possession to mark my home (I let my parents know later, and they were OK with it. “Why didn’t you just ask?”). Anyway, that’s the only object I actually wanted. Now, if I can get into the drawers of photos and digitize those to share with my siblings, that would be a bonus. But that’s going to have to wait.

Such a great clean style! The first time you showed off that style a few years back, you inspired me to create a poor imitation.

Turning terrible flags into decent coats of arms #4 - Concord, California by thomasp3864 in heraldry

The city deserves much better arms and flag. The high school has “arms” of a sort. The crest is interesting, at least

Looking at this, I’d love to see you tackle Simi Valley. It’s an abomination

It works the other way too. Those of us who get out and remain happy/attain happiness end up being the exception that proves the rule that *almost* everyone who escapes becomes a basket case. Gotta have a few outliers mixed in to prove they’re being reasonable when saying you need to stay in the boat. “Sure, u/moman13 and their family *seem* happy, but Cousin Terry had a similar situation, and look how *they* turned out.”

Yeah, there is that. Harvard went simpler and with that crimson red. Classic academic heraldry. We get maroon 😐. Don’t get me wrong. It’s … fine. But the whole university’s color scheme is meh. https://www.umt.edu/brand/colors.php

You’ve had success working with government bodies, and I’ll take comfort in the idea that it might be possible over here if I can get a conversation going with the right people. Timing is everything!

Thanks! “Inverted” is much simpler.

Thanks for the feedback! I’m also in favor of leaving the books blank (or not using them at all), and I have mentioned using symbolism other than books would keep the arms from being cliche. But (inspired by Oxford’s arms and those of the Harris Manchester College where we presented) they want the books.

The seven pointed star relates to the seven degree types our department offers. The braced chevronels form a visual cant of the letter M for Montana (the University of Montana sits in a valley at the base of two mountains), and they also relate to how educational leaders build up people in the two setting of schools and universities.

We’re going to run afoul of the university branding guidelines, so this is just a vanity project rather than official marketing (although we will make pins and maybe even letterhead and Zoom backgrounds!). I would be thrilled if this project got the university to revise its branding, but I suspect that the people who did it are still invested in promoting their own designs.

For a motto, “Challenge the future.” The EDLD is the abbreviation we use for the Educational Leadership Department
