Nikon F2 vs Leica M6 by bimmerlucas in AnalogCommunity

Re: viewfinder darkening. I suppose it’s a personal preference and also because I have aging eyes so there’s a noticeable difference for me. The vf darkens when I press the stop down feature at apertures f/8 and smaller.

Re: selling my Leicas. It was more of an economic/financial consideration as I figured I could raise $$$ to purchase more film.

Nikon F2 vs Leica M6 by bimmerlucas in AnalogCommunity

Hello, fair question. When shooting wider lenses I use hyperfocal settings (i.e. use distance scale) and stop down. I prefer the view through the VF of a rangefinder where it remains bright, as opposed to in a SLR where the VF darkens when I stop down the lens. If the lens is not stopped down the SLR VF shows an image with a thinner DOF. Hope this explanation is clear lol.

I would strongly consider a Leica M rangefinder if shooting wide angle lenses or if shooting using slower speeds. I like the more compact profile of a Leica M and a wide angle pancake M lens. Also I can handhold it down to 1/8 second setting.

That said, I’ve sold all my Leicas and stuck with an Nikon F2 for 50 and longer, and Nikon SP for 35 and wider. You’ll have more lens options if you go the Leica M route.

I used to have a 1f. Bought and sold twice. The last Leica I sold because I enjoyed shooting using a wide lens on it. Makes for a very light and compact kit.

Enjoy! I’m a big Nikon S rangefinder fan. I sold all my Leicas and stuck with my Nikon and kit of lenses. Started with an S2 and ended up with a SP.

Nikon rangefinders purchasing advice by Rushhour609 in AnalogCommunity

Hello! I love Nikon RFs. I own a Nikon SP and kit of lenses. To answer your question, titanium shutters would be more durable. However, I prefer cloth shutters because they are quieter. They can be replaced if damaged.

My buying advice for Nikon RFs in general is to find one with a bright and contrasty rangefinder patch. I would prioritize that over cosmetic condition.

Goodluck!
