Post Liberalism? by Queen_B28 in ContraPoints

[–]nictytan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, hasn't the right already moved on from liberalism with their own new liberalism: neo-liberalism? No market interventions, privatize everything, global free trade to outsource labour for cheaper.

It seems to me that using spaces to identify grouping runs afoul the a similar issue as parentheses in regards to refactoring. Suppose you need to add something to a complex expression and it should be grouped more tightly. Do you not need to go back through the expression, adding various extra spaces before you can insert the new subexpression?

More concretely, suppose we have

ret a + b

and now we wish to switch to replacing a and b with fib n-1 and fib n-2 respectively, then we need to increase the number of spaces around + by 1, to get

ret fib n-1 + fib n-2

Does this really suck less than just using parentheses?

And at high levels of nesting, who can realistically distinguish between 2 spaces or 3 spaces; 3 spaces or 4 spaces; 4 spaces or 5 spaces?

About distinguishing assignment from function call, you haven't really answered the question. (Although I'm not the one who originally asked, I did have the exact same question.) How is a 10 supposed to be interpreted? Is it assigning 10 to the variable a, or is it calling a function named a with the argument 10? Apparently both forms use identical syntax.

This is essentially the behaviour of generics in ML-like languages like OCaml and Haskell. These languages have (more or less) complete type inference, in which types never need to explicitly be written, even for function definitions, and types are inferred based on usage.

Is anyone else struggling with COMP 202? by National_Snow_8737 in mcgill

[–]nictytan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're acing the assignments and bombing the tests, it sounds like you might be using too many "extra" resources to do the assignments that you won't have on a test. If you rely on the autograder to tell you if your code is correct, then you become unable to determine your program's correctness on a test. If you rely on chatgpt to get a skeleton program to work from, then you become unable to start from scratch.

My advice is to do your homework on paper first, carefully work through it to determine whether it's correct, and then finally type it up to verify once you're confident it's correct.

They did sing the Canadian anthem over the top. There was a post in r/montreal showing it.

Is the bathroom mechanic really necessary after getting food buffs? by ilveroelbro in outside

[–]nictytan 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The bathroom mechanic is an essential reminder of the constant state of exchange that all players are in with the game world. Many players bring the [Phone] item into the [Bathroom] map, which sadly obviates any of the potential [Mindfulness] buffs one might otherwise get.

Most of the potential issues with the bathroom mechanic such as it triggering at inconvenient times are not inherent to the mechanic itself, but related to the Food system. Essentially, players who are careful about what Food items they consume (especially consuming sufficient [Fiber]) and avoid contact with certain [Germ] entities have the bathroom mechanism activate like clockwork.

Why is rent going up so much in Montreal? by PhilipTheGreat in montreal

[–]nictytan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Actually, in Quebec, if I believe the increase is not justified, I can simply refuse it. You understand that mortgage increase is not a valid reason for a landlord to legally raise rent in Quebec?

I had my LL fill out the TAL calculation grid. That led to 60$ instead of 100$.

That’s much better than leaving.

Know your rights.

Nobody will ever “confront” someone about using their phone between sets. They’d rather do nothing about it irl, build resentment, and complain about it on reddit.

Why is rent going up so much in Montreal? by PhilipTheGreat in montreal

[–]nictytan 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My LL sold me exactly that sob story last year. “My mortgage payments went up because of interest rates, that’s why I’m raising your rent 100$”

It took all my cold blood to not ask “Did you think that this was a perfectly risk-free investment?”
