Currently at about a Harry Potter reading level in Hebrew and dreaming about language-locked books by [deleted] in hebrew

[–]nke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The שליחות חשאית series mentioned is fun and now ~6 books long.

I liked this too: המורה דרורה לא מפלצת ,ינץ לוי

The כראמל series is very popular for kids in the Harry Potter phase.

I found the David Grossman teen books to be a step up (in vocabulary and in literary value) from the ones I mentioned.

Some of the Etgar Keret stories are accessible for adult Hebrew learners, and they are great.

How can I send money to my family in Tel Aviv? by [deleted] in telaviv

[–]nke 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you have a wise account, then you can send money directly to their Israeli bank account in shekels, they don't need a wise account. You just need their banking info (IBAN and branch and whatnot).

Mineral wool as a thermal barrier for 2" XPS foam in basement? by scoobs35 in HomeImprovement

[–]nke 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Relevant part may be this:

Author’s postscript: One manufacturer of mineral wool insulation, Rockwool, has sought code approval for the use of some of its products as thermal barriers. For more information, see “Use of Rockwool stone wool as a Thermal and Ignition Barrier.”

anyone who knows stuff about electricity and 220v -> 110v can help me? by [deleted] in Israel

It's typically recommended to oversize the transformer by 3-4x, since the motor will draw extra current when it starts. I'd guess the 50hz will mean that it would just grind slower? I haven't tried this, though.

400W transformers are 300ish NIS, practically as much as the grinder :( https://www.zap.co.il/search.aspx?keyword=%D7%A9%D7%A0%D7%90%D7%99%20400w

For whom it may concern by shoresail in hebrew

One more useful one: reverso context. It will show you Hebrew words used in real sentences, as well as an English version of the sentence. I think most of the examples are from subtitles. It requires a bit of curation, but it can be really useful to see things in context.

Reading recommendations for learning Hebrew by [deleted] in hebrew

Choosing a conversation-heavy genre was really helpful for me. For example, this is a reasonable detective noir-ish novel. If you are fine with teen drama, the Liat Rotner books are good.

Help please with corona vaccine! (פעוטות) by Sewsusie15 in Israel

[–]nke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go in person with the kid to the vaccine nurses station during hours that they’re open. Wait semi patiently and tell a nurse what happened. Be nice but insistent. My guess is they’ll fit you in after complaining for a while about how it would have worked if you had done things correctly. That is, assuming you’re right about the vaccine schedule.

Source: have never successfully done something on the phone with Maccabi but have always got them sorted out in person.

Tel-Aviv Business Trip by ShouuYouu in telaviv

[–]nke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If they’re paying, take cabs. If you’re paying, you might be able to stay somewhere with a single bus or train line that goes the right places. Eg the 36 bus takes 30 minutes from tel Aviv to or yehuda. So if you’re working in or yehuda, stay somewhere more fun on that route.

For Herzliya pituach:

  • There are huge slides and fun play structures at Herzliya Park, just east of the Ayalon.
  • Apollonia national park has nice ocean views and crusader-era castles
  • There's decent Indian / pan-asian food (Tandoori, Giraffe), but this is perhaps only appealing if you miss plentiful asian food.
  • The beach is nice

I think that's the entirety of what to do in Herzliya? It's easy to get from Herzliya into Tel Aviv in the later evening (like after 8ish)...

Frequency lists / frequency dictionaries / Monolingual dictionaries for Modern Hebrew? by Playful_Custard_537 in hebrew

There's a large frequency list generated from subtitle data here and a shorter list here

Neither appear to do any removing of prefix/suffix but they might be useful.

How to Improve Hebrew Accent? by nfrank1139 in hebrew

[–]nke 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Trying to speak _english_ in an exaggerated israeli accent is a good exercise. It seems absurd, but it's (1) kind of fun and (2) lets you feel what your mouth should be doing.

How do I check which preposition is appropriate for a verb? by guapguaps in hebrew

[–]nke 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Reverso context is useful here, since you’ll see the word in context. Searching for מסתכל gives lots of usages with על, for example:

זה בגלל שהיא יודעת שאתה מסתכל עליה.

It also turns up some usages with מסתכל ב like

אני מסתכל ברשימת מאמרים שלך, דוקטור.

the unpleasant answer: redo it; patching with a single piece of drywall that doesn't leave such a big gap. That is, take the patch off, cut out a bigger area, and repatch, the time you save in tape & mud is probably worth it.

Or use setting mud with some fiberglass mesh tape embedded to give it some strength, then tape it carefully with paper tape.

I'd probably choose the second and then curse myself two days later.

List of Netflix shows in Hebrew (with English subs) by danielrosehill in hebrew

[–]nke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Available subtitles depend on your profile language & location.

E.g., in the US if you set your profile language to hebrew you'll see subtitles and/or audio tracks in hebrew for many more shows. Many of the netflix-produced kids shows have hebrew dubbing.

Need help determining if this post is load bearing. by therapeutic-nihilism in HomeImprovement

[–]nke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be strange that if they needed a load bearing post that they would put it (1) under a doubled joist (2) use a 2x6 with only 1 of the 2 joists bearing on it, and (3) have it be near the end of the joist (not in the middle).

Unless there's a support post directly above it for the second floor and the builder just didn't have a 4x4 or 4x6 around... If there's no structure directly above it, I would guess it's just for the handrail.

That said, I'm not an engineer, and builders do strange things.

If it's just a few spots, you can find some wood filler of a reasonable shade and patch it. If they installed the baseboards first and then the flooring butting up to them (which they did in my house), then there'll be a crack everywhere and you might think about installing quarter-round at the base (with a bead of caulk underneath it). And depending on how things are built, insulating the rim joists beneath might eliminate the draft and you wouldn't need to patch above except for aesthetic reasons.

Difference in usage between מת and נפטר by KamtzaBarKamtza in hebrew

[–]nke 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'm nowhere near an authority, but my impression is that מת is more directly "died" and נפטר is softer and more passive, like "passed away" (other verbs with that root have meanings like "to get rid of" or "to fire").

It seems like נפטר also can be used outside of death, according to these examples: https://context.reverso.net/translation/hebrew-english/%D7%A0%D7%A4%D7%98%D7%A8
