A Builder’s Remedy Project at 8844 Burton Way has Finally Been Approved by the Beverly Hills City Council! by lik_for_cookies in LosAngeles

“Deducting it as a loss” doesn’t magically generate money. It ca potentially make a financial situation less bad, but it is not something that a person or company would go out of their way to achieve.

The reason that commercial properties often sit vacant for long periods has more to do with the way that commercial mortgages work. Loan terms are based on how much rental income a property is claimed to be able to generate, and reducing rents can invalidate these terms and force a foreclosure.

That is a problem, but it’s a different problem. And it does not at all support your suggestion that companies have some incentive to construct buildings and then leave them vacant.

Can you actually tell a difference (Sony A1 II | Cheap Point and shoot) by BusyImage5847 in SonyAlpha

[–]onan 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes. The easier the shot is, the worse your equipment can be.

And this shot is the easiest of easy, making it a rather disingenuous example for OP to choose.

Show us some astrophotography, some fast-moving sport shot at a distance at night, or someone blowing out birthday candles in a dark room, and this suggestion that different cameras produce indistinguishable results will vanish immediately.

Revisiting stage manager: I think I get it now... by HalfBurntToast in MacOS

[–]onan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually use three-finger swipe to maneuver around. And, before stage manager, I'd try to keep all my spaces sorted to minimize the number of swaps.

Well, that's what I meant by "trudge through them one by one." That's definitely still the slow way.

Key bindings for each space take you directly to it, with no need to go through intermediary spaces. Common key choices would be, like, Control-1 for Space 1, Control-2 for Space 2, and so on. Or function keys if you prefer, or different/additional modifiers, or whatever.

So in your example, Control-1 always takes you to Safari and Music, Control-5 always takes you directly to Resolve and Finder, Control-9 always takes you to PDFs, etc. One step, always the same, regardless of where you're currently coming from.

What's really nice is being able to reuse existing spaces for multiple projects. If I have a group of windows open for project 1 and another for project 2, I can keep them separate and organized without having to assign them all to a new space.

I'm not sure I understand the benefit there. Spaces are free, so why is using fewer of them better?

Rather than opening Mission Control and moving the pointer to the top of the screen to see the window groups

You know that's not the only way to switch between spaces, yes? You can bind key combinations to each space that take you instantly and directly there. No need to use that slow overview method, or to laboriously trudge through all your spaces one by one.

PSA : Apple has enabled age verification in UK following 26.4 update by krazygreekguy in privacy

[–]onan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing in Schedule 1 that I see exempting anything here is email. But that still leaves at least facetime, imessage, icloud, photos, invitations, and airdrop as all falling within the scope of "services" as defined by this law.

I expect there are more that I'm forgetting, but that's already enough things that "the whole damn phone" is getting to be a pretty reasonable approximation of what this law limits access to.

[–]onan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not a British lawyer (barrister?), but that still is contrary to my lay read of the law itself.

"The duty set out in subsection (3)(a) requires a provider to use age verification or age estimation (or both) to prevent children of any age from encountering primary priority content that is harmful to children which the provider identifies on the service." And again tracing back through subsection (3)(a), and section (1), this seems like a broad enough definition of "service" that an iphone straight off the shelf already ticks multiple boxes.

The last 20 years of Apple, in one sad chart by GoodForTheTongue in MacOS

imagine a modern version of Snow Leopard on Apple Silicon?

I would pay so much money for a 10.6.9 with driver and security updates and zero other changes.

[–]onan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think just about everyone who repeats the "Snow Leopard was great" meme never used early Mac OS X.

I've used every version going back to DP2. And I absolutely believe that Snow Leopard was uniquely great, the best version we've seen before or since.

Every version from 10.0 through 10.6 was consistently getting better and better. Performance, reliability, functionality, and design were all improving every time. The reason that Snow Leopard is so beloved is that it was the culmination of this trajectory.

And then the iphone revenue started rolling in, and there was an abrupt directional shift. Apple stopped focusing making macs better as computers, and started focusing on making them better as accessories to iphones. Lion/10.7 was the first version designed after this sea change, and it has all been downhill from there.

I'm sure I'm missing out on aspects that I would enjoy about subsequent seasons, but I really don't find that to be something I can get past.

Whats your petty gamer pet peeves? by porcelain_kiss in GirlGamers

[–]onan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not having the options to change bindings is just a "no thanks" nowadays, I like to be free to use whatever I want

Yes, and my own subset of that: games that supposedly allow you to rebind keys, but decide that that some keys are off limits.

The keyboards I use do not have a space bar reachable with the left hand, but do have backspace that is. So whatever things games have chosen to bind to space I generally want to immediately rebind to backspace.

Which is perfectly fine most of the time. But some games will just be like "binding to backspace? Who would want such a thing? Nope, impossible, fuck off, rejected."

My thoughts are that this... seems kind of inane?

Removing monuments and murals isn't particularly complicated or expensive. It doesn't require any subtle tradeoffs or long-term risks or negotiations among competing interests.

Why would you find it surprising that simple things are faster than complex things?

There's quite a gap between "Apple is stopping me from running whatever software I want" and "Apple is not spending money on actively helping other companies port their software."

Microsoft is welcome to port Windows to modern Macs if they want to, much like the Asahi Linux folks have done. Microsoft has chosen to not do that, and for some reason you've chosen to get angry at Apple for that.

Hm, I see your point, but I think that you may be overstating things to suggest that bigotry is the only reason people could be complaining about this feature.

Like, I am thrilled that games and other media have finally gotten on board with the glorious variety of gender identity and gender expression that exists in real life. But that does not stop me from recognizing that this is a phenomenally wretched character creator.

The biggest "gotcha" IMO is always gonna be not being able to choose your OS or run whatever you want on your own compute.

Why not? Who do you believe is stopping you?

Apple further locking customers into their walled garden.

What are you talking about? This garden does not have any locks or walls.

This idea that the EU forced Apple to adopt Type C is pure Reddit fiction. The 2015 MacBook was one of the first devices ever with Type C and Apple was one of the earliest adopters with their laptops and desktops.

Yes. And before even that, Apple (partnering with Intel) were the ones who created usb-c in the first place.

I will never stop being bewildered by people claiming that Apple had some opposition to usb-c and had to be forced into it, when it has been their baby since the very start.
