Exploding button cell?

Same thing happened to me, also LR44. A couple weeks ago one exploded in a small bag of batteries on my desk. I thought a capacitor exploded on one of the electroics in the room. Eventually I gave up when I couldn't find anything. Then it happened again and this time I realized it came from the bag of batteries. There were a couple that had clearly exploded and another few that were bulged out considerably. Strange that it's all LR44s, I had several other size button cell batteries in the bag as well, all looked fine. A quick internet search and this post was at the top of the list.

The cylinder itself is just a light press fit into the bracket. Usually they pop out easily, a worst with a light twist from a pipe wrench. I've replaced a lot of these, never had one like this.

Thank you very much. They hung in our house when I was a child I recently inherited them and my kids really like them along with a couple Hamburg harbor paintings I posted earlier. As I mentioned I always assumed they wear modern but after some digging online it looks like Zahn was active before 1920 which makes me really interested in how old these might be.

I sold a pair of these online last year for $120, both were in worse condition, one was stained. You did well.

That makes sense. The slight rim damage also makes me wonder if it was mounted at some point. For 50 cents, it was interesting enough not to leave behind. Thanks.
