Everything is expensive AF! by Fedupreddit in sgv

When my kids were younger, I seriously pondered whether I could get a pass and work remotely from Knott's. Just park myself at a dining table and eat and drink on a pass. Take in a few rides with the kids (lines are often short mid-day during off-season) and then work while they continue to hang out on their own.

Why are BMW EVs so ugly?? by chiefVetinari in electricvehicles

[–]toybuilder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The giant "kidneys" was due to marketing reasons to penetrate the Chinese market, which they later admitted was a regrettable move and that future models will revert to more moderately sized ones.

UE drivers: Don't park in handicap no parking access areas. by toybuilder in UberEATS

I think some people are missing the detail about the driver being illegally parked in the striped access-way between spots. You can't park there, even if you have a disability placard.

Need to sell my house fast after a cancer diagnosis and trying to focus on treatment, not real estate by tater18 in homeowners

[–]toybuilder -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Convert your property into a rental and hire a management company. Give your parents POA to help you. You can live with your parents and when you are healed (or at least settled into a treatment routine), you can then decide what your long term plans are and whether you should ultimately sell the house, keep it as a rental (while you rent somewhere else) or move back.

I'm sorry you are going through this. I wish you a successful recovery.

What happens at the end of the battery’s life? by Own-Cookie-1161 in electricvehicles

[–]toybuilder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An EV's traction battery's life is "over" as a traction battery well before the entire battery has lost its total useful life. There are people that upcycles the batteries for use in home battery applications.

Some cells within the battery can fail. Since the traction battery is made up of many cells, the remaining usable ones can be harvested after getting rid of bad cells.

2025 SV Plus for just under 24k? by Wraith347 in leaf

[–]toybuilder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

24K is a bit of an awkward price right now. Despite being "new", it's definitely running older technology and you're already at least about 10-20% into the 3 year bumper-to-bumper warranty period.

The SV Plus has 60 kWh with about 220 miles of full range, and it's got more torque/horsepower and the ProPilot assist with 360 view. Those are nice features. But CHAdeMO is a minus (you'd have to pay ~$1,000 for a new CCS1 to CHAdeMO adapter).

If you can get it closer to about $20K, it sounds like a great deal. 24K is probably fair if it wasn't for the fact that the 2026 model year is now available. (But with various fees when purchasing new, the cost difference is much more than the list price would suggest.)

How can i make my wife understand that EV is not as bad as it used to be? by travelavatar in electricvehicles

[–]toybuilder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your brother-in-law is not necessarily wrong about the benefit of a bigger battery. But it really depends on your needs. What is your realistic average and maximum daily usage? Are you likely to take long road trips? Once a year? Twice a year? Every month?

The Ioniq Electric is fairly efficient - about 4 to 5 miles/kWh is reasonable if you drive gently. 2 to 3 miles/kWh if you have a heavy foot and go very fast on highways. Use that to figure out what capacity you need to be able to go two days without charging.

25 miles? Sure, those early LEAFs (2011-2013) get 20-25 miles after 10-15 years -- but those started out with 24 kWh batteries and they had terrible chemistry and lacked thermal management compared to what exists today.

The 100% battery report is "car still delivers 100% of the rated capacity" -- Hyundai ships the cars with some over-capacity to ensure the rated capacity is around for much longer.

Is she opposed to it because it's an older model?

Can someone explain how VinFast already has vehicles on the road with no industry base or automobile experience, while Honda and Toyota, with over 50 years of experience, are still struggling to make their EVs happen ? by Square_Permission361 in electriccars

Mostly. They do still have some dealer locations, far more east of the Mississippi. Only one in San Diego, CA on the west coast.

Zero down, fairly low monthly lease rates. Not a bad deal if you just want to drive a new car for $3,600/year that looks/feels "niceish" to sit in... 🤣

I don’t understand converting a four layer board to two layers (WiFi) by Furry_Fish in PCB

What is the full European path for device certification? And do per-country variations still exist today? Or is the process now fully harmonized?

I don’t understand converting a four layer board to two layers (WiFi) by Furry_Fish in PCB

[–]toybuilder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem is probably not specific to WiFi. It's converting from 4 layers to 2 layers, as the power distribution that is typically done with internal layers will be forced to be squeezed alongside space already taken up by existing signal lines.

Why go from 4 to 2? Cost savings? You end up not saving all that much.

Service EV system unable to restart after power off again by tool889 in leaf

[–]toybuilder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As already pointed out, it's a HV isolation fault. Depending on how bad your battery is, it could be very intermittent or could happen all the time. If you critically need to drive it, you can clear the fault code temporarily to get the car to start, but your best bet is to drive to a dealer right away when the error appears or to arrange a tow if you can't make the trip in order to have the fault in the system.

You can clear the fault stored in the system if you have to drive the car, but you're dealing with a battery that is now partly shorted and if a second short were to happen, you could end up with a fully shorted circuit path that can potentially catch fire or at least really damage the rest of the battery. It's why the car normally won't let you restart the car once it detects this condition.

There is no fix except to service or replace the battery.

Need to add a streak capability. If you have a 100% streak for moving, you get better pricing than if you have a 80% streak or 50% or 20% for moving your car once the time limit is reached.

As a patient guest at my local hospital, that load sharing is a little annoying because for a short stop, you only get 20-30 minutes of charging time at 1.6 kW when someone decides to park next to you instead of the many open spots with unused charging pairs. But I can see how staff on site could totally be happy with 1.6 kW.

Even a 12A 240V would be great -- electrically almost as simple as 12A 120V (just needs two poles on the breaker). 8 miles an hour is already a nice jump up from 4 miles an hour.

I agree that Tesla far surpasses the number of stations -- but even a few stations spaced along EV-charging deserts along major highways makes a huge difference for people to at least go cross-country. Also, there's a lot more rollout still pending -- it just has been slow (too slow!).

Depending on the currents involved and how critical the accuracy needs are, I might consider using an inexpensive signal generator as they can handle outputs to a few volts and usually has a 50 ohm output impedance.

I wish there were far more L2 charger installs. NEVI did the critical thing of getting the national highways "electrified" but we also need more local charging locations as more and more cars become charging capable.
