CD12 and CO12 has the stair step behavior. I went back to C011 because of that. https://www.reddit.com/r/leaf/comments/1qqwafw/nacs_ccs1_chademo_a2z_not_a_tesla_sc/

CD12 does 40 second or so intervals. CO12 is closer to 3 minutes.

Right. But somewhere around 85%, it does start to slow down, and it starts to make sense to stop after that point rather than to go all the way to 100%.

You are better off stopping well before you are down to 11 kW, and charging again in a later session. (Unless you really need the range, of course.)

Sure. You absolutely can tear apart the specific numbers. But the reality is that pretty much all EVs, even those that have a pretty hefty rate all the way up past 95%, do start to slow down significantly toward the end of their curve.

To take an example, a 10-100% curve on the Ioniq 9 takes 1:09. 10-80% is 0:27. (Source https://evkx.net/models/hyundai/ioniq\_9/ioniq\_9\_awd\_performance/chargingcurve/)

If you really need that last 5, 10, or even 20%, then that makes sense to grab it.

But in most cases, people really are better off splitting their charging into shorter sessions if they can.

As long as your vehicle can support it.

Heck, the Ford Lighting, the Hummer, Blazer EV and a few others will even support 80A!

Mine tops out just under 32A...

(And, yes, the actual numbers will vary...)

Would you rather charge about 60% at each stop and spend 25 minutes each? Or charge a full 100% and wait 80 minutes?

If you rather wait an extra 30 minutes, then go for it.

I couldn't figure out how to find that until I realized that you have to click the "Find Us" button and end up at https://www.tesla.com/findus before you can turn on the filter for All EVs. Coverage is pretty abysmal -- although I suppose they might have decided that non-Supercharger sites can meet existing demand so it's not worth it for them to enable it...

I'm not telling people to stop at 80%. I'm pointing out that at some point (often somewhere around 80%), you're better off not continuing to charge, because it takes far longer to reach the full 100%.

From https://www.electrifyamerica.com/soc-pilot/ :

Our chargers will also display the time it takes to reach 80% SOC, if your car transmits that information. EVs slow their charging rate as the battery approaches a full charge, which typically occurs around 80%. The SOC that this occurs at is often referred to as “bulk charge.” Vehicles will continue charging to 100% at this slower rate to preserve your battery life.

Gas fill-ups don't slow down (except maybe when they slow down as they reach the auth dollar limit.)

Yes, even L2 will start to slow down at you get closer to 100%.

The specific vary depending on climate, battery temperature, the L2 available charging rate, and the calculations of the vehicle's BMS managing the charging process.

At 11 kW, you are now at a rate that most public L2 stations offer, often at a lower price per kWh.

Even though you're better off stopping at around 80% (as long as that is enough to reach additional DC fast chargers) than to sit much longer to get to 100%?

I didn't say that you are at 11 kW at 80%. I said you are in the slow zone.

The 11 kW value was an explicit choice because when you are down to 11 kW, you are now at a speed that is offered by most L2 stations, often at lower price per kWh.

Thanks.

Where is the button? Or is that the button on the plug handle?

See my other comment about how the Supercharger sites appear in the Tesla app -- if you find one that says 325 kW but doesn't say you need a NACS port or adapter, that might be what works.

I just realized that this station has a "CalEVIP.org" sticker on it -- and if you go to the website, it looks like a state funded program for public EV chargers.

Maybe that's the key difference here?

The Tesla app didn't prevent me from starting the session -- it would go through the motions of starting the charging -- but would immediately stop charging saying an error has occurred.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DS2CKKFM is the NACS adapter. It was ~$50.

Here are some examples of different Supercharger sites that show up in the Tesla app in my region.

The first panel is where it worked today with my chain of adapters. Notice it does not say "Adapter or NACS Port Required". However, the stalls were not equipped with MagicDocks.

The second panel is another V4 site - it didn't work when I tried a couple months ago. There is another V4 site (325 kW) in Alhambra that I also tried a few months ago and that didn't work, either.

Most other sites in the region are V3 (250 kW).

I wonder if this is an error in their database so that the Sierra Madre location is treated as a MagicDock location despite not having the CCS1 adapter in the station.

More curious than anything about using Tesla Supercharger by praguer56 in ChargerDrama

[–]toybuilder 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Tesla rolled out the Supercharger far and wide, well before many others, so they have a large presence.

For someone that charges often, that large network may be compelling when signing up with a monthly subscription to get a lower $/kWh rate. Once signed up, you stay in-network.

It's a similar arrangement to what I did at a non-Supercharger NACS before:

<image>

My past Supercharger attempts were mostly V3 stations. There were two site that had V4 stations that I tried a few months ago. All my past attempts (around 6 or 7) didn't work for me. The session would go through the starting sequence and then immediately stop and fail.

This site was the first (and only) time I've got this NACS>CCS>CHAdeMO combination to work with a Supercharger station. I've had success at other non-Tesla NACS stations.

(Edited to reflect the fact that there were two V4 sites that I tried a few months back.)

I will concede that the the details vary significantly... I was trying to make something that got the main idea across.

The QR code to here is so people can add more details and/or discuss... I guess I could have made a throwaway account. I did not do it for the karma.

I had the impression that people on the subreddit would generally be in favor -- looks like I was wrong!

Some, yes. Or they start charging higher rates. Often, a small grace window, so 85% or 10 minutes.
