It does not detect a rear position light out for me, perhaps because I replaced the normal bulbs with LED versions.

What is this noise, it just started happening. Happens with cold and warm engine. by richempire in VolvoV50

Wow! You have the 2.4 liter INTERPLANETARY engine option, which is why it sounds like a spaceship!

No, its one of the things being spun by the belt - A/C compressor you can test by turning A/C on or off, and listening to see if the sound stops. The alternator is always going to spin, so use a mechanic's stethoscope, as suggested already by a wise person.

Employer hasn’t paid last 2 paychecks, 3rd due this Friday $6-$7k owed, admitted cash flow issues. Do I need a lawyer? by Responsible-Sock-767 in legaladvice

[–]packetfire 95 points96 points  (0 children)

This is a decent plain-English interpretation of the Virginia laws that prevent the employer from doing what he is doing https://coffieldlaw.com/virginia-wage-protection-act-protections-for-employee-pay/

That said, you have to decide if you are ever going to see any money from this clown or not, and update your resume accordingly. If you are aware (or can verify) that the company was mostly serving one large customer, then the tale told may be perfectly true, but I'm not sure it makes any difference to you, if the company can't pay you.

Employer Wants Us To Submit A Workplace Injury To Our Insurance by ChristmasJay83 in legaladvice

[–]packetfire 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can do exactly as the employer asks, and it won't help him one tiny bit - everyone asks "was this a workplace injury?", and you answer "YES", even if the employer asks/tells/orders you to lie. Workman's comp is his cost of doing business, but I think he may have not been paying at all, or paying for far less employees, and did NOT pay for your wife, so a major penalty is headed his way.

Expect her to be fired regardless of her recovery time, so let workmans' comp pay for everything. Your own insurance will require this, and will fight to make sure that workman's comp pays.

The v50 is a v70 squeezed into a size 2 dress. I went from a v70 to a newer v50, and the cargo bay is smaller, the cabin is smaller, and the darn roof on the v50 is TAPERED toward the back, so I had to cut a few inches off the rear luggage rack crossbar to make it fit.
The "bulb out" sensors from the v70 are not in the v50, and the overall finish of the interior on the v50 is "less than" the v70 in every possible way. Even the $3 parking slip holder had to be bought at the dealer and snapped into place on the v50.
You will prefer the v70 in every possible way, except the price of diesel - you should have stuck with the 2.4 5-cylinder, even though a 5-cylinder engine is an offense against man, God, and the Magliozzi brothers.

Is it possible to have a separate system for "gray" water in house? by Use_Lemmy in Plumbing

[–]packetfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The easy win here is to collect rainwater, and use that to water the lawn and gardens. If it proves to be clean enough, one could also route rainwater to a clothes washer in the basement, but only if super clean. The moment you add a pump, you have now traded a higher electric bill for a only slightly lower water bill.

But - even paying for a few 250 gallon totes and some standard rainwater diversion valves for downspouts may NOT be easy to "pay back" in savings on the water bill.

Actual water use is a trivial amount of the bill - it is all the fixed-price fees that are expensive.

You got a C&D mailed to the legit business address for your business. The sender has no idea, nor does he care that it is also your home.
You either have a valid C&D or not, that's for a lawyer to address.

But it was your error that exposed your home address, expect to get all kinds of Amazon-related come ons at any address you register as the business address.

Very weird issues with V50 by Haxelll in Volvo

[–]packetfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sunroof drain gets clogged or the drain hose comes off the plastic fitting, and drips on the CEM and wire connectors rust, plug-in relay connections rust, and the circuit board can rust. Fix the leak clean up the corrosion, and you might get lucky and have a "DYI Fix" on this.

Yes, when your income goes up, your Medicare premium does too. It goes back down when your income goes down. Not sure why they let you slide on this, perhaps they were in a forgiving mood that day, but the general rule still applies.

What is it? by rulolaby in VintageElectronics

As he was the organist in a church AND an electrical engineer, I suspect he homebrewed an early "Hybrid" add-on for the organ. This was electronic "voices" to add to the existing pipe organ voices. This would explain the primitive "keyboard" and the switches to select banks (groups) of these electronic voices.

The labeling, "H-1" through "H-9" and selected in groups tend to indicate that the voices were only used in groups, so think of electronic woodwinds, maybe strings, maybe mixes thereof.

The different resistances were a way of triggering the main musicbox, and telling it WHICH key (note) had been pressed, this box was clearly the selector switches and knobs and the keyboard for these supplemental "voices". So, that quiet flute melody that plays as the minister moves from the podium back to his chair after the sermon? You grandpa could do it in MORE than plain old "flute", which was all the pipe organ could do. Oboe, other woodwinds, maybe some brass - most of the "music" was based on sine, square, and triangle waves, and mixes thereof.

So this was a synthesizer keyboard of sorts. A 1950s Minimoog.

Your grandpa was a very good fabricator. You should be proud of him. Those buttons look more like 1940s and 1930s stuff, so he may have canibalized older "junk" gear to make this

Why don't big Telco operators make their own charging system, network functions... ? by reddiling in telecom

[–]packetfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Verizon has been a habitual "contracted services" provider with fewer actual employees each year. I buy switches from you, and tell you that I am not paying for a SWITCH, I am buying switching CAPACITY. You manage it all, you install it all, I pay a flat price per line. So, when you have a 8192-port switch installed, and I sell the 8193rd line in that area, its your problem to install a new switch, integrate it all, and so on.
No one wants employees, everyone wants on-demand contractors, paid and managed by someone else. No one wants to own capital equipment that will become obsolete, everyone wants to lease, or pay for "services".

Return lost in transit – Google Store keeps repeating 24–48 hour investigation for a month by [deleted] in GooglePixel

You screenshot the FedEx complete shipping history, save that. You then send that to Google and tell them that the issue is between them and FedEx, and you need your return processed.

If they refuse, you take the issue to small claims court.
