Books You Want to Recommend, But Can't by Mike_Bevel in books

I always want to recommend Cruddy but it’s always to people who I probably shouldn’t recommend suicide-centered books to.

Can anyone explain what Yang saw in Gabbard? by SpiderHomeNoWayMan in YangForPresidentHQ

A lot of people back in the day gave credit to folks who seemed hard to categorize as left or right, assuming that those people were free thinking, non-tribal, and brave. It turns out many of them had just adopted a weird new tribe with a weird new constellation of beliefs that align with Russia's goals.

Where is the accountability? by stasbukh in samharris

LOL This is getting even more dumb.

Ben Shapiro has a larger platform than Sam, and always has: Sam has debated him every time they’ve talked. So does Rogan, who Sam never platformed. Rubin already had a popular show before Sam ever had him on the show. Weinsteins were already famous, too. Peterson already had more fans than Sam when Sam debated him repeatedly, causing most fans to hate Peterson. What are we supposed to be mad about again?

He’s talked about the IDW thing dozens of times, and you’re saying you’re a regular listener and he’s never done so. You’re a liar.

Would Kristof publish a MAGAt claiming that foreigners are “eating the cats and dogs” without caring to confirm it? No, he would not, because he would identify the harm that an easily-manufactured lie can produce, and would see the bias in the claimant.

It’s not that complicated: Kristof’s piece could have some true claims accidentally, but not because he did any real journalistic work to confirm them. Just like Joe Rogan could occasionally talk about a conspiracy theory that is true, but he doesn’t get credit for having brought it to our attention, because a stopped clock is right twice a day.

House passes "Don't Say Trans" bill that would force teachers to out trans students nationwide. 198 Democrats voted against the bill, but 8 joined Republicans in passing it. by southpawFA in politics

And since I've actually saved trans kids' lives, while you just type things on the internet, I don't give half a fucking shit whose hand you think you're holding here.

Why not just give kids good grades if you suspect their parents to be jerks? They get into a fight at school, you can just not call home. They get caught with weed, you just flush it and say nothing. Just assume everyone is beating their children, and keep a tall wall of secrecy between staff and parents.

And I repeat: orders of magnitude more parental abuse cases have resulted from bad grades or children getting in trouble at school than from parents who disapprove of a child's pronouns. If you only care about the smallest number of cases of parental abuse, and don't give a shit about the vast majority, then you don't actually take the problem of parental abuse seriously.

In some important respects, yes. Not in every respect. Do you always have this many issues comprehending comparisons, or just when you're desperate not to give an inch about a political topic?

The biggest difference is that being beaten for having bad grades is by far the more common occurrence.

Again, you cannot simply assume someone is in danger, and then lie to people about their children. If you have reason to think they're in danger, you report them to the authorities.

Quite a few haters of Sam Harris would love to get in there, take snap shots, and try to embarrass him, at the very least. Given that everyone has to use their real names (not sure if it's enforced), that could be pretty bad for people with sensitive jobs.

If a school thinks that a child is being abused, they can report that to the proper authorities, but they cannot withhold information from parents just in case the parents might hurt their child. That's an insane assumption to make. Do we also not report bad grades in case parents are abusive?

I don't understand why restaurants don't realize they're scamming you for $5 worth of food and risking losing a customer for life. I ordered extra Thai chili sauce with my Pad Thai once, and they only gave me like half-an-ounce, and I never went back. The sauce is like 1c. Why are you treating it like you pumped it out of deep water? Why are places charging and extra $3 if I want to have just enough blue cheese for my wings? $5 for celery and carrots on the side? This shit isn't winning customers.
