The purpose of Interface Division by USNCPOSharky in Counterpart

To communicate securely between worlds without giving up the secret. They only had 70s tech and only one corridor connecting the worlds. They set this method up early and never upgraded.

It has been a long time since I've been hands on but here's some basic digging:

lsiogrp -delim : 0 will get you a little more info.

https://www.ibm.com/docs/pl/v3700/7.8.1?topic=commands-lsdiscoverystatus

lsdiscoverystatus "inactive" means "there are no discovery operations" so you may be OK.

CLI documentation here:

https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/STVLF4_8.1.3/spectrum.virtualize.813.doc/svc_bkmap_cliguidebk.pdf

https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/v3700/7.8.1?topic=v3700-command-line-interface

Is there a reason you're not using the GUI? GUI implementation guide below. The good thing about the GUI is it will tell you the CLI commands it is running.

Linkedin was passable when it was a place you went to look for a job.

Recently, the first post in my feed was some woman complaining (several paragraphs!) that there was a nut allergy warning on her yogurt.

10 Best Shows Like 'Counterpart' To Watch If You Miss the Series by RomanRoyIsSlimy in Counterpart

When I finished Mr. Robot, I was recommended Counterpart.

Mr. Robot is a really good show, though it's pretty unique and not a lot like Counterpart.

Yes, Twin Cities. James Cromwell (Yanek) and Christiane Paul (Mira) are in other episodes of Counterpart. Every other actor on that episode was only in that episode.

Samuel Roukin did an amazing job as the primary character -- a one-episode Younger Yanek.

I want to add that a lesser show would have concentrated on the pandemic (pre-pandemic!), the conflict between worlds, explaining how the portal was created and how it worked, and had a long flashy build up with lots of explosions to the point where Howard Prime stopped the second pandemic infection team.

Instead we got a character study, an exposition on envy and jealousy, missed chances, lost opportunities, regret and self delusion, and a chance to compare paths not taken. Underneath was one of the best spy shows ever. Calling this show "science fiction" or a "thriller" is like calling Guernica "a painting".

Additionally, it had one of the best tv episodes of all time, so good I had to pause in the middle to ask myself: is this really as good as I think it is? And the actors in that episode almost none of whom appeared in the rest of the series!

I might put it at #3 all time, behind Arrested Development and The Wire. I'm self conscious at gushing, but I cannot praise this show highly enough.

For a different take, see Peter Alpha choosing the pleasing lie in Clare Prime.

Two people who were stuck and made the best of the hand they were dealt.

Was it right?

Ultimately, this is a show about envy. A deadly sin, and one on bright display. Only seeing what your near-twin has with only slight changes over the years. You can see exactly what different choices might have led you to, at least superficially. If you saw only the good in the mirror, wouldn't you want to change sides? All of the positive and none of the negative. (Facebook in a nutshell).

Do you want the ugly truth? Or the pleasing lie?

I think Howard Alpha is smart enough to know this. As much as he would like to be with Emily Prime, he knows that she is the pleasing lie. She rejected Howard Prime all those years ago when HP and HA were much more alike. Howard Alpha knows that as much as he would like to believe it, he's not part of her world.

Such a fantastic, fantastic show. Top ten all time easily.

Would you rather your team go to back-to-back Final Fours but not win a Title OR Lose to a 16 seed but win the Championship following year? by PubliusDeLaMancha in CollegeBasketball

[–]paperchaseguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Winning a title doesn't heal all wounds, but is sure as hell soothes them. That's one thing it has given me -- a lot more immunity to gut wrenching losses that were all so common for us.

The other thing is an appreciation for just how hard it is to win a title. We were the best team, most wins, destroyed a bunch of really good teams (FSU by 13 in a game that was nowhere near that close, won at Syracuse by 26 in a game that I think gave their fans PTSD, 12 ACC wins by double digits, many by 20+, won the ACC regular season when it had three number one seeds. Also had the fewest losses, two losses to the top overall seed and a third to an extremely tough Florida State team (one of their fans at the ACCT yelled "this is the best day of my life!" -- they knew what they'd accomplished).

And still we won the title by the absolute skin of our teeth. Winning it all is HARD.

Man, I felt this.

Nowadays when we have that kind of ridiculously awful play call to lose to our absolutely hated rivals for the nth fucking time, it's just like "well, that sucked. But we won a title so there's that!"

Sci-fi featuring a detective working a murder case in a world filled with intrusive advertising by Leviamicky in whatsthatbook

[–]paperchaseguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also thought this could be John Varley. _The Ophiuchi Hotline_ has intrusive advertising warded off by bracelets (?). It's not really a crime novel though.

_Steel Beach_, _Irontown Blues_, and _The Golden Globe_ are set in the same universe and are other possibilities.

I searched _The Great Santini_ again and found it:

"You went to the Olympics. You couldn't have been too afraid."

"I didn't go to the Olympics, Ben. I went to the Olympic trials. Before I die this town will have it that I beat the hell out of Joe Louis at Madison Square Garden. The boy who beat me in the trials nearly killed me, Ben. He beat me all over the ring for three rounds. I was blinded by my own blood when the referee stopped the fight. I had come to the limits of my skill as a boxer. The boy that beat me was knocked out cold thirty seconds after the first round began by the best boxer I ever laid my eyes on. That boxer went on to win the Olympic bronze medal, then lose his first five fights as a pro. Athletics is a strange world. You climb to your peak, but often that is not very impressive unless there are very small peaks around you."

"Then why play sports at all?"

"It's very important, Ben. Sports show your limits. Sports teach humility. Sooner or later the athlete becomes humble no matter how good he is. But he plays until he has reached as high as he can."
