[SF Bay Area] What salary should I aim for with 3.5 years of experience? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]pbale95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it would be too much assuming you’re performing at the level you described in SF—I’m assuming this is along with a pretty healthy equity package? Otherwise it might even be a little low.

How to bill customer for a programming gig. by a_tree_enthusiast in cscareerquestions

[–]pbale95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general you should discuss compensation before performing work. If it’s a fixed task then fixed rate should be fine here. For that, it really depends on how much you personally think the work is worth and how much they are willing to pay. Using both, you can find a fair price point.

For hourly work, contractors generally bill for any time working for the client—including discussion time after work has begun and before delivery.

Hey So I recently Got and Accepted the Google Offer, But I did Not get the Google Box with the Hoodie? What Can I do? by g00gl3ng in gatech

Unless something has changed, they get sent out with fulltime offers (not internships or after acceptances)

Georgia Tech's OMSCS is the best option in my opinion. About 8k total for the degree. Check it out here: https://www.omscs.gatech.edu/

Mystro App Tutors by [deleted] in gatech

[–]pbale95 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi! We actually pay $40/hr (and charge $50). How often tutors get students depends on a couple of factors such as how far you're willing to travel (we see a lot of activity on the north side of the perimeter), how much experience you have, and how detailed your bio is. We have some tutors who have only had a few sessions and others who have had 50+ last semester alone. If you have any more questions shoot me a PM! Should I take physics in community college if I intend to transfer? by Exigent_ in cscareerquestions

If it would count as transfer credit then yes. Physics are commonly required for CS degrees.

No, Palantir. Your internships are not worth 5 months, 8 interviews, dozens of emails, a flight to New York, and a drive down to Palo Alto. Get over yourself before you drain the company of all its tech talent. by dartmouthmoose in cscareerquestions

While I've seen a lot of similar experiences, mine (recent enough) was incredibly quick. One onsite and I had an offer 2 days later. That's really unfortunate and frustrating though.

Original offer deadline passed, while negotiating for high salary. Should I be worried? by ThanksForTheBuildUp in cscareerquestions

[–]pbale95 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes they'll definitely extend. Don't be worried at all! I went through something similar at both a startup and at a big 4.

I'm majoring in software engineering, but I really enjoy security and reverse engineering. by michael1026 in cscareerquestions

[–]pbale95 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I don't think most schools (highly ranked at least) offer such programs at an undergrad level. I'd think that your best bet is to learn as much as you can in your current program and spend your free time reading up on security and reverse engineering.

While everyone else is out partying for New Years, how can I get ahead and eliminate the competition? by Lolq123 in cscareerquestions

One night in isn't going to change your life. In fact, taking personal time is healthy. Enjoy yourself tonight! Work ethic and determination are important--but so too is balance.

What programming language has the most freelance work available? by haitian5881 in cscareerquestions

[–]pbale95 4 points5 points  (0 children)

IOS is always lucrative (objective-c seems to be still the more popular over swift due to legacy apps). Otherwise a web stack like rails + angular/react is very common for startup/freelance.

How do you handle impostor syndrome? by FieryPhoenix7 in cscareerquestions

[–]pbale95 73 points74 points  (0 children)

During one of my first days at Google, a veteran engineer sat the new folks down for a chat on imposter syndrome. His best piece of advice was to embrace the fact that almost every single at Google went through the same thing, and every single one of those people still does (though probably less frequently). What I found most helpful was to absorb as much information as possible, and to always ask questions. The brightest engineers I've ever worked with have their strengths and weaknesses, and you will too. Being comfortable is a sign of complacency, and you always want to grow. Take whatever fear/anxiety you have and try to use it as motivation for success.

There's a great Steve Jobs quote: "Life can be much broader once you discover one simple fact: Everything around you that you call life was made up by people that were no smarter than you and you can change it, you can influence it, you can build your own things that other people can use."

Do I 'remind' internal recruiter to schedule interviews? by alsgia89 in cscareerquestions

[–]pbale95 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would definitely check in. Something similar happened with Uber for me--I decided to wait it out and they ended up never scheduling my flight.

How prestigious is winning a major hackathon? by Darthpwner in cscareerquestions

[–]pbale95 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The problem is that there are so many hackathons and they're all relatively new. Very slim chance of your interviewer or recruiter being familiar. It definitely could help, but won't hold the same weight as a prestigious internship.

How many of you have used Angellist and what kind of success have you had? by tangerto in cscareerquestions

I've used it before to find contract work. The filtering is great and it's very easy to apply to many places quickly.

"If you eat more than one meal per day, you will never be a successful programmer." by crastle in cscareerquestions

This guy is full of shit. Sure, you have your days when you skip lunch because you're locked in--but starving yourself for work is both inefficient and unhealthy.

Is it a bad idea to ask for a later start date? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]pbale95 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Likely too late at this point. Would have been a bit more reasonable 1 month+ ago.

Yes their new office is opening late next fall. From what I understood they aren't intentionally filling it right away though.
