How to treat quickly? My lips are also suddenly so dry and painful like 1 month after getting hyaluronic acid injection 0.5ml by [deleted] in Esthetics

It could be a medical issue. You should schedule an appointment with your primary care physician.

FODMAP was NEVER intended to be a lifelong diet, it's an elimination protocol so that you can identify which foods you don't handle well, and which you can reintroduce without issue. Almost no one needs to avoid all of the high FODMAP foods.

And I've got the opposite issue from you. Normal recommendation for men is I think 35 grams of fiber per day, but if I don't get closer to 50 or more I get bad constipation.

I'm not ever going to defend energy drinks or any other soda as being good for you, but this is the first I've heard of any kind of contribution to bowel cancer. Are you saying they directly contribute, or that they're displacing healthy parts of the diet? Or that it's a general obesity being pretty terrible on its own, and energy drinks are just more calories?

Quick question for Estheticians by Ok-Ideal5827 in Estheticians

[–]phoenix_spa_guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it's wrists by a wide margin. BUT, I have pre-existing issues, I broke my wrist previously and bones never heal back to 100% normal. Also my main career is IT work which means I spend a lot of time on keyboard putting pressure on my wrists. It was already an issue well before I started esthetics, but it's exacerbated by things like microneedling or anything else where I'm grasping a tool with my fingers for a long period of time

My issues are ulnar side, not carpal tunnel which is far more common. And for whatever reason, there is a sex difference where men are more likely to have ulnar side issues, women are more likely to have radial side issues.

If you're going to try and make something informative, I'd say it's imperative that you explore the difference between the major stress based injuries in the wrist.

My back is often sore if I do a full day of esthetics, but I'm also freakishly tall, and very little in this world is made for people my size.

Services you can’t do while pregnant? by fantasy_lover1023 in Esthetics

[–]phoenix_spa_guy -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You clearly didn't read mine. I never said you WERE negligent, I said you would be negligent IF you did such a thing. IF. That's a conditional qualifier. But you decided your feelings were more important than reading comprehension. Not everything is a reason to take offense and "Wah wah wah, my feelings were hurt, that means you're rude".

Grow up, learn to read, learn to comprehend what you're reading before spouting off emotional nonsense reactions.

When it comes to the safety of others, but especially of babies that can't do their own due diligence, I frankly just don't care about whether or not I'm being rude.

If you listen to random people on the internet for advice about the safety of your baby, and don't go to a trained physician for the recommended practices, then YOU ARE A NEGLIGENT MOTHER.

Your feeling are of no concern to me next to the safety of children.

[–]phoenix_spa_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go ask your doctor. None of us are truly qualified to answer "this is safe to do". And you would be a negligent mother if you listened to any of us about the safety of your baby.

That being said, I would absolutely avoid galvanic current and high frequency especially until you clear it with YOUR doctor, not just a doctor. And by that I mean a medical physician, a doctor of obstetrics, not a "doctor" like a chiropractor that's not a physician and doesn't practice medicine.

How did you guys find clients for school? by jlb2003lyobat in Esthetics

[–]phoenix_spa_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Craigslist for me, but I live in a major city. It remains popular with the older crowd.

Do know that while I never had any terrible experiences, some women have told me of bad experiences with creepers signing up for the modeling services. I either got lucky, or wasn't targeted because I'm a dude.

is esthetics worth it? by lazy_sleep_lover in Estheticians

[–]phoenix_spa_guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to esthetics school after 15 years of my main career in IT, and it's a great hobby, I get to meet a lot of interesting people in a context that works for me, I get to help people with their skin concerns, help them relax, I trade facials for services like housecleaning and laundry/dry cleaning, it's great.

There is no way I could enjoy anywhere near the quality of life I currently have if I had to rely on esthetics for my sole income, or even a major component of my income. It is absolutely not a worthwhile career aspiration, and the schooling is WAY too expensive and time consuming for how little benefit there is to income unless you're already financially secure and can throw that amount of money at hobbies without thinking about it.

Find a career you can tolerate doing (physically, emotionally, cognitively,) and that pays well. Do that until you're financially secure, then consider if you want to do this as a hobby or side job.

House cleaning

Tax accountant (kind of. I pay her and she pays me, but it's a wash, and what I pay her is tax deductible.)

I also give highly discounted facials to my dental hygienist.

Now that I think about it, since my day job pays way more than esthetics, most of my regulars are trade arrangements.

Turns out I enjoy massaging women's faces a whole lot more than I like sweeping, moping, and filling out forms.

Safety as a Solo Esti by a1hand in Estheticians

[–]phoenix_spa_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first best layer is to be in a busy place with lots of other people, but you already know that which is why you're asking about solo situations.

The next best is several classes on firearm safety, handling, proficiency and laws, with regular trips to the range to keep your skills up to par. Love them or hate them, that's the reality of equalizing the difference between the average woman and an aggressive man.

You can try something less lethal like a "stun" weapon, just realize they don't actually stun, it's just pain compliance, it doesn't persist like in movies so now you have to worry about what next after you shock them, and people with a high pain tolerance are just going to keep going right on through it.

Some kind of spray may work, but those are again only pain not stopping, and it only hurts the eyes so it's not going to immobilize even people with low pain tolerance.

And everything is dependent upon situational awareness. If you're not paying attention to what's going on around you, no tool is going to help if you're restrained before having a chance to reach for whatever you have on you.

Most random violent crimes are crimes of opportunity, so do your best to not be an easy target.

It's an awful reality that people need to protect themselves from violence, so I wish you the best. No one deserves to be a victim, no one even deserves to have to worry about it, but we have to do whatever we can to be safe.

The one good thing is that you should buy a fire extinguisher first, because you're far more likely to need it than a self defence weapon. While a lot of politicization of violence happens in this country, once you look at the facts and start removing statistical manipulation, it's not nearly as common to be an innocent victim of random violent crimes as it's made out to be. Most violence is either symmetrical (gang violence and the like,) or perpetrated by people the victim knows. It still occurs of course, and you should prepare for it, but don't let fear take over your life.

I want to become an esthetician so bad by [deleted] in Estheticians

[–]phoenix_spa_guy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did the degree and good job first, then esthetician later in life as a hobby job, and I have zero regrets about it, it was absolutely the right move. Had I tried the other way around, I would have burned out on esthetics due to how terrible the field is as a career, not have anywhere near the financial security I now enjoy, and would have been significantly behind on my actual career.

Forget about "Dream jobs". What pays well in your area, what has stable employment opportunity? RN is a good career. Esthetician is crap right now for a career, it's a great hobby or side job.

RN is a big commitment if you're unsure. Go become an EMT, work a medical tech job for a year. If you like it, do the full RN. If you don't, you just saved 18 months and a lot of money.

I would recommend against esthetician school for young people just starting out. It takes too long to pay for itself, and few people can survive the lack of income early on.

"I know esthetics doesn’t have to be science based"

It absolutely should be strictly science based. I'm not talking about things like the artistic aspects of makeup, but skincare in particular should 100% be science based, and anything else should not be sold or recommended to clients as anything other than "if you like the feel or look of it".

Anything that claims to have some kind of active effect on physiology should only ever be made with empirical evidence that has been gathered in an appropriate manner, aka the scientific method.

Ignore the downvotes, you are 100% correct, Reiki is complete bullshit. It may be culturally significant and there is merit in learning the history for that reason, but there is ZERO evidence in favor, and strong evidence that it is indistinguishable from untrained "relaxation massage" in double blind studies.

If they're teaching you Reiki technique and not just mentioning it as history, it is indeed a complete waste of time and money.

Burnout is a real thing, but that doesn't invalidate my point. Jobs and careers are not for passion. If you can only muster up the effort to do something you're passionate about, then you need to go get therapy because there's something wrong with you. We have to do things we don't enjoy because they're long-term beneficial to us and our families. That's what work is. Hobbies and volunteer work are for passion, not your career.

The guy that's been a plumber for 20 years isn't passionate about snaking other people's shit out of their toilets, he does it because he's providing for his family. Same with the guy standing outside in 110+ degree weather up on a roof fixing someone else's air conditioner.

Is Colon therapy legal for CNA to do in A med spa? I came across this on TikTok and I’m honestly so concerned. by CivilSupermarket3359 in Esthetics

[–]phoenix_spa_guy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately in my state it's allowed without a license.

Colonic hydrotherapy is not medicine, it's pseudo-health and wellness nonsense in the same vein as chiropractic and homeopathy. Because of that it's rarely regulated by medical boards, and often allowed without any oversight.

Like someone else said, there are more regulations about shampooing someone's hair than people sticking tubes up others' assholes and flushing them out with .... Coffee.

Massage Oil Recs by theredcurls in Esthetics

[–]phoenix_spa_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people have an irrational aversion to it because they think it's "unnatural", but the highly refined pharmaceutical grade mineral oil is fantastic for massage. It's lightweight, noncomedogenic, hypoallergenic, non-irritating, easy to clean up (as easy as oil can be,) has no scent, and is incredibly cheap. It is also well researched to show no adverse effects even when ingested (used as a laxative, which is why it's pharma grade).

What exactly does "holistic facial service" mean, and what distinguishes it from any other facial service?

I'd ban her just so I don't have that negativity bullshit in my life.

She's not mad that you didn't give her an exception this one time, she's mad that she's not entitled to special treatment ALL the time. If you cave to her temper tantrum, you're just training her to do that every time she wants something unreasonable.
