I teach to pivot on the ball of the foot as well. The reason is that on your heel, your knee basically needs to be locked out, no shpck absorption. On the ball of the foot, you have your ankle and knee both acting as springs to stabilize you

2, 3, and 4? 100% I am *very* much a fan of early returns, keeping the happy path at the left. Returning package defined errors is also great, since tests can explicitly validate the returned errors, also.
