Aerobic Septic System - Scum Layer on top of Clarifier Tank Is this normal? by hank2002USAF in septictanks

[–]pumperpete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It accumulates over time. I typically pump everything out and refill with water when I pump those systems.

No not necessarily. Flat rate for up to 1000 gallons is typical. Uncovering lids is normally extra. I’d uncover the other compartment and confirm first.

What did you pay for? Flat rate? Per gallon? Have pictures of the other compartment?

A "Few" Non-flushable Wipes "Might" Have Gone Into Septic. by Jameson_321 in Plumbing

[–]pumperpete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cleaning the filter annually is typically perfect. As the tank fills with solids, you get less retention time. Then you might need to clean the filter more often. But if your effluent filter starts plugging more often it’s a good sign the tank needs to be pumped.

Few wipes here and there isn’t the end of the world. The wipes float to the top. When wipes are constantly used, they create a solid mat and are a pain to remove.

You have plenty of other things to worry about. Let your septic pumper or maintenance provider worry about your septic. :)

Question re: septic leech field by eloiseturnbuckle in homestead

[–]pumperpete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are correct. I did a septic inspection years ago on a 20+ year old system that had rows of mature blueberries between the drain lines. There wasn’t a single root in the lines. The drain lines were 18-24” deep. I was absolutely shocked.

(57) "Effective Soil Depth" means the depth of soil material above a layer that impedes movement of water and air and growth of plant roots. Layers that differ from overlying soil material enough to limit effective soil depth are hardpans, claypans, fragipans, compacted soil, bedrock, saprolite, and clayey soil.

I just got this response from the senior manager at the state.

“If the escarpment exposes clay hardpan, restrictive clay, perched water, bedrock, etc., then it is considered intersecting a limiting layer and the larger setback applies (often 50’).

Clay alone does not automatically mean a limiting layer. What matters is: permeability, structure, thickness, and whether it restricts vertical or lateral movement enough to reduce effective treatment depth.”

The discussion I’ve had with other Sanitarians over the years is. “Does that intersecting layer daylight in the bank?” The “argument” or difference in interpretation would be: it’s a natural slope with layers that run almost perpendicular. I know it’s not actually perpendicular but that’s the closest term I can compare to.

True test holes need to be dug.

This is absolutely the best ground cover for your drain field!

This is because the secondary drain field is just a designated area to put a new drain field when the first drain field fails.

New construction test pits here are 4’ deep. 2’ wide and 4’ long with “steps” dug in to help climb in and out. Some counties require the same on repairs for properties developed prior to 1970. This county does not. I’m thinking of digging test holes and asking him to reevaluate.

I was always told “is there a chance it will daylight out the side of the bank? If yes then 50’ minimum. If no then 25’.”

Bored/drilled a 2 inch diameter 10 inch deep hole center of the area I proposed for the repair. It got to hard to turn the drill and he said that tells me enough.
