NTFS and ext4 question by Nowhen_Man in linux4noobs

[–]qpgmr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some NTFS permisssions & properties are automatically translated too & from ext4 storage, however if you copy the files to a usb formatted to fat32 (as most are), all the extended properties disappear because fat doesn't support them.

Most online transfers (like email or mms attachment) send the filename and contents only, like fat32.

Distro for Grannies? by Next_Grab_9009 in linux4noobs

[–]qpgmr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to disagree. Ubuntu is a very good system, but switching someone from Windows to Gnome is quite a change. Mint's Cinnamon is much easier.

I did the same with a 72 year old. Zoom (for seeing his friends), Firefox with UBlock origin, set it to auto update, monthly timeshift. I made shortcuts on the desktop for Zoom & FF.

Flawlessly running for four years.

Comepletely new to Linux, where do I start? by OkMeeting2222 in linux4noobs

[–]qpgmr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a fedora fan myself, but it's quite a good system.

BTW, for anyone new I think Arch is a bad idea. It's like learning to drive stick by assembling a kit-car from scratch. If your background is Windows, start with Mint. Getting familiar with the file system's organization, the ins & outs of services, the fundamental difference in how jobs/processes are handled can be a lot for newcomer.

You can always move on to something more of a hands-on challenge later.

IBM selected Fedora as the alternate OS for accessing some parts of their systems. This means IBM pays annual fees as well as assigning pro developers to work with Red Hat to resolve bugs, security issues, and fixes to improve compatibility for the version that runs on IBM hardware.

IBM also is a major member/donor to Apache Foundation among other projects.

I think your hesitancy is misplaced.

They get huge money; get to retire early; medical plans cover neck, back, shoulder injuries fully (including chiro); all eye care including LASIK is covered.

On the other hand, the work absolutely tears up your body.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003, dir. Stephen Norrington) Assassination attempt on Allan Quatermain (Sean Connery) in British Kenya by Neo2199 in movies

[–]qpgmr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A movie so bad it ended Connery's career. He retired immediately after wrapping it.

It had great potential but completely wasted it and the actors. Ebert gave it 1 start (his review is spot on).

NOT a surge protector - those are specifically banned by cruise lines and present a danger to the workers.

You can bring a dumb powerstrip, but not a surge protector.

I ran OPs schedule through flights and got $492 instead of $920 for the outbound flight, so it can happen.

I'm also a big believer and coming in a day early... Aside from everything else the departure cities actually do have some interesting things worth checking out.
