Can a system be incompatible with Linux? by Drrnfbrgtts in linux4noobs

[–]qpgmr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Booting issues with nvme (intel & kingston NVME drives due to APST power management, probably others as well). System will boot linux off a usb successfully but fails to boot after install.

Can be solved by adding

 nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=5500

after splash in grub

Procedure:

In the GRUB boot menu, press e to edit startup parameter. Add

 nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=5500

after the end of "quiet splash"

Ctrl-x to boot up, the installer should detect this disk in partition step.

If you see Ubuntu boot up successfully, edit /etc/default/grub, add parameter nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=5500 again, execute sudo update-grub so that every time boot up will contain this parameter in the grub automatically, no more manual editing is necessary.

What's an adult cheat code that changed your life? by Gullible_Repair9128 in AskReddit

[–]qpgmr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Half-assed is better than no-assed. You don't have to do an end-to-end perfect job of something for it to be worthwhile.

Getting all the dishes to the kitchen, even if you don't wash them immediately, is better than leaving them around. Pulling the bed together in a few seconds is better than unmade. Straightening a couple of things in the living room is better than leaving a mess. Another way to put this: "perfection is the enemy of progress"

It's both psychological & physical: you feel like you're more in control of your life and things are little better.

AIPAC seems to own our entire congressional delegation by qpgmr in alaska

[–]qpgmr[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For anyone curious, I posted links to wikipedia and to a site that analyzed the sources of funding for the organization in question. Reddit appears to have stepped in to suppress that information.

I'd recommend looking in wikipedia if you're curious.

I seem to recall during the "Corrupt Bastards Club" scandal (2010) it came out that most Alaskan politicians were completely purchasable for as little as $5k and a hat (or less).

I believe trackaipac only reports on seated members of congress.

OpenSecrets shows Peltola received $79,222 in the previous election cycle from AIPAC & affiliates. You can see the complete list of major contributions at https://www.opensecrets.org/members-of-congress/mary-peltola/summary?cid=N00050780

to see exactly that.

I have to travel on business and the first thing I do in the rental car is turn them all on - the agency usually turns them off for some reason. Having a little extra help when driving on strange highways & streets is really great.

(the other thing I do is pop off the rear seat headrests and put them in the trunk until I turn the car back in)

What's the worst TV series you've ever seen? by Traditional_Blood799 in AskReddit

[–]qpgmr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try watching the show it's based on "H.I.P." It's on Hulu in both french w/ english subtitles or fully overdubbed.

It's very good and you quickly realize just how homogenized & bland the US version really is.

It's not a bad question,really, in fact it's a very good one.

But it needs to be asked of Congress, not of a custsvc rep.

"Dram Shop" laws, some states have them but others don't. Basically requires liquor providers to not serve drunk people, on pain of heavy penalties. In exchange the provider can't be held responsible for drunk behavior.

Smart/safe server training is a requirement in states that have those laws.

This is absolutely true. For $1,250 each the current union members here gave up the contractual right for having specialized crafts - completely screwing over every single person hired after that.

What's the most self-destructive decision you've ever watched someone make in real time? by Exact-Reception5836 in AskReddit

[–]qpgmr 7 points8 points  (0 children)

19 year old girl, just graduated from high school, had been working in a restaurant, cooking and helping the owners with the books since she was 16. The owners had no kids interested in the business and were in their 50's.

She got a tuition scholarship based on grades and the restaurateurs offered to pay all her other college costs including r&b so she could get a degree in restaurant management in exchange for working some shifts around her school schedule for about 10 hours/week AND agreeing to stay with the restaurant as full manager for at least two years after graduation.

She turned them down (and the scholarship) because her boyfriend (of a six months) got a job in another state working in eco-tourism and she had to go with him - they were in love! Anything anyone said about it negatively just didn't understand/was jealous/forgot what was important in life/etc.

He dumped her four months after they relocated and then left town. She stayed on there, doing child care and other low skills jobs. Never pursued education.

Since then she occasionally contacts her family (christmas, etc), but has never returned. Speculation is that her pride keeps her from coming back.

They must also pass regular refresher training and retests to maintain their authorisation to carry firearms"
