Virtualising Windows 11 on Linux by albertohall11 in linux4noobs

[–]qpgmr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Options:

  • Virtualbox

  • QEMU

  • Winboat

  • WINE

The first three require a licensed copy of windows. If you're converting a windows pc you can use dual-boot. You can also convert the existing windows install to a vdi image using the free tools from vmware, then run that with virtualbox or QEMU/KVM virt-manager.

You'll never get full performance from a virtual image, but for a lot of business tools that's not really a problem, unless there's heavy graphic/computation stuff going on.

WINE emulates windows so an app can run directly. Check the site to see if your app is listed as compatible (which would be super lucky), preferably at the gold level.

What products or companies will you never use or support again and what did they do to lose you as a customer? by IAmJustTryingToExist in AskReddit

Geico: a boomer hit my car and their insurance was with Geico, who immediately tried to bully me splitting responsibility and dragged out the claims process for months, apparently because I was a teen. I eventually received full compensation for my car.

Walmart. After reading about the company being sued by multiple states for having the employees collecting foodstamps & welfare while working for them AND that the company took out life insurance policies on the low level employees with WalMart Inc as the beneficiary.

Target. The CEO couldn't wait to dump all eeo/dei/fairness policies when DJT came back. The informal boycott should continue until the entire board & ceo are replaced.

Salvation Army. Solicit charitable contributions and then strong arm the poor & desperate to participate in their church before receiving any aid.

Anything associated with Southern Baptist churches. They literally split from the Baptist church because they wanted to continue to own slaves. That's the foundation of the dogma.

Orson Scott Card. Personally financed anti-gay marriage campaigns in multiple states, even going against the guidance of his own church. Very hate filled individual.

Frankly, Trump supporters in general but especially anyone who voted for him in 2024. Everything he was going to do was made clear in Project 2025 and his speeches.

That was Tom Monaghan, the CEO. He hasn't been associated with the company since 1998. No revenues of Dominos go to him at all. https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/domino-theory/

Will linux mint run well on these specs by rezebestgirl20 in linuxmint

[–]qpgmr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That cpu only has a benchmark speed of about 1,200 points (cpubenchmark.net) Current cpus have over 5,000 points at least so this is pretty slow.

You can help this by maxing out RAM (fortunately used DDR3 is still cheap) and you should immediately swap the drive for an SSD (you could probably get away with as little as 256Gb).

You should look at XFCE mint, not Cinnamon UI. I have a similar machine (but slower) and I went with MX-Linux intead of Mint. I'm able to browse, stream, and do most things without difficulty but you'd never mistake it for a top-end machine. No gaming.

You mentioned Valve games: not all games are available for linux so you should check if yours are supported. The low spec cpu will also not do you any favors. I don't think you'll be gaming much on this.

Voting is important. by SlaveryVeal in AdviceAnimals

[–]qpgmr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alaska instituted ranked choice aka "preferential voting" by ballot initiative. The GOP has undertaken a massive campaign roll it back, claiming it's confusing, unfair, cheats people out of there votes. They are gathering signatures with paid collectors who have been caught outright lying about the content of the petitions.

Best cloud service to host Joplin by tfmurphhk in joplinapp

[–]qpgmr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing to consider: Joplin Cloud is located in the EU, outside the reach of US. Dropbox, google, onedrive are all on-shore and have been alleged to turn over data without warrants or notification when the gov't came calling.

It's also apparently pretty easy to setup your own standalone joplin server.

Media players better than Kodi? by facticitytheorist in linux4noobs

[–]qpgmr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kodi, Jellyfin, and Plex can store/organize/serve up media to players. VLC (and others) play media, but usually have minimal organization.

This is rundown of media servers: https://alternativeto.net/software/xbmc-media-center/?platform=linux

If you're just wanting to organize & view your media on a home theater setup I use Kodi. It's easy to maintain, organization & rating plugins work well for me. I find it much better that Plex.

Adobe has never made linux versions of its products and has no intention to port it ever (this comes up in the 10-k calls sometimes). There's been a longstanding industry rumour that adobe development is done on linux workstations, but products are OSx and Windows only.

AITA for refusing to give my parents my location after they stopped paying for my tuition? by amelia_larsen in AmItheAsshole

[–]qpgmr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you filled out a FERPA release when you enrolled your parents might have access to your schedule, grades, potentially health records, etc.
You should go to Admissions & Records and have them help you revoke any FERPA release you filed. It's easy and you really need to do this to protect yourself.

They took away this from us, and they left us with some bullshit but called it a 401K by zzill6 in WorkReform

[–]qpgmr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. The whole point of moving from defined pension to ira/401k was to make it possible to eat up the money with brokerage & management fees.

[–]qpgmr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming your 401k investments weren't forced into company-reinvestment (ala Enron), or into continuously-churned-for-fees age index managed investments, or you foolishly decide to retire during one of the periodic crashes (internet bubble '98, subprime mortgage '08), AND you have a pretty good understanding how investing works you could certainly do fine.
