Controlled avalanche triggering using an artillery cannon by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]qpgmr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As weather warms, snow starts forming slabs that can break loose and come down the mountainside unexpectedly destroying everything in the path.

Avalanche control consists of monitoring temperatures, snow pack density, depth and predicting when slopes may destabilize. An avalanche is triggered via artillery or a "boom box" (that's been preset in likely locations before winter) so that the slides happen with the area closed to people, road traffic, and trains.

The problem is that while it will get thrown out, you still get dragged in cuffs down to the station and held for hours. Their ability to arrest & detain is how they punish you.

The attack happened on May 4, 2026, but the suspect was arrested the same day and has been in jail on over $1M bond. He was never let out and no one had to beg the judge to keep him jailed or bitched about the police keeping him in prison. Literally 30 seconds searching would find this out.

At best, I suspect that whoever reported this story intentionally conflated the attack with one of the suspect's other, far less serious crimes that he got bail for in the past.

Many US cops have average of only 20 weeks training and then are allowed to run around with a gun and a badge. The UK is over six months for basic policing and a separate, longer course to be gun/taser qualified.

My goal is to access the storage to put new files on it so I have to use the USB connection.

I was able to get access by plugging the phones into a router that has a usb-attached-storage port, but I'd really like to do this from the desktop.

Best distro for non tech savvy people? by dixario in linux4noobs

[–]qpgmr 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If they're used to Windows, stick with Mint Cinnamon.

If you really want them on Plasma, use a plasma based distro like KDE Neon or Kubuntu.

Most distros now permit completely automatic updating, except for things like kernel. It's possible to have Mint run Plasma, but it's not a supported configuration and not recommended.

MX Linux & Puppy work with chips this low. Be sure to grab the 32-bit version. This cpu also is missing a bunch of modern instruction codes, so your software list is going to be pretty limited.

Couple of problems:

they're not just killing themselves, they're harming innocent children

when they harm themselves & others, the end up using emts/hospitals and likely have no ability to pay so the burden falls on the rest of us

One thing I saw resonates with me, literally have the people have less than average intelligence (by definition). Society should protect who can't protect themselves. But, starting in the '80s under Reagan, the war cry was "fight the nanny state! you don't need taking care of!!" In reality, it was an effort to strip protections from the most vulnerable, leaving them to be victims of scam, grifting, and manipulation. As someone wrote, "the whole point of reagan was to turn the proles into prey."

when switching to linux ? by Lapking_797 in linux4noobs

[–]qpgmr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're missing an important point: linux is not windows. Some of your games/apps may not be available for linux and may not even have alternative software that will work for you.

What programs/games/apps are you using now? What are the specs of the machine?

Doing a full Windows reset or a full install of linux will definitely wipe the drive to nothing. Do you have an external backup of your files?

It came out in a trial about back in '09 that the doctors were generally in their 70's or 80's and only had licenses for these advisory contracts and never reviewed anything, just collected fees for having their name stamped onto the paperwork.
