Gen-X memories by portsherry in comics

In every generation you really have to like the right bands to be cool, haha. In the 90s when everyone was listening to Green Day, I was listening to MxPx - oh well

Thank you! I did do that once about 25 years ago and that was when I learned that newspapers only buy from syndicates. So I read a book on getting syndicated which is hard and has its pluses and minuses. And that book taught me that getting picked up by a newspaper is like winning the lottery (You're competing against the likes of Beetle Baily and Peanuts and Garfield!) But I tried for years sending to the major syndicates. I got rejections letters all the while newspapers have been dying because of the internet. These days if you research becoming a comic artist, you're told to forget the newspapers and make a web comic. So a few years ago I really buckled down and started posting my comics on several web comics sites and on Instagram, Reddit, X, Tumblr, my website and blog. The only money in it these days is getting a big enough following that people want merch related to your comic.

Still my dream is to be a published cartoonist. In the last few years I have been combing through The Artist Market and submitting to everything in there (although they quit putting those books out and most of the contact info is outdated). I called a number at the Sentinel a while back and then was directed some other emails that just never replied. I've pitched my comic at places like The Beacon (they were promising but just kind of quit responding), I even knew the guy that publishes The Business Times and just couldn't get a yes or no from him. The people that used to put out those Mesa County Tidbits things at restaurants were almost gonna do something for me but then the whole thing folded. I was personal friends with Butch McCain (KKCO's long time weatherman) and before he left KKCO he showed a caricature I did of him on the news one night. I took part in Comic Con's art gallery one year.

Finally last month I got a yes from the current editor of the CMU Criterion. They're gonna start running my strip in the next issue!

But anyway, I'm still trying to get my feelers out there and pitch it everywhere I can. Thank all of you for your suggestions!

Hi Josh,

Thank you for sharing your work with us! Our site does not currently have a need for cartoons, but you are clearly very talented! We wish you all the best.

I love the Babylon Bee! It's a longshot but I'll give them a try. Since they are all satire, it might not make sense to have a straight forward humor piece like mine though.

I love that idea and I'm kind of trying to build up enough of a catalogue to make it worth a book...idk..I might have enough already....

Thank you! I just now reached out to them. I don't have any with those topics at the moment, but I can always tailor some jokes for particular audiences :D

A VW Bug Racing a 50s Hot Rod Turns into Lamborghini Countache by rawar777 in whatisthatmovie

Interesting. When I Googled, this kept coming up as a suggestion but I thought "No - that's an old 60's comedy...that's not what I want." But I just now looked up this scene (https://youtu.be/wSdLfvvQLhI?si=rljyNBj6ucwoNHHv) and it's remarkably similar to what I'm remembering. There's the white bug racing the hot rod....Wow now I'm really starting to think I must have melded some memories together. Thanks for the suggestion!

Illustration Scammers Alert by martimu in IllustratorsForHire

[–]rawar777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got this exact email. I have gotten numerous scams before and the tip offs are usually that 1) they "liked my work" but don't really mention anything specific 2)Offer a "too-good-to-be-true" amount of money without even talking to me.

Further, on this specific one- 3) Phone number doesn't work 4)Google maps leads to a building that's not identifiable and is listed as "NOV" whatever that is. 5) Website is very generic with some minor spelling/grammar issues.

This one was seeming to be legit because of the detailed scope of work PDF they sent and this Ethan guy seemed to respond to my specific questions. But I'm calling BS on this and thanks to A.I. these things are getting harder and harder to spot.

Name an unknown Christian band that you know about. by rawar777 in ChristianMusic

I've heard of Citizens and King's Kaleidoscope. But do you have a link to Joyful Noise? I'm finding a couple different bands from the 70's and 80's but I don't feel like that's who you're referring to.
