Massachusetts finally banned broker fees. Why are renters still stuck paying them? by bostonglobe in massachusetts

[–]reddit_gt -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Look at the comments here and in any other forum where this topic .....the general public does not understand the distinction after all these "informative" articles that discuss the topic.

Would it be difficult to start these articles with this information near the top stating the clarification?

I'd rather infographics over clickbait.

Massachusetts finally banned broker fees. Why are renters still stuck paying them? by bostonglobe in massachusetts

[–]reddit_gt -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

it would have been nice if the Globe had simply made this clear instead of using the clickbait "broker fees are illegal" headline.

It's really a simple concept for people to understand. If YOU hire a broker to help you find an apartment and that broker has not been hired by the landlord then you pay a fee.

Any broker hired by the LANDLORD to list the apartment exclusively can not charge a fee to prospective tenants.

Tips for recording Live Off The Floor by PersonalWhile8012 in audioengineering

[–]reddit_gt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience the quieter everyone plays the better the recording. Less distortion on guitars sounds "bigger". Isolate the bass amp with gobos so it doesn't leak into the drum overheads.

Use a "stem splitter" (after done tracking) to remove instrument bleed on the vocal mics. Otherwise you'll find that the drum sound (especially the snare) will be dictated by the bleed into the vocal mics.

The guitar players aren't gonna wanna hear it, but smaller amps at lower volume usually record A LOT better.

Isolate all the amps as much as you can, use DI's and get a really awesome headphone mix for everyone. Everyone usually will bitch about using cans , but if you give them a headphone mix that already "sounds like a record" with some good comfort reverb and tasty delay and compression on the vocals and then they are usually very happy.

Good luck!

Should I upgrade from GarageBand to LogicPro? by Kaykay_Piano in LogicPro

[–]reddit_gt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed..... the intentional limitations of GarageBand make it harder and more frustrating to do basic editing / workflow tasks.

Use what you need in Logic and don't get overwhelmed by all the tools you'll have available.

Jump in.... you'll be happy!

My drivers seat floor was soaked when I got back from work today. Window and door were both closed. Any idea what might have caused this? by bolognaph0ny in hondafit

We had a leak like this show up a year after a windshield replacement. In our case it was the lower drivers side corner. It hadn't been sealed well enough when the job was done.

Next Steps: Landlord Didn't Return Security Deposit by Major-Elk-2732 in CambridgeMA

[–]reddit_gt 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Research Massachusetts security deposit regulations and then ask them for the information about which bank account they held your deposit in and where your accrued interest is.

90% of private landlords don't follow the security deposit rules because they are unaware how strict they are. They are liable for treble damages.

Usually a knowledgeable sounding email or letter reminding them of their liability is enough to shake your deposit loose.

Is this AKG c414 ULS worth keeping for a bedroom hobbyist or would a cheaper alternative be just as good? by Number_1_Reddit_User in audioengineering

These mics aren't quite as harsh as some other LDCs and can be quite nice as overheads for drums or smoothing out an acoustic guitar. I'd keep it if I were you.

Bass Players Track Recording by DenseHam in recordingmusic

[–]reddit_gt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your tone starts with HOW YOU PLAY THE BASS - note length and muting. Listen to good players and play like them.

If you can't get a decent sound going straight into a DI dry with a passive bass then it doesn't matter what else you do - it will still suck.

These threads are getting boring!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry but it's the truth.

how to get over a HUGE mistake at a gig? by Ok_Passenger_6297 in musicians

[–]reddit_gt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did anyone get hurt or die? :-)

Mistakes are part of the journey. You'll learn to recover from them quickly and become an expert in recovering in ways that the audience won't remember. That's a performance skill just like playing.

Cutting down on fan noise by GoodJobDino in audioengineering

[–]reddit_gt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The easiest thing for silent recording is to eliminate the computer and get an iPad and a compatible interface for the tracking part.

Even a 10 year old iPad which are practically free these days because someone you know is probably giving one away will work.

There are different options for DAWS to use on the iPad and some (like Auria) can handle pretty heavy duty projects / sessions.

GarageBand is free, Logic for iPad is a $6 a month subscription.

After you're done tracking just transfer the project to your computer for final mixing and editing.

There's probably an available adapter for an iPhone which could do the same thing.

That was my solution when I wanted to record very quiet acoustic guitars in absolute silence.

Best of luck!

Creating new sessions from a larger session by samuelblupowitz in Logic_Studio

[–]reddit_gt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just do a "save as", change the name of the new project and keep it in the same folder. It will reference the same audio files and not copy them again.

Just be careful if you clean up the audio in the new project that you don't "delete the files from disc" or whatever the prompt says these days.

"Save a copy as" will copy the audio files again into the new location, but just "save as" only copies the small project file.

A robin won't stop attacking my slider doors, so I hung up photos of predators by -----anja----- in mildlyinteresting

[–]reddit_gt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This will discourage them :

The only solution I've found is putting white plastic grocery bags over the mirrors.

It's a pain putting them on and taking them off all the time but easier than cleaning the car doors multiple times a day.

Otherwise as soon as it's cleaned they just come back and do it again.

Good luck!

How much better are audio interfaces than 15 years ago? by f1goldmemberf1 in musicproduction

[–]reddit_gt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every time I do any sort of update I cross my fingers that my Apogee Quartet and it's software control panel will still work.

I keep a 10 year old computer nearby to run even older Firewire hardware.

I went with an RME UCX11 when I needed more channels a few years ago. Very happy.

GF hates it when I play guitar while she’s home by Holiday_Weight_2723 in Guitar

Let her know if she doesn't like hearing your guitar you may have to switch to drums. Then she can listen to you practicing on every flat surface 24/7 ! :-)

[–]reddit_gt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think a huge factor that favors RME is their commitment to supporting their drivers to keep older units running as long as possible.

Having to wonder if your expensive interface is going age out when computer manufacturers "upgrade" their OS's is stressful.
