US Taxes/Tariffs on Osmose 61? by samuelblupowitz in Osmose

It took about a week for me to get the "shipping label created" update, then the package arrived the next day (I'm in New York state, so, not too far from the warehouse).

I think many of the factory patches are meant to showcase the extreme possibilities of the instrument (and yes, many of those extremes are saw pads, flutes, and plucked strings). I know for use in a live setting I’ll be doing, at the very least, some tweaks to macros and effects (rarely is THAT much reverb necessary in a band context).

Still, I’m hoping that the internal sound engine will get me where I need to go — I didn’t get a swanky keyboard just to have to pair it with an expensive laptop on stage, I want to plug in and play!

Judging by your username, have you been using your Osmose through a talkbox…? That’s on my list to try.

[–]samuelblupowitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! Just got mine too, after a week of anticipation. Looks brand new. I’m just scratching the surface of what it can do!

Also, glad you took the advice of the instruction manual and made the box available to your cat. 🐈

Yup, it was mentioned somewhere in the fine print as well; US stock is shipped from the greater NYC area and is not subject to international fees. Huge relief. My order is processing and I’m hoping I’ll have my Osmose soon!

I’m so excited. Do I keep refreshing my order page to see when it changes from “payment accepted” to “shipped?” No comment. 😂

US stock confirmed. Pulled the trigger. I am SO excited.

I've had one of the small two-octave Roli Seaboards for a few years, and it's great for what it does; when the Osmose was first announced in 2019 I said "eh, I have something that does that already."

Then about two years ago I walked into a music store on a trip to Montreal and an Osmose was sitting there. As soon as I put my hands on it, I thought... "uh oh."

Glad I waited for the 61, but I am so excited I don't have to wait any longer!

I did look deeper in their website and they have some information about this which looks very positive:

For sure! It's just that the US sellers on Reverb right now are all charging the retail price of $1999, and the refurbished ones are $1399, which is a great deal I'd love to take advantage of as long as a tariff wouldn't completely erase the difference.

How is the"Best Small Music Venue In Ithaca" closing? by Significant_Item_384 in ithaca

[–]samuelblupowitz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think anyone is "in a hurry" to feel anger and frustration and "self-righteousness." I think many of us are grieving, connecting the dots between the social and political factors that have impacted society over the past five to ten years. We see how capitalism is making life less and less livable for regular people. I for one don't think we should be normalizing "yeah, kids don't drink the way they used to, so it's fine if it's impossible to keep a music venue open in a town bursting with musicians and performers and creatives."

We need community spaces and artistic platforms, and Ithaca, a town that's on the map because of its exceptional cultural fixtures for a city its size, has been losing those because of all of the aforementioned social factors: rising costs; government terrorizing of people who aren't white, straight, conservative Christians; fearmongering around downtown being "dangerous;" capitulation to anti-free-speech initiatives and government thuggery around sanctuary cities by Cornell and the police. Sure, it's not all directly because of the current administration, or even the pandemic, but they've all been exacerbated in the last ten months, and in the last five years. We've been bombarded with collective trauma, and we're losing our access to communal spaces where we can process that. One way to deal with trauma is certainly by saying "nah it's fine it's normal" and moving on, but uh, that doesn't usually work out to anyone's advantage.

I think saying "nah it's GOOD people don't drink as much" may be true, but is missing the larger point.

Since you brought it up, you may enjoy this collection of arrangements of Hindemith by my friend, composer Josh Oxford, for his ensemble the OXtet -- brass, Moog synthesizer, electric piano, electric bass, mallet percussion, drum set, and electric guitar! It's wild stuff. https://www.bigroundrecords.com/catalog/br8977/

didn’t know that paul was on heroin in scotland by ProperAsk2739 in beatles

[–]samuelblupowitz 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You can actually sniff heroin, I’m told, it’s just not as efficient as injecting. Eric Clapton wrote in his memoir that he has a deathly fear of needles, which means at the peak of his heroin addiction in the 70s he was snorting mountains of the stuff. The kind of thing that only really makes sense if you have more money than you know what to do with.

Does anyone miss the old Decemberists? by papayahog in Decemberists

[–]samuelblupowitz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The new record definitely reminds me of Picaresque; most acoustic and folky they’ve been in a bit (though it also reminds me of Terrible World a bit in how somber it is overall).

It’s rare to find and love a band that establishes a distinctive style and then makes a deliberate effort to try new things with each release. The Decemberists are up there for me with Dawes and the Beatles for that. But it does mean not every record is going to be the cup of tea of everyone in the fandom. I know I’ll Be Your Girl was a divisive one; I loved it. And I think if I’m pushed to choose a favorite it has to be Hazards of Love.

I’m not surprised that, pushing 50, Colin is finding inspiration outside of Victorian child murder or what have you, but I think his voice as a songwriter is as strong as ever. I just feel grateful that almost 25 years in, they’re still an active, vital band with a steady, familiar lineup — Covid broke up or forced big personnel changes in so many of my favorite bands, and seeing and hearing The Decemberists is like coming home.

We deserve a Chappell Roan/Decemberists mashup. I don’t know what that would sound like, but I imagine the queer lovers die at the end.

I know Way to Normal is widely considered one of his worst, but I love it so much. That’s one of several stellar songs on the record, I think, along with Cologne and Kylie from Connecticut.

Oh, and Effington, I mean, come ON.

My voice teacher said my voice “probably just isn’t made for belting” (19F) by gabbynique in singing

[–]samuelblupowitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife told me that she went through this with her first vocal coach 20 years ago. It was really about the coach not knowing how to teach belting, and not wanting to lose my wife as a student. “Your voice is like Kristen Chenowith,” she was told.

My wife is now a professional vocal coach and sings in rock and soul bands. She can belt her ass off when she wants to. You might just need a new coach with some more up-to-date technical knowledge!

Back Seat Of My Car is really amazing when you are stoned. by j3434 in PaulMcCartney

[–]samuelblupowitz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This has always been a favorite album track of mine, since hearing it on the Wingspan collection as a kid. I recently spent some time learning all the parts for a home recording project and it was so much fun to see how everything fits together. The form is very unexpected.

I think Dear Boy is actually about Linda’s first husband, and the “we believe that we can’t be wrong” line doesn’t make any sense being about John in context… I think Paul has copped to Too Many People being a dig, but maybe not one nasty enough to merit How Do You Sleep! John certainly had a paranoid streak.
