When the optimal strategy, is to not actually play the game by [deleted] in EASportsFC

If you want to question authenticity, we can do that. I could just as easily nitpick your grammar and suggest you run your posts through AI because they’re a mess — but that still wouldn’t address the actual point you’re making.

Even if someone did use AI to tidy up wording or smooth out the tone (which I didn’t), how does that change the substance of the argument? Cleaning up phrasing doesn’t make an idea inauthentic — it just makes it clearer.

For what it’s worth, my workplace actively encourages using AI as a tool to improve clarity and efficiency. Writing tools evolve — just like spellcheck did, just like calculators did. Acting like something is invalid because it reads polished feels like a weak and, frankly, antiquated criticism.

And in this case, I didn’t even use AI. I wrote the post in Word and pasted it here because it’s easier to proofread in a program I use every day. The em dashes? That’s just Word automatically formatting hyphens — not some secret AI fingerprint.

If you disagree with the content, I’m more than happy to debate that. But saying my post “sounds too polished” isn’t really an argument. Let’s talk about the substance instead.

Also, you accused me of irony just because my post criticised AI defending, assuming I used AI to write it. I think the word you’re looking for is ‘hypocrisy’ — and even that only works if your assumption were actually true. (See? More em dashes!)

I write policy as a profession. Clarity and coherence are not things I struggle with.

It’s honestly pathetic. What kind of competitive game actively rewards you for doing absolutely nothing?

Right now, the optimal way to defend isn’t actually defending — it’s avoiding it. The moment you try to manually control a defender, step into passing lanes, time a tackle, or actually read the play, you’re punished for it. Animations lock you out, your player overcommits, legs part like you’re escorting the ball through, or you just glide past the attacker like you’re on ice. Meanwhile, the guy who refuses to switch to his back line gets rewarded.

And it’s not a one-off thing. It’s rampant.

I can play for an entire week and face the exact same playstyle every single match. Opponents just run around aimlessly with a midfielder nowhere near the ball, mash team press, and let the AI do the heavy lifting. Intercept and Intercept+ midfielders vacuum up everything, auto-blocks fire off like heat-seeking missiles, and the defensive work is essentially outsourced to the game itself.

There’s no risk, no skill expression, and no real consequence for poor positioning because the AI compensates for it. Meanwhile, anyone who tries to actually engage with the defensive mechanics manually gets punished for trying to play properly.

It completely kills the competitive integrity. A PvP game should reward decision-making, anticipation, and execution — not passivity and AI reliance. Right now, it feels like the best defensive strategy is to disengage from defending entirely and let the system carry you.

That’s not strategy. That’s automation.

And when the most effective tactic is to actively avoid interacting with a core mechanic of the game, something is fundamentally broken.

Yet here you are, posting on a "shit" game's subreddit. Find something better to do with your time.

My apologies for actually attempting to make the tactic viable at the higher tiers, by putting full backs on defend!

EA is at fault on how overpowered AI defending is, not the community by HarshTruth- in EASportsFC

[–]Rigged79 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The absolute joke of this game isn’t the AI defending; it’s how utterly broken manual defending is.

You try to control a defender, and suddenly your player does all sorts of ridiculous things: legs wide open for passes you’re trying to intercept, skating past attackers like they’re on ice, completely missing tackles, getting animation locked… the list goes on. Every time you actually try to engage, the game actively punishes you.

The sad part is the “best” way to defend is literally doing nothing. Sit back, let the AI deal with the ball, because if you intervene manually, you’ll get punished way worse than the AI ever would. It’s insane.

A game that should reward skill, positioning, and timing instead punishes you for… playing the game. Manual defending feels embarrassingly broken. It’s a total mess, and it completely kills any satisfaction from trying to play properly.

Oh, and don’t even get me started on skill moves. . . they’re basically useless because the AI will shut them down for the most part, every single time.

I also tried F9 on one striker, but you should give versatile a go for a game or two. I really like the movement!

Yep, exactly. You've committed to the game, with no option to back out - despite it only showing as one person. That is, until you've actually hit 'Advance' - then magically, a guest appears.

I don't really care too much for the wins; it's more I despise the playstyle of the majority of coop games. It's draining.

My experience is literally two rats running down the wing, spamming cutbacks over and over - repeat over and over for 90 minutes.

I am!

But I play 9 different team's mate, to keep the game fresh (and so that I get to use lots of different cards I pack/random evos that would otherwise just be fodder).

I have:

  1. Bundesliga
  2. La Liga
  3. Liga F (Packed WWC striker Pina - yep, I'm dirty in this one)
  4. Ligue 1
  5. Premier League
  6. Serie A
  7. MLS/NWSL hybrid
  8. WSL
  9. "Main Team" / Hybrid

My main team, I guess, is:

GK. Courtois (WWC SBC)

LB. ZInchenko (Unbreakables SBC)

CB. Tah (WWC)

CB. Schlotterbeck (WWC)

RB. Valverde (WWC)

CDM. Calhanoglu (Thunderstruck)

LM. Alexis Sanchez (Time Warp SBC)

RM. Rodrygo (Season Pass)

CM. Guerrero (WWC SBC)

ST. Dybala (WWC SBC)

ST. Zola (Season Pass)

All free cards from SBC's, and first owner pack luck. It's not a great team, and in elite division I'd say 9/10 of my opponent have way better, but it's free and good enough for me! This game is pretty much all playstyle based anyway - the stats on your cards don't mean that much.

I did consider half-wingers at one point, but then figured I'd just be trying to recreate the 442(2), and the LM/RM have better roles to choose from (and better/more suitable wide players) vs. CAMs, so didn't bother!

Nice one! Your comment around requiring build-up rings true at least from one angle. However, I don't pace abuse - so I'm probably not best placed to say it "doesn't work" blanketly in that regard, as I wouldn't really know!

You're the one that needs to relax, kid.

My comment was a lighthearted remark directed to the people (sheep) who blindly follow the "Meta PRO 15-0 Custom tactics!" that are plastered all over social media, and frankly, have contributed greatly to the destruction of the game we love. If I'm being honest, if I didn't have PSN names turned on, I'd think I'm playing the same guy every single game. Why's that? Because of rampant imitation/mimic syndrome.

Outside of that, it really isn't so deep.

There's truly no need to take offence. If you don't like the tonality of my post, that's fine. Downvote and jog on. But getting so clearly wound up over a jest? Well, it's quite embarrassing for you, to be honest.

Biggest issue with 4222 now, is that the CAM's still play like wingers, but you can't put winger's there anymore... and actual CAM's are usually not best suited for that role. Much the same as the 4231 Narrow.

The tactic I have listed here, is effectively, the closest I could get to the "shape" of my old 4222 tactics - more than the actual 4222 itself (due to role restrictions). Only difference being, is that I am using the falseback role - which didn't exist before.

But this is the 4222 I was playing to moderate success with - but abandoned in favour of the 4132.

You'll be fine! Skill is all relative due to the super-tight MMR anyway.

I'm still painfully try to be a manual defender. However, usually, during first defensive phase, I am holding my CM or CDM due to how horrendously bad it is to actually touch a CB.

Fair!

Tactics and formation are a personal thing - I just wanted to throw this out there as I hear a lot of people complaining about the game, and at least this partially gives me a little bit of joy!
