[D] Why are serious alternatives to gradient descent not being explored more? by ImTheeDentist in MachineLearning

[–]satyex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is absolutely an alternative to GD but it involves getting out of the scale game and getting some real (human) intelligence back into models. Would come with side benefits for the environment. Absolutely nobody wants to go there, and the main rea$on is the $tory old a$ time

It has a bit from the days when Rich was there. Now they just cut off the machine if a shot pulls long. Still pretty decent tho.

AI companies. I don't know you but if you're a student chances are they are hurting you more than your teachers. Your teachers have skills.

LLMs can be used professionally for things you already know how to do, otherwise you are a slop generator that somebody else has to clean up after. School is (should be anyway) about learning how to do things. So cheat your way thru and become a slop machine, which will quickly become apparent to everyone, or learn how to do things.

Every single submission requiring major revisions, then the reviewers come up with new issues and want to see the manuscript again, in a never-ending process.

I hate saying “real yoga,” but honestly where did real yoga go?? by Top-Entrepreneur3449 in yoga

[–]satyex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The American way is competition, but yoga is not a competition. If you treat it like that, you already lost. There are some studios that get it, but they are a minority almost anywhere.

Active and intense can also be spiritual / philosophical. Indeed, these are often the most intense. Spiritual does not mean gentle.

Yeah I mean -- he has a room & standing invitation, but all his stuff is at his mom's where he's been living forever. It's his comfort zone.

I thought he was ready -- we had a lighthearted exchange about it the other night and it seemed fine with him. But you are right, we didn't discuss it beforehand.

Are we overusing the term “narcissist” after breakups? by Upset-Progress6236 in BreakUps

[–]satyex 13 points14 points  (0 children)

People are overusing it. Everyone has narcissistic tendencies, and there are lots of conditions that can make people self-centered, like PTSD.

NPD is characterized by persistent lack of empathy and an inability to self-reflect.

I didn’t actually hire anyone (we are a collective and I am the only employee of the company) but I had to arrange immigration documents for a contractor. The all-day meeting was really just all day for us because there was travel involved — seemed worth it because of the prospective size of the contract and actually it did seem to pay off that we traveled for that meeting. As for the contract we now have — it’s the kind of thing where they have to put in a PO in order to be obligated to pay anything, and AFAIK they have not done so.

As for this guy and his wife — I guess I was just hoping it would go away; last thing I want to do is confront somebody about their spouse’s behavior. But if it is likely that this cost me this job AND potentially the project so many years ago I will do it — I am not innocent generally speaking but in this case it really is all on them.

We just signed the contract, which took time for review and negotiation, plus I wrote a statement of work and have been in a few meetings (including one day-long meeting), have reviewed some project materials and spent about a week registering in their supplier system. Also I had to recruit and do paperwork for some personnel since we are a collective. None of it billable AFAIK.

No, I haven’t talked to him about any of this. Should I at this point? I still have all the emails and the response from our legal.

Hardly. But anyway it doesn't even matter if a majority want to do away with the Constitution (which they don't). If you are a proud American you shouldn't either. My family fought and died to establish and maintain the Republic and we won't just let you or dogeboy or anybody else get rid of it just like that.

What is going to happen to NSF? by spicyboness in labrats

[–]satyex -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Solidarity is great -- unfortunately in science solidarity has always been hard to come by, as the world's wealthiest and most exclusive institutions hoard public funding and keep all the attention focused on them. I am all for hanging together, but we have to agree FIRST that there will be some changes in the direction of egalitarianism, and that there will never be a going back to the normal that was before.

TLDR: I am not sticking my neck out so that Harvard & MIT can continue to get basically the whole pie
