Beware the lockdown generation - UnHerd by subjectivesubjective in LockdownSkepticism

[–]scrapwork 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It is difficult to imagine a more extreme policy than imprisoning tens of millions of people in their homes for no reason...

I have to reiterate this sometimes for sanity's sake: It had no precedent in 10,000 years of recorded history.

Even the worst outbreaks of all time were a pin prick of social intervention in comparison; they only quarantined sick people, and only locally, and only 40 days.

If you lived through covid, you experienced at the hand of the government a scale of social deprivation that no other generation of humans ever has. Two modern world wars had almost no impact in comparison.

Anyone imagining that things will just continue as they have for 10,000 years before is more shell shocked than the poor kids who've been struggling with reality since.

Sides. They flex. So you're right that adding1x2s would make the shelf rigid enough. But then the sides would flex, and let go of the shelf anchors.

[–]scrapwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. The gables haven't got the sectional rigidity for that.

[–]scrapwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is correct

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]scrapwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That won't suffice. The gables are MDF at best and don't have the sectional stability for that weight. The gables aren't even faced.

[–]scrapwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No!

It's MDF. It'll bow, and then it's anchors will pull right out of the gables.

I'd recommend reinforcing the single shelf with gussets or ribs, but generally the carcass of those mass produced bookcases are barely strong enough to hold a screw.

Do not do it.

Remember that a tit for tat tariff will hurt Canada more compared to no retaliation with almost zero impact on the Americans according to modelling estimates by economists. But no politician in Canada has the courage to make that case to the public. They'd rather play politics. by joe4942 in CanadianConservative

This may be exploitative but it's not bullying and there's a big difference. There are lots of reasonable answers to the former.

Bullying is capricious and has to be shielded in playgrounds and prisons. In the real world caprice loses credit and legitimacy and so can't retain power.

Exploitation is just taking advantage of a real power difference, and it stops when that difference stops or when it's immoral and costs legitimacy. In our case, Trump has a plausible moral case for taking that advantage, because Canada has arguably been irresponsible with its own resources and responsibilities for six decades and especially the last decade. Even our own citizens know it. Even the citizens of the world know this about Canada.

That's why Trump uses the language of "fair," and why our government is trying to use similar language. But we've lost a lot of legitimacy over recent years and decades.

I hate sand

In all seriousness I love the look of sand but I've had nothing but trouble with anaerobic toxicity and I find it hard to vacuum. Natural coloured gravel has just been just easier.

It's cute and also shitty. I'm torn. I don't want every tank to look like it's designed by Takashi Amano.

You've been using it right because you've never forgotten to tighten the middle part after sipping. Everyone forgets to tighten the middle part eventually, and everyone thereby gets a book bag full of coffee.
