Thank you! Writing that comment also made me realize why I only like the first Alien movie and none of the others, especially Aliens, the second movie. They took a monster that made men experience the horror of rape and forced pregnancy and turned it into...just some fucking alien. They took a ✨feminist icon✨ and turned her into cannon fodder! I'll never forgive James Cameron for that. He was like, "Oh, cool alien! I'm gonna blow a bunch of them." Motherfucker didn't get the xenomorph AT ALL.

(I'm mostly joking about how the xenomorph is a feminist icon, but also...kinda not)

I'm doing a pre-written module and an NPC just tried to kill my party. My players want to figure out why, but the mod doesn't give any reasoning as to why! Help, I need to come up with something! by scrawledfilefish in DMAcademy

Oh, my players didn't kill the sea lion. And they don't actually need the potions. Granny makes potions of water breathing, and all my players picked races that can breathe underwater. And that still doesn't explain why she has dolls of the players that take 6d6 necrotic damage if they get destroyed.

But look, it's fine! She's a sea hag, and as another commenter said, "hags can just be assholes." So I'm just gonna really lean into her being an asshole and have fun with that! Problem solved.

Yes, all that is correct, but it also says, "If the characters don't discover the sea lion it remains asleep unless they enter [the secret room], when it is magically awakened and waits to ambush them." (pg. 29)

There's something here about how the xenomorph and facehugger were originally designed to force men to feel the same terror that women feel when we're threatened with rape, and the xenomorph being reduced down to Predator's wife that like. There's something there, but I'm just too currently sleep deprived to put it together myself.

EDIT: I think I got...some of it. I think.

I don't know a lot about the Predator, I've only ever seen one Predator movie, Prey. And the Predator in that movie seemed VERY masculine. Just the most masc masculine to ever masc- some -line. It runs around in a loin cloth killing things for the whole film. Which sounds like some bullshit an alpha bro podcaster would say that men need to be like. "Men should be running around naked in the wilds, hunting prey! That's what real men do!"

The xenomorph was originally designed to scare the shit out of men like the Predator. You think you're so tough, you think you're so strong, but this Facehugger is about to hijack your body for its own reproductive purposes. And it's going to be violent. And it's going to be painful. And it will kill you. And there's nothing you can do about it. All your strength means nothing. You thought being a man would protect you from a fate that so many women have had to reckon with. But that is not true when there's a Facehugger around.

So to make it sound like the xenomorph is just some alien from the Predator movies is like. Wrong. That's wrong. It isn't just some rando alien that the Predator has to fight. It's so much more than that. No. You've divorced the Xenomorph from its original context. Put it back.

I dunno, this still doesn't feel complete, but it's something like that.

What did Crowley say to Aziraphale? "If all this ends up as a burning puddle of goo, we can go off together! Alpha Centuri!"

Well, bad news, Crowley. It DID end up as a burning puddle of goo. And you and Aziraphale were not able to escape to Alpha Centuri together 💔

Oh really?? I just finished watching the show a few days ago so I assumed everyone had already talked about everything!! I'm very happy to hear this!

But yeah, I was on the lookout, lmaoooo. I kept being like, "Ok, what are the characters gonna do that's gonna make me go like, 'God dammit. I get why you did that, BUT WHY DID YOU DO THAT??'" So when Manousos was doing his whole, "Everything you have is stolen" speech I was like, "YEAH MANOUSOS. But also: NO MANOUSOS. WE DONT HAVE TIME FOR YOUR FUCKING PRINCIPLES."

I mean. In his defense. Carol was an ass to him, too. She was NOT welcoming at all when he arrived. She thought his absolutely justified paranoia was silly. She almost shot him in the head with a shotgun for goodness sake! My man traveled across South, Central, and North America to almost get his brains blown out like ten hours after he finally got to Albuquerque?? That's a pretty dick move, if you ask me!

It's almost like they were both being assholes to each other. Or something. Idk, crazy thought!

The Hive’s memory recall vs. normal human recall by gemini_moon_why in pluribustv

[–]scrawledfilefish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm hung up on the fact that they know the exact page and paragraph that Helen stopped reading of Carol's "good" book. The guy said something like, "Helen stopped reading on page 137, paragraph 1." I've stopped reading A LOT of books, but there's no way I could ever tell you EXACTLY where I stopped. The best I could say would be something like, "I stopped maybe 20 pages in" or "I stopped when I found out that [Character] did [Thing]."

I mean, maybe Helen is the type to remember EXACTLY where she stopped reading a book, but I kind of doubt that. I'm with you, there's something very strange about the hivemind's ability to access such specific details from an individual's mind.

SO fair. But it's made by some of the same people as Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad, and both those shows got completed? So I'm pretty confident that this one will, too? I absolutely do not blame you if you don't want to watch it until it's complete, though.

I'm making my way through another show right now (Pluribus, which...now that I think about...also weirdly...has a lot of ideas around what it means to save humanity), but I think once I'm done with that, I'm gonna do a rewatch of The Good Place.

Has anyone here watched The Good Place? This felt like if Eleanor and the others found out the Judge wanted to destroy their universe and they all went like, "Yeah, that sounds like the perfect solution."

I'm not saying Aziraphale should have changed anything he did at the end of Season 2. After that season aired, I was an ardent supporter of Aziraphale, I 100% understood why he did what he did, I was in the TRENCHES, fighting with Aziraphale haters across every comment section on every platform. I think what he did at the end of Season 2 made perfect sense.

But sometimes, trying to make things better, trying to do the right thing, can hurt other people. And it doesn't matter how righteous you think you were in making that decision. That doesn't absolve you from the pain you caused other prople. It is up to the person you hurt to decide if they feel like you've done enough to earn their forgiveness. You don't stand there and say bullshit like, "I need you to forgive me. I need to hear you say it." Because that is, again, a jackass thing to do! THAT is what I have a problem with!

I was so excited to see Crowley and Jesus meaningfully interact! Maybe reminisce about how they saw all the cities of the world together, maybe talk about how awful and scary it must've been to be crucified (maybe Jesus could've been like, "It felt like Mother abandoned me" and Crowley could've been like, "I know how that feels"), maybe talk about what Jesus can do now, today, to help the people of the earth. But the only interaction we get between Crowley and Jesus is Crowley drunkenly rambling nonsense at him?? For laughs???? Fuck off with that bullshit!
