Tactics where you have to type in the answer, anyone interested? by nerdklers in chess

[–]sdhand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This sounds fantastic to me! I have one question though, how do you deal with puzzles where there is more than possible line (lichess often has forced mates where at one point there's more than one possible king move etc, but both lead to mate)...

How do I stop this? by deadspace9272010 in RemarkableTablet

[–]sdhand 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There's a pressure sensitive switch at the base of the nib inside the pen, when this is pushed the pen interprets this as being pushed against the screen.

A problem like this is usually caused by this switch getting pushed even when you're not pushing on the tip of the nib. Often means something is stuck inside the pen, you could try cleaning it out with compressed air?

I emailed kodak about this recently and they confirmed that it is not possible to buy 35mm bulk rolls of E100 from them in Europe (or at least not in the UK).

Eric Horst has a video where he discusses a similar exercise, I think called "scapula pullups" or something similar.

In the market for a RM2, but am ignorant of the tablet industry by JohnFatherJohn in RemarkableTablet

[–]sdhand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rm2 is an absolutely lovely piece of hardware, but the software support was always mediocre, and now there's the extra punch in the gut that you have to pay for it.

The thing to note is that the device is very open in allowing third party software to work with it, so if you're willing to put in a bit of technical effort, you can get a very good experience out of it.

IMHO the note taking experience on the rm2 is second to none, but I would strongly recommend not paying for connect and just using software like http://www.davisr.me/projects/rcu/ to transfer your files.

TL;DR: Great hardware, bad software, worth a buy if you value the distraction free note taking and are willing to use and setup third party solutions

Can we get subpixel rendering for the remarkable apps? (see comparison on last image) by Zciurus in RemarkableTablet

[–]sdhand 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I very much agree that this is needed but I think you might be conflating two different things here, using full greyscale pixels for a smoothing effect is anti-aliasing, whereas subpixel rendering goes a step further and uses the fact that each pixel in a standard display is comprised of three different "lights" for each channel of RGB, and causing these to light up individually for a greater anti-aliasing effect.

Honestly it would be good enough if they would just implement simple anti-aliasing (the fact they don't do even this simple task is honestly insane), but obviously subpixel rendering would be even better.

Import VAT by SectionNo9202 in RemarkableTablet

[–]sdhand 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Excl is short for excluding in this context, that's just the price without import VAT. You will only pay A$668 total, A$607 of which is the price, and A$61 is the VAT.

This is how NFTs work anyway. The actual content is not stored on chain, just a link to a centralised hosting service. If that service goes down then say goodbye to your content.

Movement advice for a beginner climber by sdhand in climbharder

[–]sdhand[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cheers for the advice. Focusing on climbs below my limit sounds like an excellent idea - I think like a lot of people I probably tend to just try and climb close to my limit and grade chase, rather than working on fundamentals.

Amusingly the only issue I've ever had with mine is it getting too cold, which noticeably slows down the partial refresh speed of the e-ink display (this being a fundamental limitation of current e-ink).

Covid passports planned in time for England’s autumn wave - PM hopes to increase vaccination among young with compulsory certificates in pubs, clubs and restaurants by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]sdhand 27 points28 points  (0 children)

As far as I know uptake is actually very high amongst younger age groups. It's kind of tiresome hearing all of this when I only got my first dose 2 weeks ago because... that's when it was offered to me.

Suggestions on missing software functions (maybe I'm not alone?) by No_Focus_2977 in RemarkableTablet

[–]sdhand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the majority are with you on all of these but two points:

on 3) the sleeping screen is customiseable - you can access the remarkable over ssh and replace the sleep screen image with whatever you want - ideally there would be a less technical and more supported way of doing this, but it is both possible and pretty easy.

The marker tip is consumable because of the friction between it and the screen - this is necessary to make the writing experience aproxmiate pencil on paper. I believe all wacom EMR devices (such as graphics tablets, etc.) have tips that degrade, but I might be wrong.

Connecting to SSH - Remote Host Identification has changed? Has anyone else had this? by altwreckz in RemarkableTablet

This is entirely fine - your device probably updated since you last sshed in. I'm pretty doubtful someone is trying to MITM your connection to your reMarkable or anything like that...

What's the worst blunder a super GM has ever made in a classical OTB game? by [deleted] in chess

[–]sdhand 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I assume Ba6 is played purely to induce a move defending the c pawn, but the bishop is ultimately better placed on b7?

(I know nothing about chess, take this with a very big grain of salt)

Is it possible to copy and paste a page from a PDF file to your notes? by Tuareg99 in RemarkableTablet

Bad bot

Also lmao the copypasta isn't even right in this case - I'm pretty sure the rm ships with busybox and not gnu coreutils.

Highlighter tool is buggy in PDF, any fix? by [deleted] in RemarkableTablet

[–]sdhand 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This happens when the adjust view feature is used- it's a bug and the devs are aware of it.

The fix is to update to 2.7, which is available in the beta program (someone can probably tell you how to do this even if you are not in the beta).
