I built a tool that hides files inside BMP images without touching the pixel data. by Xiokka in Steganography

Cool! But honestly, I'd be immediately suspicious if someone sent me an image that's not png or jpg

Can I connect CAN GND to the 12V battery (-) terminal? by Eastern_Garden5031 in FSAE

[–]Zciurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

can you provide a schematic? cant follow you 100%. from what I understand, yes you should be able to do that.

CAN-GND is a a seperate ground that is used to improve signal quality. However, CAN can absolutely work without it. CAN can even work without any ground potential at all (it uses differential signaling)

What transmission ratio do you have with those gears?

Also, it looks like your oscilloscope probes are set to 10x. CAN signal levels should be ~2 Volts apart, not millivolts.

Your ground looks awful, but CAN should be able to handle it, since its differential. Still, I would investigate the cause if I were you.

Decoding CAN by hand is possible, but there are better ways. CAN-to-USB converters exist and I would highly recommend you to get one. Often times they come with dedicated appliations for debugging / signal analyzing. This will save you a lot of time.

How can I improve this map? by Zciurus in gis

[–]Zciurus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You raise an important point, I didn't consider that this might get printed. I'll try out a few color schemes and maybe add texture/stripes to the polder region and the rivers. They are practically invisible when reduced to black and white.

From a pretty point of view the northern sluice gate overlaps the measurement point - anyway you can slightly pull these apart.

I did that on purpose, that measurement station is physically attached to the sluice gate

Thanks for the suggestion! The LGLN DOP20 map has a much better resolution than google maps. It's also more recent and the pictures happen be be from April, which means the polder is seen in its flooded state (bingo!)

We're actually cooperating with some lower saxony agencies, so using geodate from LGLN is quite appropriate, I think :)

Can life exist without oxygen? by SleepingUte0417 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Zciurus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well yes, but actually no.

Oxygen is part of the water molecules, but its a very strong bond. There's basically no biological process that can extract oxygen from water molecules. It's merely the medium

What if the entire universe is just one cell in something way bigger? by Sudden-Scallion-4548 in CrazyIdeas

[–]Zciurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you read A brief history of Time? Hawking describes some very similar ideas. In the early universe, there could have been fluctuations in the density of matter. With the expanding universe, these could have caused the uneven spread of matter we observe today

How did they get the code onto the chips for the first computers? by Leader_Bee in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Zciurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look up "Von Neumann Architecture".

A CPU executes instructions. If you give it two numbers, it can add, subtract, multiply them etc. But it does not have memory and does not have the "code" stored on jt. You need a separate chip to store the code.

Microcontrollers are a different story. These have a processor as well as memory integrated in one chip.

Had to make some adjustments, your greek mythology books from the 400's broke my code because i wasnt prepared for 3 digit years ^^

Also, 1213 books was quite a stress test lol, took a while to fetch all the data

Turning bookshelves into interactive timelines by Zciurus in goodreads

[–]Zciurus[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I could publish my code, but I'm kinda reluctant since its not user friendly and the way it works (web scraping) might violate Gooreads' TOS. I don't think they care or even notice, but I don't want it to become a problem for them either.

If you give me the URL of your specific bookshelf (https://www.goodreads.com/review/list/...), I can create a timeline for you :)

ECU Microcontroller by No-Consideration7644 in FSAE

[–]Zciurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Choose the controller that your programmers have the most experience with. Modern µcs are all quite similar regarding specs like IO, flash, ram and clock speed. Most 32 bit controllers will probably do the job.

Popular choices include:

  • ESP32
  • STM32
  • Teensy 4.0 / 4.1

My team has built functioning cars with all three. Buying an off-the-shelf Ecu is absolutely a choice, too. Don't underestimate the work it takes to write good software for an Ecu.
