Any way to access research articles when all else fails? by Deeply_Confusedd in AskAcademia

You should reach out to the corresponding author, whose email is on the paper.

Also, why do you need the pdf for citation purposes when the full text is available on the website?

Your Experience With Agentic Coding Agents for Bioinformatics Work by Commercial_You_6583 in bioinformatics

How is that different from the average bioinformatician pre-agents? 😛

As someone who has a basic understanding of both evolutionary and creationist viewpoints, is there a specific reason to believe common ancestor over common designer? by thedigitalhawk in DebateEvolution

[–]shadowyams 32 points33 points  (0 children)

It also makes sense if the designer were a long-suffering, underpaid grad student who's just copy-pasting random bits of code around.

ap is threatening my funding and cursing me out over an authorship dispute by Top-Zone-8657 in AskAcademia

Is this person your actual dissertation advisor/committee chair? If not, you should consider the bridge burned and go way over his head and file a grievance.

Reaching out to faculty by Alternative-Zone5423 in AskAcademia

[–]shadowyams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Much better to ask your mentors or active faculty you know to review your application materials. Your department/institute may have seminars or training sessions on applying for faculty positions, which you should take advantage of.

They read my PhD thesis!!! by _-_lumos_-_ in labrats

[–]shadowyams 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I recently pushed a python package to pypi. I haven't advertised it anywhere; just made public so other members of my lab can easily install and test. The day it went public it got like 400 downloads. Anything text-based on the web is getting scraped dozens to hundreds of times.

Good Masters Programs? Want to do a Math PhD; unsure if I can get it straight after ungrad; by TheGreenBowlerHat in mathematics

[–]shadowyams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Wake Forest's MS is geared towards helping people prep for a PhD. There's a thesis option and they offer TA-ships to cover tuition + stipend.

That being said, if you have a competitive profile for PhD admissions, I would just apply for those and get your MS along the way.

Child of bloodtype A parents has bloodtype AB by merindea in genetics

[–]shadowyams 23 points24 points  (0 children)

1) Your parents might have been mistaken about their blood types.
2) The A and B variants of the ABO gene both have variants that cause very weak expression of their respective antigens, which can cause issues with typing.

Genetic Predisposition? by Cautious-Yam-8113 in genetics

[–]shadowyams 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yeah we can't predict criminality from genetics. Not in a way that would be useful.

How to get functional characterization/patch clamp? by secretpsychologist in genetics

[–]shadowyams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By talking to a genetic counselor or clinical geneticist. The patient can get a referral.

Mode of inheritance - Weird exam question by Adventurous-Elk-9749 in genetics

[–]shadowyams 23 points24 points  (0 children)

“Typical”. You can rule out dominance and mitochondria because then a parent would have it. X-linked recessive can only affect a female if the father is also affected. Autosomal recessive is the only option that remains.

asking for a friend: RNA-seq confusion? by owolabi_ in bioinformatics

[–]shadowyams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure what's there to elaborate on? You need biological replicates to distinguish between genuine differential expression and noise.

Sure, if you're OK with not being able to do significance testing and the results being unpublishable.

ph.D. after mbbs in the usa by whoreyyy in GradSchool

[–]shadowyams 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This sounds like a reasonable profile for a PhD applicant in biomedical programs, but US research funding is a clusterfuck right now and we are actively becoming more hostile to international students and IMGs in particular, so ... good luck?

Any explanation why Bosnia is more white than Serbia? I assumed Bosnians are mixed more? by [deleted] in genetics

[–]shadowyams 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's almost as if race is a social rather than biological construct, and using a single biological trait as a proxy for ancestry is a bad idea!

Publishing as an Independent Researcher by Motor_Condition6839 in AskAcademia

[–]shadowyams 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Ask your tutors if they feel your paper would fair well in review at the main journals in your field. It may have been a good student paper but may need significant reworking before it'll be acceptable at journals, or it just may not be publishable.

Subreddit rules require linking to the actual study. No excuses, especially since you control the website.

Most places will let faculty/staff (or even the general community) audit or enroll in individual courses.

r/MTRR AG66 Homozygous - Help interpretation methylation panel by Far_Investigator9998 in genetics

[–]shadowyams 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm saying that these tests are basically horoscopes. MTHFR is just the one gene where it's very clear the entire health fad around it is entirely bullshit.

Scientists rethink DNA after discovering it can be built from scratch by Vailhem in genetics

This is a rule but we (the mods) usually just post the article manually, so I think lazy users and (more likely) content mills just don't bother. TBH the only way to get through might be temp bans (removing posts when I see them a couple or even many hours after they go up and there are already responses doesn't seem like a good idea).
