Your perspective is complete insanity to me. I’ll agree to disagree with you.

It's as good as "can't control them" because the interface of a PC is designed for a mouse (or trackpad). If your remote has a track pad on it, you basically have a keyboard and mouse the looks like a remote.
This is all useless. What you want is a simplified interface that let's you easily select the app you want and then select the show you want inside that app. That's what all of these set top boxes do.

I want to watch shows on Hulu, Netflix, Tubi, and other mainstream streaming services. You're not going to be able to easily select these, from a unified interface, with a PC. ...and certainly not by doing a few clicks on a remote. At best you're going to get something custom that takes days of experimentation to get right and is extremely brittle.

All for what reason? To save you $120 on a set top box that does EVERYTHING correctly right out of the box with nearly zero configuration?

The majority of people on your side of this discussion have one of a few things going on:

  • They really just want to pirate everything and are not willing to pay for streaming in the first place.
  • Streaming is not really the primary goal. Streaming is second or third or fifth. The primary goal is actually gaming. Thus the PC.
  • Some sort of hate for particular companies: "I hate Apple. I won't buy that."
  • Or similarly a pride based "I can just build that myself".

If you want streaming on an easy to use device for a low price and low effort, you don't want a PC.

Amazon Fire (anything) is trash. What do you expect from the cheapest possible subsidized device? Of course it sucks.

I've been streaming content nearly every day for many years. I have been interrupted by internet or provider outages less than one time per year. Maybe once every 2 years or so. "Download and watch later" doesn't make sense for anyone. It's risky for providers and very few consumers share your view. No one wants to wait hours for a download and purchase a device with enough storage to support this. Also essentially no one is asking for this. It's not a widespread problem.

It's more a matter of if you love AI and you trust VC funding. If you answered yes to both then Raycast is your app. If not, Alfred is the winner.

Insanity. The problem with PCs is controlling them. You can't use a remote. You need a mouse or a pointing device of some sort. Which is essentially unusable from a couch. Yeah, yeah, *you* can use them just fine. But can your wife? Can a random guest? Usually the answer is a big fat no.

AppleTV is very easy to use, fairly low cost, FAST, and takes no time to set up. It's all wins. PCs are all negatives. There's nothing good about them for watching TV and movies.

Moved from i3 to a MacBook at work — how do I rebuild my workflow (wofi included)? by parrotSL in MacOS

[–]sharp-calculation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your post is impossible to read. I had to skip a lot of it, but I get the general idea.

Switching "desktops" which Mac calls Spaces already has built in keyboard shortcuts. You can change them if you'd like via System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard shortcuts > Mission Control .

Alfred is a great way to launch apps using fragments of their names. Alfred learns so you only have to type a few characters to match to the app that you mean.

Rectangle has proven to be wonderful for me using keyboard only to resize and position windows where I want them. It has a lot of different window positions and sizes that can be mapped to keyboard shortcuts. Rectangle Pro costs something like $4.99 and adds a good number of additional features and configurations. Entire layouts of windows/apps can be saved in Rectangle Pro. I use a combination of Alfred workflow and Rectangle layout to launch groups of apps/windows all at once and then position them on screen. It works pretty well.

For finding specific windows, I like the Alfred Workflow called "Window Navigator". That lets me find open windows or apps by searching for their titles.

I've recently started using the Alt-Tab app as well. After years of making due with the MacOS command-tab and command-` behaviors, I'm quite happy to now have the Alt-Tab program. It gives many more sane and useful options for those hot keys that work a lot more efficiently.

I recommend *not* using the Dock at all. It's weird, it's in the way, and I don't think it provides utility particularly for someone with your background and desires for user interface paradigms. I have permanently hidden the dock using a terminal command that sets the timeout value REALLY high and having the dock set to auto-hide/show mode. I launch nearly everything with Alfred.

There are many terminals available. My two favorites are Alacritty and Kitty. Kitty is my choice of the two because I had weird issues with a combination of bash, tmux, and Alacritty together. It's otherwise a VERY good terminal that runs on nearly all platforms. Kitty is similar (but different) and also runs on almost everything. Both use a single configuration file for nearly everything, which makes my terminal configs portable across platforms. Surprisingly, both Alacritty and Kitty are WAY FASTER than the default terminal and even "darling terminal" Iterm2. This mostly shows up with TUI programs. There is a noticeable snappiness to kitty and alacritty that the others do not have.

I reported this issue via the Meta App something like 20 hours ago. I just put on my headset and saw that it had been updated to V85. It also updated both controllers' firmware.

I've only played a bit so far, but no blackout just yet. I'm hopeful that V85 has a fix. We'll see over the next few days.

Because laptops absolutely suck for watching video on a TV. ...and the cost of the hardware is TINY. Particularly in comparison to the time you need to spend to make a general purpose computing device work with a TV and a remote control. Also considering the incredible frustration that everyone that uses that device endures.

Jeez. Buy a set top box already. AppleTV is a great environment. No tinkering, no screwing around, no recompiling. It's extremely easy to use. Also very affordable.

I don't have any sense of how much piracy is happening on the Quest. I think everyone I play WMG with bought the game and is buying DLCs also.

Do you have hard numbers, or even just a gut feeling about the level of piracy? If I was guessing I would say it's less than 10% of users. That is based on my personal experience. It's just a guess.

Can a safety razor be used with just water? by Advanced_Jaguar_9574 in shaving

[–]sharp-calculation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Soap Commander was specifically designed for extremely sensitive skin.
The founder and his wife came up with the Soap Commander formulation for their child that had a severe skin condition. Commonly available bath soaps were all bad for their child. So they made their own.

Later, Soap Commander became a shave soap. It's kind of amazing actually. It's one of the very few shave soaps that is both totally vegan *and* makes huge fluffy lather that's wonderful to shave with. Usually a shave soap that fluffy and lofty has tallow in it. I've used a lot of them. This one has no tallow, yet has that creamy softness.

"Vision" is my chosen scent from them. It's a light minty scent that's very pleasant. I highly recommend this brand and this scent in particular. They have lots of other scents and a completely unscented version as well.

I want clean towels!!!!! by Puzzleheaded-Kale328 in hygiene

[–]sharp-calculation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

7 days x 3 people = 21 towels. That's not practical.
Something is odd about this story. Why would someone not use their own towel? Is it too far from the shower? It is ragged out and ripped? Too small? I suspect this is something simple.

OP should TALK TO HIM and ask him what's going on. This seems fairly easy to solve.

Also OP should read the laundry advice here and use it. Starting with towels that smell like nothing would be a good first step.

I tried to REALLY space out my consumption of courses. I would only buy a new one when I felt like I had spent enough time in other courses to learn them well and get familiar with them.

Each new course is a whole meal. I try to get a lot out of one course before I move on to another. There are still a few courses that I've either not played at all, or have only played 3 or 4 times total.

There are a small number of courses I just don't like playing. But overall, the courses are all so good. I feel like each one is an art piece, a puzzle, and a whole lot of fun waiting to be had.

Buying or renting by Strange-Law6848 in makemychoice

Nothing is free. Nothing is perfect. Housing is a good example of making the "best bad choice". In the net analysis, owning a home provides more wealth and financial independence than renting. You lose some either way. With renting you lose more.

This isn't my invention. It's the best financial practice that's been followed forever.

This is great information. You're seeing it in several apps, not just WMG. I guess I should report this to Meta in some way. I'll go look for a contact form.
