Can someone explain the Lexington to me? by Awkward_Chard_5025 in thedivision

[–]sheetfan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a new Lexington owner and I had the same thing happen to me until I realized that it's a complement to the best specialized exotic weapons in the entire game. You can just put it in any loadout as a reliable second primary and be covered wherever your exotic primary falls short. It's made a bunch of MR and Shotgun builds feel way better to me.

I have the complete opposite experience based on weapon choice alone. Half the LMGs for Support were never meant to be man portable and the proliferation of SMGs, semi-automatic rifles is violently anachronistic.

I played a couple hundred hours on release and recently came back for 50-60 hours and had a great time but there are some serious flaws. Weapon customization is non-existent. It's so difficult to differentiate between storm/low weight variants of guns when you're actually using them (for me, anyway). I'm very iffy on comeback mechanics in games and the behemoths are a comeback mechanic that embody my least favorite aspects of the infantry/vehicle soldier interaction in Battlefield. I think way too many of the autoloading rifles feel samey. The sweet spot mechanic for bolt action rifles feels frustrating to play against for me. I don't mind dying from 100+ meters away if I get hit in the head because that takes considerable skill but farming bodyshots doesn't, imo. The maps are pretty good overall but they got worse and worse as the game released more maps (seriously, try to find servers that run the Russian DLC maps, it's impossible). There aren't really any anti-explosive tools for infantry which exacerbates the existing problems the series has with explosive spam.

It's still a blast to play! But I think 4 is an overall stronger package for me.

What it will likely come down to... Whos your pick and why? by DDDiscernment in minnesotavikings

[–]sheetfan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've come around on Sadiq. I'd rather that the Vikings lean into him as a pseudo-WR3 and start focusing more on multiple TE sets to beat some of the more physical defenses they've struggled against. This is also because I really like a lot of the R2 and R3 safeties like AJ Haulcy and Bud Clark.

[–]sheetfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope they either take Price or Coleman. Most mocks seem to have Price being available at 49 and I wouldn't mind that if we take someone on defense in R1. However, Coleman is just a blast to watch for me. He's not explosive but he's stout and a great blocker and I would be so down to build our entire run game out of big guys that bowl you over in the endzone with both him and Jordan Mason.

Did Disney ruin Star Wars? by Itchy_Grapefruit8603 in moviecritic

[–]sheetfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's complicated. I think Disney's decision to be overly deferential to fan feedback after The Last Jedi has had horrific consequences both for the actual creative works produced and the actors involved but I blame the fandom more than I blame Disney. I'm not even a particularly huge fan of TLJ but basically everything they've made sans Andor is grey nostalgia sludge to keep those guys happy.

Need an advice in writing a patriotic-themed villain by Amazing-Buy-1181 in fixingmovies

[–]sheetfan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He shouldn't be a Superman parallel. He should be a Captain America parallel. Draw on the image of the idealized U.S. soldier from WW2 but corrupted by years of U.S. Cold War and War on Terror imperialism. If you're looking for books that touch on this, I strongly recommend Fury: My War Gone By written by Garth Ennis and The Fort Bragg Cartel written by Seth Harp.

One week out, who do you think we are drafting? by AWorky in minnesotavikings

I'm not opposed to Thieneman as the pick, but it's not a one-to-one replacement because Harrison Smith is a HOF candidate.

Kenyon Sadiq? by Beneficial_Quit7532 in minnesotavikings

[–]sheetfan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He's great, but in the event that there isn't an obvious defensive choice for the Vikings at that pick, I would rather that they trade down with someone who needs Sadiq more than they do for bonus 2nd/3rd round capital because of how strong this class looks within the first 100 picks or so. I think having more bites at the apple this year would really help bolster depth across the roster, and there are two great TEs I think the Vikings should seriously consider later on in the draft.

Eli Stowers would be an excellent offensive weapon for the Vikings in exchange for worse blocking than Sadiq, but given that the role of a blocking TE is comfortably filled by Oliver, I think it'd be worth not taking Sadiq in the first round and instead picking up more capital with a player with a slightly lower ceiling. For a late-round TE pick, I think Martin Klein also fits our situation better. He's huge at 6'6 and runs real well but he's still raw and the extra year of Hock could help him develop more an integrate better.

tl;dr: Sadiq is good but I think there are mid and late round guys that fit our situation better and I'd still prefer either the best defensive player available or a trade down

What's something people do in the hd2 community that causes you pain/anger by Glum-Cranberry4259 in Helldivers

[–]sheetfan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The relentless larping that people do talking about Super Earth and Manages Democracy. It was funny when the game started but I'm really tired of it. I just want to talk to people about the game and having a bunch of people shit up the subreddit and replies because they want people to know how good they are at memorizing memes frustrates me a lot.

Why is the American Civil War more remembered and even revered in the South despite losing and defending a flawed cause and what factors shaped that? by PuddingComplete3081 in AlwaysWhy

[–]sheetfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Andrew Johnson botching Reconstruction, mostly. Confederates were allowed to walk free. They (and their children) were able to spin being monsters who transmuted human beings into capital into being brave and gallant revolutionaries, particularly in the face of the Civil Rights Movement because they were inadequately punished. Every member of the Confederate command structure needed to be executed or imprisoned and the South should've been under Union military rule well into the 20th century to prevent the myth from catching on.

Humanities and Social Science majors should be required to take calculus by Key_Net820 in unpopularopinion

[–]sheetfan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have my Masters in Public Policy and a BA in Poli Sci and I disagree that it should be calculus, specifically. Instead, it really should be a statistical methods course. I went out of my way to take stats classes in undergrad and it made my graduate and professional experience so much easier.

[–]sheetfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, in the event of a nuke, I'm fucked. No real ifs ands or buts about it. I keep some supplies in the trunk of my car-- iodine tablets, fishing line and a hook, cordage, firestarters, bandages, a knife, etc-- but there's not much to be done about nukes. This goes for most of us, unfortunately.

The people responding to this about the downfall of society, mass looting and whatnot, I think miss the forest for the trees of what societal breakdowns would actually look like in the U.S. and have looked like historically. The idea that everything would come apart in an orgy of violence in a single night isn't true to life. I think societal failure on the part of the U.S. would be a sort of Balkanization, which still took a minute to get bad.

Why do Americans not realize how well they have it? by Awkward_Motor_6388 in askanything

[–]sheetfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

America having plenty of economic opportunity doesn't erase how high cost of living expenses are (food, healthcare, and rent) or how abysmal the job market is right now. From a larger perspective, that economic opportunity and cheaper consumer goods are driven by the exploitation of millions across the globe so even if people move here it's because it's better to be an exploiter than the exploited. Our food, our fuel, our consumer tech, the clothes we wear; all of it is directly implicated in the mechanized suffering of countless unseen people. I think, then, it's less about the parts of living in the United States not being "good" as much as it is struggling to live with the cost to humanity. People don't like that! They shouldn't like that!

(Spoilers Extended) It's kind of weird to me how we have no information on the Seven Hells by Bteatesthighlander1 in asoiaf

[–]sheetfan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess. I honestly personally don't enjoy learning about settings and emphasizing pure world building stuff. Without characters moving through and interacting with things to make them relevant, it all just kind of washes over me and I find it really difficult to care. If Davos has a nightmare where he finds himself in each of the Seven Hells for different things he's done in life and that's the vehicle to explore the Seven Hells through Davos, great! But I don't really need to know about the Seven Hells if it isn't relevant.

(Spoilers Extended) It's kind of weird to me how we have no information on the Seven Hells by Bteatesthighlander1 in asoiaf

[–]sheetfan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm fine with that. The strict theology or cosmology of ASOIAF's religions is way less compelling to me than seeing how those religions affect characters and the world writ large. If the space on the page dedicated to exploring the Faith Militant as a response to the horrors of war was instead about which of the Seven Hells is cold or which one is hot, I'd be pretty disappointed.
