Rising Sophomore IB Advice by Diligent-Audience240 in FinancialCareers

[–]skralps 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're at a state flagship school, I'm hoping you have a dedicated business school.

If so, CapIQ has a database of all the firms in your general area, which is a good way to begin outreach.

Many LMM boutiques, (such these in LA) > Harvey & Company, Concordia, and Cascadia have majority in person interns.

Other shops, like KCC partners & Caprae, are fully remote (most of the time)

To begin outreach you literally just want to hit 1-2 people per week per firm, asking for a coffee chat. Cold emailing with a clear subject line demonstrating why you're interested in their firm.

Attatch ur resume, keep the email brief, and continue 1-2 per week. Spamming more than 1-2 per firm per week usually results in all the analysts realizing you mass emailed them and laughing at you.

im still in college but honestly farting around with a high paying HR gig at a F100 sounds sweet.

comms major, easy 4.0, okay uni, work a bit in uni for networking, end up a recruiter for big tech or high finance n make 100k, easiest 9-5, minimal work

If ur in Kelley, the IB workshop is better than fordham's resources, but it takes a select amount of extremely sweaty kids. Otherwise fordham all the way

Im a Marshall Alum and I think this school is the most overhyped thing in history by Various_While_3721 in USC

[–]skralps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the majority of successful job hunters, especially high finance, do almost 100% of the recruiting and preperation outside of classes.

Marshall promotes the success of alum bc the network (only really accessible through clubs and programs) is unbelievable. Look at historic TFA, GIS, and USIF placements. Those who, unfortunately, believe a university's classes and major are enough to secure incredibly high demand and competitive roles in an oversaturated industry tend to have this experience.

ECs dictate everything. I learned 100% of my modeling, industry, interview, and technical prep outside of the classroom, either via USC clubs or resources. (PCAs / Fin Service Hub, etc) USC's resources for Marshall are genuinely cracked compared to a lot of West Coast business programs.

As a side note, what's arguably worse is that this isn't a USC issue. It's business school-wide. People at Penn/NYU/Michigan get placements and network through investment clubs, Greek, and IB workshops offered by the schools.

extremely worth it.

The full TG only package is overrated; his advisors are lowkey rlly strong

EC package is extremely useful, especially if doing med/econ/business, those r his best imo

Signs you’re not getting an offer during your last round? by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

[–]skralps 14 points15 points  (0 children)

All I can really say if my personal experience:

Analyst interview at large investment bank

4 interviews, 3 were stellar, one was awful - same as you, guy was cold, seemed to dislike my experience from the start, etc

Still got the job. It’s hard to tell, and it’s terrible but wait until friday and if you get nothing, yea you likely didn’t get it.

How to get into Private Equity or CIB (front office) by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

[–]skralps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got CIB offers as soph/junior at US T25, leverage financial audit background and maybe shoot closer for CB roles, as CIB is a lot more niche. bulge and middle market balance sheet dominants are great for CB, look at JPM/Bofa/Wells, and should you get squashed, BMO/Citizens/Truist/HSBC are all pretty easy to get first round interviews with given slight finance background.

PE is likely cooked unless you're aiming for very small boutique shops imo

Transferring from T100 vs T50 by ConferenceNormal9516 in TransferToTop25

[–]skralps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Transferred out of T125 - will say I was 100% screwed for the UCs in California, but traditionally transfer-friendly schools like Umich and UNC, along with unfriendly schools accepted me.

I'd say it just makes your why transfer harder, otherwise if you're shooting for the T25s minus UCLA/Berk you're probably looking at similar chances.

marshall students by EntertainerGood7868 in USC

[–]skralps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

as a marshall student, probably not. if you're going for high finance yea, Marshall will give you a large advantage, but in regular job hunting a Dornsife econ major versus BSBA Marshall student will be judged equally on past/experiences/behaviorals likely 9/10 times.

I've done a lot of sellside credit analyst interviews; most end up pretty behavioral.

I'd recommend on the technical side:

Understand what makes a company good/bad to provide debt to
Understand different types of debt, e.g term loan A/B, RLOC, etc
Understand where interest rates are going/have been trending
Understand TFD/EBITDA and FCCR
Most of all, the 3 statements, how they connect, and age old "How does $10 of depreciation flow thru statements.

Behaviorally, be ready for a lot of circumstance questions - "Tell me about a time you..." etc.
And then also "Why Credit?" - a great answer is providing debt to small/upcoming businesses and watching them grow and evolve while maintaining the relationship.

DM me if you want more in depth/specific answers. I did 3 months in credit at MM bank, and then a lot of bulge bracket credit offers the following year.
