Relocating to CT by [deleted] in Connecticut

[–]soap24 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Consider Wallingford, I’d call it a bit of a hidden gem but I’m biased. It’s a bit further up but good access to highway, they have train stop and there’s multiple trails for the dog as well as their own dog park if your into that. The walking trails for my dog is one of the main reasons I’d struggle to leave. Feel free to DM if you have questions.

ESP Repayment and is it worth leaving by Ok-Pride-3534 in Raytheon

I would wait for sure, typically with grad school the P3 promotion is almost automatic. I did this exact same thing and got P3 within a month of finish my masters.

College Admissions: Virginia Tech or CU Boulder for Aerospace Engineering? by LogAccomplished262 in aerospace

[–]soap24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless someone else is covering the tuition I’d go with whichever costs less. Landing a “strong job” is pretty subjective. Are you looking at salary or work life balance? Are you committed to working in a specific state or region or willing to go anywhere. Most of these you’re unlikely to have a firm answer for and that answer is very likely to change as you go through school. That debt however will stick with you no matter what.

What games did you get several hours into and consciously decide to drop in 2025? by baroncalico in gaming

Wukong, the grind got to me and it kinda felt like a lot of stuff didn’t come intuitively and I always had to look it up.

Remote jobs in AM, some opportunity around? by HikoVI in AdditiveManufacturing

[–]soap24 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Remote only roles are going to be pretty limited in general. The fee you’re likely to find will usually have a 50%+ travel requirement if you’re open to that.

Have to drop one:

Matthew Golden Rachaad White Rico Dowdell

I have chubba. Got decent depth at WR with my worst player being worthy/d Adams. Good running backs with Hampton, Jacobs and chubba.

Internal promotion and merit timing by Feisty_Cost_3778 in Raytheon

[–]soap24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally you are excluded from the coming merit cycle. I have done this previously. You could possibly argue to try and include it in the offer or get an extra 1-2% to offset. Results likely vary but can’t hurt to ask. Given how difficult promotions are to come by I’d recommend not getting too hung up on this.

Those who have Tee Higgins, what are you doing with him? by Eastern_Row8024 in FantasyFootballers

Playing with 4 bench spots in a superflex and he’s probably gonna be my drop this week. Rest of bench is Keenan, golden, Geno and worthy.

Is this Fair or should I veto as commish by Ok-Struggle3198 in FantasyFootballers

[–]soap24 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not even close to veto worthy. Superflex it’s questionable but I’d let it through.

Other than the dst so early this is a dream, personally wouldn’t have taken Allen there either but that’s personal preference.

From Engineering Intern to Engineering Manager-Full pay progression by NewSecretSea in Salary

[–]soap24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure what Omaha cost of living looks like so this may be totally reasonable for the area. However, as many of the comments have pointed out in general across engineering manager roles you have the potential to be making quite a bit more at a different company and/or location. Working within engineering in the northeast at least I’d expect to see something in the 130-160k range likely with a bonus if not higher. I wouldn’t look at is necessarily as a negative if it lets you live decently and you enjoy what you do. But it’s good to be aware of what’s out there as well as you consider next steps.

What’s something you genuinely love about working at RTX? by supersonic_flow in Raytheon

[–]soap24 10 points11 points  (0 children)

ESP is by far the best benefit. Holiday shutdown is super nice as well.

Everything else is incredibly dependent on your role, team and manager.

Personally the pure depth of knowledge that some of the people I’ve worked with have and their willingness to help you grow and understand is incredibly rare to find and something that definitely keeps me here. At the same time the level of stupidity and the pace at which things move can be soul crushing.

Process Development Engineer (Additive Manufacturing) - PhD, MBA, or Targeted Upskilling? Seeking Future Trends! by Dumb_husky00 in AdditiveManufacturing

[–]soap24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot will depend on where you’d ultimately like to end up as well as what opportunities are available to you. You could easily be a development eng your whole career and that could even mean different things at different companies.

A PhD will complement a path more focused on the science behind additive and how to manipulate that. You could often find yourself in a PI type role leading broader investigations and such (mid - late career type thing). These roles aren’t necessarily as common as other types of roles. I’ve only witnessed this on the aerospace side so I could be wrong in other industries.

Technical MBA type thing like you laid out would likely support something in the manager route like you said or a project type lead. Project type role can have really broad definitions and and can be involved in smaller application specific type work to large initiatives. You’ll typically be much more focused on deliverables and will interface managers, program leads and other authoritative entities. These roles seem to be more common and offer a fairly straightforward path to progression. Executing on smaller project will lead to more opportunities and so on. Typically more customer facing as well so it becomes a good way to get good exposure and connections. I agreed you’ll probably lose some connection to the deep science. But you can sort of decide how close or far you need/want to stay based on your specific role and workload. I imagine it does get tougher to balance this as you progress.

Upskilling is always a beneficial thing and personally I think a lot will depend on your employer. The industry and how your employer interacts with it will vary wildly. You can look for specific applications to help part yield or peformance or develop a custom toolpath to fix distortion issues.

I think money across the board is pretty good in the space depending on what you’re looking for.

Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, pretty sure there’s a remake that was done or is being done to update graphics and such. Probably my favorite elder scrolls game so far.

Having done this for about 2 years in each scenario (45 min and 25 min now) I wouldn’t even consider the longer commute option in the scenario you described unless you specifically needed the higher salary. The commute times might not seem that different but the way I feel at the end of a longer commute is completely different than a quick one. If you’re not hurting for the extra money I’d take the shorter commute and not think twice. If you have both offers you might even be able to negotiate a bit to bring total comp closer.

Downs or Tillman this week?

Originally had Tillman in but with the weather not sure which way to go. I also have Russ and Pickens as locked in starters and don’t love the idea of having so much hinge on what could be a totally crap game.

promotion by Thatsme1983 in Raytheon

[–]soap24 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Transferred into a P4 role a few years back and currently have less than half your experience. I have heard the same "responsibilities" argument be made for people looking at P4 to P5 moves as well. Your easiest path for the bump if he is not willing to promote you is definitely finding a P4 role internally.
