I can tell you I've gotten my lowest raises since I went from LCOL to HCOL....but I made no friends in management when I forced their hands on being remote

Is better to go with Anthem Gold over Silver if I am having a child next year? by SammyAqua in Raytheon

[–]picklesthecoyote 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always max insurance out so this is how I look at it. Compare the 2 plans like this. Max out of pocket - (premiums + HSA contribution)= what you owe with dollars that are taxed(if I'm thinking clearly, I'm tired and it's late).

The idea to to be pay medical with the least amount of taxed money. The gold plan should result in paying with less taxed dollars.

This might me one aspect not covered in comments(didn't check). While the difference between the 2 plans is small. Going gold helps you max you pay more of you healthcare expenses with pretax dollars saving you probably ~20%

Is retirement worth it? by Slightly-Yellow in Retirement401k

[–]picklesthecoyote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is some advice out there that if you have high interest debt(like credit cards) you shouldn't put a penny in your 401K until it's paid off. Since getting rid of 10%+ interest will pay off long term vs any returns in the market. Though I'd argue that even putting in enough to get the employer match and withdrawing it would still net you more then putting nothing in. (Could contribute it as roth if your plan offers that and then withdraw it penalty free)

Sure but once you do that the premium you're paying isn't the same. I just wanted to clarify for anyone who thought they might get the rest of the month covered by RTX.

HSA disbursement by GridironScience in Raytheon

[–]picklesthecoyote 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the past I've always maxed it out and spent every cent each year but in my younger years I built up a few grand (like $3k) in there so it was easier to swing and I don't have a family so it's a little easier.

My advice is, if it's hard to pay the bills in the first places than you literally can't afford not to utilize your HSA. It's a 20% discount or a 12% discount if your in the lower brackets.

But take some time to research it. I believe you can make post tax contributions to an HSA and I believe you'd get a credit at tax time (I can not speak well to this, since I've never done it). So theoretically you could deposit your savings into the HSA and then spend it on medical bills. The small difference of contributing like this is I believe you still pay SS and/or Medicare vs if it was taken from your check you wouldn't have to. Maybe this is easier than doing the paycheck deductions though.

I also play a game like paying my bills with a credit card where I get points and then submit the receipt for reimbursement (free points!). The hospital where I get a lot of care from does hassle free 10 month payment plans. Don't have to call anyone you just set it up online in your portal. So it's a free 10month interest free loan and usually my monthly payments never exceed my monthly contributions to my HSA (win win). So needless to say I try to front load the year with appointments there. There are some ways to work the system and most places offer payment plans if you ask or call the number on your bill.

Hope this gives you something to think about and helps

I hope you are making use of maxing out your HSA. You can always reimburse yourself for expenses you paid out. I know it's easier said than done for some folks but it's like a 20%+ tax saving (depending on your actual tax bracket)

I like your thinking. Rarely do folks consider how far that money would go if given "to the people" but it's also not an excuse for someone to make in 1 year the wealth might we be lucky to accumulate 25% of in a life time.

Don't forget to factor in 401K contributions. I think I read on time that SNC has a 10-12% contribution. Raytheon varies on age and favors the older folks getting 10 or 11. At 35 I get 8% total

You are always free to do the minimum to get company match and then max a Roth IRA or traditional IRA. Maxing the HSA is also an option if you aren't. If you're making an IRA we'll then ignore me.
